Back in mid-June I responded to a member at the BST Forum and we arranged a swap of some coins, with me sending him some and his return mailing based on how he liked the coins. He answered me in 5 PM's between July 3rd and July 23rd that the package had never arrived. I waited for the 30 day USPS requirement before I submitted the lost mail inquiry.
Today I checked the tracking number because I was going to send off the form to the member and the PO said the package had arrived and been signed for by the member at 11:58 A.M. on June 28th!!!! I've sent him a PM requesting some type of an explanation. I don't hope for much, if anything. I explained that I would post here, contact the PCGS administrator and the USPS to resolve things.
Has anyone else ever had a problem like this? How did you resolve it? I plan on waiting a short period before I divulge his identity.

Of course, the PO does make mistakes so there might be a slight chance that he isn't a thief. How was it shipped (registered, delivery confirmation, insured) and can you get a copy of the signature form the PO?

the package was sent insured for $100. anything sent insured at $100 or more automatically requires a signature for delivery confirmation, at least that's what the PO told me. before i post his identity i'd like to give him a chance to reply to todays PM and i plan on trying to get his phone number for a personal call.
part of my hesitation in filing the lost mail claim after PM'ing with him was a gut feeling that the package had arrived and i saw little sense in sending him the form to fill out. so i waited. i guess the PO won't confirm/deny delivery until after the 30 day period, but when i spoke with them on the phone today they seemed a bit puzzled that i was inquiring. they gave me the name and the location along with the time it was signed for so i have little doubt that he received it.
what actually pisses me off is that he already had the package when he contacted me to say it hadn't arrived yet. now that is some balls!!!!

during my PM's with the gentleman he had indicated that he was in his 70's and the woman on the answering machine was, by the voice, in her 40's-50's. i left a message with my name and phone number. hopefully they will return the call. if not, i'll try again.

Are you sure he or someone with his family signed for it? If it went to a street address, it could have gone to the house next door or who knows where. If it's his P.O. Box, then only he or a trusted relative should have access.

not sure about that. the PO said it was signed by ______, giving his first initial and last name. i just did a thread search and checked his profile which indicates he "last visited" August 29th.

Its too late now that you've gone public but you should have just sent the claim form to him and have him sign it. The possibility does exist that someone else signed for it and he never received it. If thats the case all is well. However, once he signs the form swearing that he never received the package and if he really did the USPS will be all over him. No need for you to get involved. You have the PM's to clear yourself of any participation in the fraud. Just shoul have let him hang himself.

Sadly, it happens. Not to me yet (knock on wood). However, I sent a check to a forum member for a gold coin a while ago and haven't seen hide nor hair of him or my coin for quite some time now... it's probably an overreaction, but I'm gettin' antsy...
Hope your situation works out (mine too, although in my case I am probably overreacting. I hope.)
That's a darn shame. I hope you are made whole. I have had nothing but sterling experiences in transactions with board members, including the shipment of coins before my check even arrived! I'm sure you know the huge majority of regular posters around here can be trusted, it is a shame somone is sullying our trust ...

Just a side note.
Those blue and white insurance slips from the post office do require a signature but if you need a copy of that signature it may take between 30 and 90 days for the post office to find and send it. So it's not very helpful if you run up against a chargeback. Credit card processors usually require proof of a signature within seven days or you're out of luck.

Perhaps you're right but it certainly sounds like Al has been more than patient.
Heck, it appears the guy, using his regular forum handle has visited here today according to Al.
Why can't the guy just drop Al a note to try to resolve this......that'd be much better than silence from his end.

while i was out at the local shop the member sent me a PM. he said that he received my earlier PM and phone message and claimed he has no recollection of signing for the package. i PM'ed the tracking number so he can check with the PO himself, hopefully that will assure him that he did in fact sign for it.
i believe that he wants to make things right and it is probably an oversight on his part-----i'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on that. he'll most likely check that tomorrow and be in touch.

I think this is the guy you and discussed recently - I had never been able to work out a reasonable deal with the guy after a fistful of pm's.
He built quite a cover for himself it appears.

no disrespect to any poster intended, but you guys can forget about the Postal Service paying any attention to this. I had a serious "theft of mail" and forgery complaint with the Postal Service several years ago. They would not do a thing, saying and I quote "this kind of stuff really gets a free pass, we couldn't possibly follow up every one of these"
The Postal Inspector investigated the case, identified the party and then informed me he would not be turning it over for prosecution. I followed up with th Federal Prosecutor who said this was small potatoes.
The incident stemmed from someone filling out a change of address form and signing my name for a Post Office Box at the US Post Office. They took out a box at Mail Boxes USA to have the mail forwarded there. They used a forged driver license as ID to take out the new box.
Nothing was ever done, although the party did spend five years in jail on other charges, more serious federal charges.
And thats a good way to get them off here. Let's others of us honest collectors know what kind of person they are

I still am waiting for a reply from another board member who says he returned an item to me ( this was while I was overseas ) and demanded a refund from my wife. We never received the item in the mail, and am still waiting to get a copy of the insurance form from this person. My wife paid him the just to resolve things, but I want to know what happened to the coins. Emails, phone calls and PMs havent worked yet

Anyone who is so slow in responding should have his/her name in lights so that others can at least use an oz of prevention.
I would feel terrible if I had the same experience with this person and could have known aboout anbother related incident. At least I would know to watch out.

Even if the guy FINALLY made it right, it's been only after numerous PM's on your part and finally an implied threat of going to the postal service or elsewhere for legal help.
You obviously made it clear to the guy that there was a problem and it seems he did precious little to get it resolved.
I've had hundreds of transactions with forum members and never had a problem. I hate to think that a problem from this guy would taint the rest of the board.
I say post his name. He can come on here and defend himself if he wants. I guarantee if I screwed up like this I'd be on here making an apology.

I received the agreed upon coins today and when I started this thread, that in itself was all i was hoping for and it would have satisfied me. However............
..............during the course of the thread I received approximately six unsolicited PM's in which the sender asked me if it was so-and-so. Each of them was correct and related a personal experience in which they were involved with the member under circumstances similar to mine. That has caused a change of heart on my part, so I'll reveal his identity.
The member's forum name is Louie and he responds to PM's with the name Luskie, his name is Louis Mello and he lives in Mooresville, NC. While i should recant my accusation of him being a thief, I would still suggest that the membership should consider not trading with him, or at least do so on different terms armed with the knowledge of this thread. There seems to be a pattern of deception at worst and absentmindedness at best when it comes to his forum dealings.
I hope this will be helpful towards another member incurring any loss or delay in the future.

I tried like the devil to make a deal, but everything I was seeking to acquire was worth both the Moon AND the stars, while everything I had to offer was barely worth cab fare. I can go to just about any dealer and get that deal - without shipping & handling!

i still cannot escape the feeling we drove a poor little collector outta the business for no reason at all. Im the type that can spot those thiefs a mile away...louie doesnt fit the shoes...which is only reason I contacted keets and asked...not to start trouble or label louie a theif
I think we act owe him an apology, or I do. maybe it was incoorect for me to tell keets he was old and sometimes confused things by mistake...either way we m-f'd him in public n now hes gone...most say good...I say what about the little ones minds he was feeding (suppodedly our expense) how will this make them feel...
