Those are great looking cards. I love to see these pics. And those Wilson Franks are really nice. You must be jumping for joy.

Heh . . . One case where a "10" is no big deal.
  • murcerfanmurcerfan Posts: 2,329 ✭✭
well........ that may be true, but it's still my mostest favorite 10.
as long as we're yapping about this card, i should mention that the photo was borrowed from the 1952 Berk-Ross set. Maybe it should be a .9 in light of that fact.
  • Murcerfan,

Okay, Mr. Pretty Cards. Don't make me break out scans of my Faberge Eggs. You're pushing. Also, any job openings in whatever empire you've built to fund these purchases. I can send a resume.

Feeling really bad about my cards,

    Satan

  • murcerfanmurcerfan Posts: 2,329 ✭✭
For "heaven's sake" Satan ... please don't break your eggs.
Put them all in one basket like me maybe, but don't bust 'em .................dude.
I started this thread because of all the complaining that nothing informative or fresh was ever posted here. I had hoped to see lots of posts and pics about the part of the hobby I enjoy most.

Could we get lucky and have those Florida boys post us the Felin Franks??
would someone come forward and offer their knowledge on the many issues I don't know about?

Would Varga, The Bobs and Antnee share with the class ??(well OK, yes they did)

But alas........All I've done is make you feel bad about your cards and be accused of showing off.

    Murcerfan,

Please don't do it! The signatures are getting too long as it is. Eventually, you'll have to scroll through sigs to search for the actual posts here. image

BTW, why hasn't anyone included Caramels in their "Care Bear Campaign"? image I miss the prescence of BOTN, crazysc's sarcasm, and Davalillo's ... massive collection (sorry, that's all I could come up with there), but Caramels' wit and eloquence was always something to look forward to every day. image

  • You just wait. Once I figure out how to take a digital picture, I'm going to put up cards that are half as good as yours. You won't believe what I've got sitting in undergraded holders at PSA and GAI. You might be king, but people will soon know me as the daft fourth son of the King that spends his time making the world's largest string ball.

I'll have something up soon. Cancel your weekend plans and hang close.

Don't start buying Obaks until I am finished!

PSA should consider what SGC is doing on their registry. The Way I Collect Registry allows type collectors to display their cards. Very interesting idea. Jrinck actually floated a similar idea before SGC's option was available... As Marc mentioned, Leon has an incredible type collection and had many tough cards displayed at Nationals.

What you folks don't realize is that we have a veritable encyclopedia of baseball history in "theBobs".

Any stats, oddball facts, or historical info that you could ever need and can't find, email Brian. He is my secret source and when he comes up with the info, I look smart! which is a pretty damn hard thing to do.

Meeting Leon was one of the many highlights of the National this year.
He pulled a D-359 Williams Baking in SGC 5.5, seemingly out of thin air, and we struck a deal (very very cool stuff) His table was awesome and puts my little collection to shame.
His enthusiasm and knowledge of 19th century rarities was evident.

I appologize to you PSA hardcores for the many SGC pics, rest assured I use both services,
but often chose the SGC holder for the more obscure sets.

Murcerfan -- Don't forget that Yankee great Roger Peckinpaugh was on an Obak. I completely agree about Leon. His cards are amazing. And he was a great "tour guide" as well.

Zardoz, don't give away all of your secrets. I have already been accused of being a ZAG graderimage

From time to time, I think about selling off a big chunk and plunging into the 19th century.
I always stare at those gems Mastro puts out, the ones right up in the front section.
Those opening bids seem real reasonable, but then all those kooks from network 54 get cranked up and bid the things into the thousand$$ .

Perhaps that's the beauty of the '50 golden age regionals, you can find one, buy it somewhat inexpensively and ask questions later,...... (inexpensive in relative terms) .

4 base hits, kalamazoo's, N172 Cabinets, Gypsy Queens, etc... I don't know much, except they appeal to me.

    On another tangent,
I hear that Caramel and E cards are about the hottest thing in the hobby lately.

    BRING BACK CARAMELS!

  • Murcerfan- Thats a great card of Dusty Rhodes. But thats not the Polo Grounds behind him, thats Crosley Field which is even better as there just arent too many great cards that show Crosley Field.

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this thread (yes, even Satan). Its been pure entertainment.
  • Being the most knoledgeable person on this or any other planet within the 867 known universes, Murcerfan is correct and would be well advised to sell everything he owns, cards, cars, house, and clothes and buy buy buy. There are many cardboard boxes in which you could live and have a collection worthy of the Smithsonian.

Don't forget, SCD always presents the finest classic cards from the most reliable and trusted dealers in the industry.

Let's get back to the topic.
I believe this is a Hank Aaron Rookie Card.
I also believe that is the SCD empty employee lounge in the background, but clearly I have more cards and liqour than any tangible knowledge, so I might just be wrong.

