    Tipum,
    ever get your cards?
  • Murcerfan,

Great Post! I love the regional stuff. I finished my 54 Dan Dee set (much to your chagrin). I have a partial set of the 54 Red Hearts. I love that scan you posted of the 54 Johnston Cookies. I have thought about starting this set....

What are your thoughts on the Kahn's Weiners? I just started the 64 set and made a couple purchases this week. 1964 was the first year for color and a second year Rose card makes it attractive to me!

Lux -- Excellent Kid Gleason! And a rookie no less. And to think, this card was issues 30 some years before he managed the Black Sox. Awesome card...

Finally found a scan of this card... For the PCL fans on the board.

  • Bobs,

Thanks for the kind words ... I did not know that was a Gleason rookie card but DUh 1888 I guess it would have to be....Actually the reason I bought it was because he was the manager of the Black Sox... I am working on a set with all 8 participants and some of the key outdside characters( Gleason,Commisky,DuBuc,Attell, Burns,Gedeon)... The cards have to be form their playing days... I am still looking for Risberg,McMullin and Felsch... But after seeing the Gleason I also bought this one too:

    Luxurywines-
Those are wonderful cards. You don't have to tell us how much you paid (though I must say my jealous half is just dying to know), but I was wondering if you knew how those were issued? Did they come inserted in Cigarette packs?
  • MRC,

They were a set of 18 punchouts (9 of the St Louis Cardinals and 9 of the Detroit Tigers) that were meant to be put in scrap books... The original theory was that they were supposed to have been issued by Scrapps Tobacco CO., but this was discredited as the company never existed... Usually they have heavy staining on the back as these 2 do.... But if you have an extra $10,000 MAstronet has an auction for a complete set of CArdinals in Near Mint condition:

Wow - thanks for dredging this up; this thread occurred several months before I joined and I never knew it existed (although I did make an anonymous guest appearance in one of the first posts image). 6 pages of posts! I can't wait to get home tonight and read them all.

I was searching for another post and came across this thread- IMO one of the best threads on this board ever. Thought some of the newer members might enjoy seeing it, and some of the old timers reviewing it.
I sure wish Scumbi/PSatan was still around.

  • Anthony,

I just scanned through the thread. I barely remember it. Thanks for bringing it back! I agree, it's a great thread. It's pretty cool that most of the scans are still viewable as well. You don't often see that on a 2+ year old thread!

I would suggest some of you newer members read through it if you have time. Very interesting (even the 2nd time around).

Wow, what a classic thread! I'm glad it was refreshed since, as a relative newcomer to the board (though not regional sets), it's great to find others who share the appreciation I have for the types of cards most others (whether in the hobby or not) view as insignificant.

It's rare to find someone who has heard of the sets I collect (mainly regional Dodger food sets from the Koufax era) let alone who can understand the level of excitement I felt when I finally got a Johnny Klippstein Bell Brand card (YESSS!) image

Kirk- Now that you're top dog on '60 and '61 Morrell's you have to start giving that guy a run for his money on the '59's!

Anthony, Mark has too big of a lead for me to try to catch him on the '59 M's. (just like you and your '58 Bells!) I know well enough to avoid the temptation of trying to build certain sets from scratch. But hey, LMK if you ever want to get rid of your #2 '58 set. I think i could offer a nice home to your leftovers!

The scan of the 1958 Bell Brand Campanella reminded me of the PSA 8 Koufax that sold for over $4000 this summer.

I also like the Kahn's, particularly the Roses. I had my eye on a '64 and '65 (both PSA 8) that were on ebay several months back. Didn't pull the trigger. Shoulda woulda coulda.

    Kirk-
I've seen Mark's '59 Morrell's and they are really incredible- they look a bit different than the '60 and '61's. The thing about the '59's is that I don't ever seem to see them in any condition- the other 2 years are around at least. I got enough of Mark's leftovers to complete the set, but they certainly aren't worth grading.
As far as the 2nd set of '58 Bells goes, I'm waiting on a few upgrades that will put it to 3rd all time, then figuring out how best to sell it. It'll probably be a month or 2.