Thanks for posting the scan, zardoz. The 1935 "Red-X" PCL set is one of my all-time favorites!
  • Murcerfan

Why these are essentially the first real stand up cards with a die cut figure. The backs are bilingual, English and French.

I had originally requested that they do them in English/Mandarin, but they felt that there weren't enough Chinese in Manitoba to make the enterprise worthwhile. This set was only issued for American Leaguers, I believe that the National Leaguers will be issued next year. Be sure to read SCD for all the latest updates on this set!

thanks for sharing. I knew you had it in you ! even if you still think it possible Lake to Lake somehow stapled their cards to glass bottles.
I suspect the printer might have been "mandarin challenged".
Good point that the NL never got printed, good choices for cards that never were perhaps.

Some of those '34-6 Batter-up collectors are gonna be pissed that these '37 OPC actually got issued first, not to mention the freaks holding E125's
  • Was Crosley Field the place where the outfield actually sloped up?

  • Oh. It worked okay. Just got out of cold shower. No need for Viagra anymore. Now, let's recap. I want to buy your card. You don't really want to sell it. I told you I like to be taken advantage of. You have sweated me for days on end. You have won. Now, what is it going to take to do the deal? Do you have any wants? I have a nice deckle edge Jim Fregosi? Do you want money? Name a price. Ask for some cards you want. Just, please, don't keep tickling me. You've worn the battle through attrition. Let me know and it'll be done.

I've actually got 2 1/2 sets. One of my favorites, half the set are hall of famers, Hodges probably will be one day. 2 short prints, 2 semi short prints, stains, etc. Lots of challenges for a 10 card set, and Campy's last card. If any one has any for sale or trade I"m always interested.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • Curmudgeon, I'm still here waiting for some kind of offer on the Hires Test Mays. It's been like fourteen straight days. I have a 1949 Vis Ed Bob Feller that I'll toss in with whatever. I think there's one other Feller and one Boudreau out there like this. I'll give you nearly half a 1963 Fleer set with all the cards graded by PSA/GAI. PSA/GAI 7s include Mays, Koufax, Yaz and Clemente. You want a 3.5 GAI Johnston Cookie 1954 Hank Aaron? Got that. Will trade along with others. How about a 1921 Exhibit Ruth is Vg-Ex cond? You need a high grade Mays, a GAI 5 1956 Mantle or a rookie Sadaharu Oh? Send me a dollar number if you want.

    Your card or your soul,

    Satan
  • If this message board existed 40 years ago, you would be reading this:

"What happened to the days of collecting a nice set of Bowman or Topps cards? Why do I now "need" to add all of these cards to my sets: Bowman PCL, Mother's Cookies, Red Hearts, Wilson Franks, Bell Brand, Signal Oil, Morrell Meats, Dandees, Red Man Tobacco, Berk Ross, Drakes, Royal Deserts, Tip Top Bread, Stahl Meyers, Glendales, Bazooka, Hire's Test, Berk Ross, Johnston Cookies, etc.? I miss the days when there was only one card of my favorite player."

40 years from now you will be reading this:

"Boy, instead of wasting money on refractors, random inserts, GU crap, etc., I wish I had collected Bowman PCL, Mother's Cookies, Red Hearts, Wilson Franks, Bell Brand, Signal Oil, Morrell Meats, Dandees, Red Man Tobacco, Berk Ross, Drakes, Royal Deserts, Tip Top Bread, Stahl Meyers, Glendales, Bazooka, Hire's Test, Berk Ross, Johnston Cookies, etc. to my sets? I miss the days when there were only 100 cards of my favorite player produced each year. All of my overproduced cards are now worthless."

Thanks to everyone for sharing their truly rare gems - I'm sorry that I don't have much to add but I do enjoy looking at the scans. It's a shame that a similar thread to this one, 40 years from now, will not even be a remote possiblility (unless posted by murcerfan's grandchildren image)

Jeb, in all actuallity, good modern cards are far more limited than vintage cards in general. It's the high grade vintage that is rare. There are more modern collector's than vintage colllector's also. If there were as many vintage collector's as modern collector's, then pop 20 cards would be impossible to find. What causes vintage to retain it's value is because there are only so many vintage sets to collect. People will spend years on the same set. For modern collector's though, they concentrate on what is the next new product so it causes nobody to collect the other 27,000 different sets and subsets that were made in the last 10 years.
  • Sorry to have tempted you Satan, but I reallly don't think I can sell that card. It's probably one of the three rarest cards I own. It would take a pretty high cash offer to make me cave. I collect only nm or higher on post-wwII cards (unless they are just too scarce to find that way-like many in this thread), and have the Fleers in 7 or higher (except Mays). I would be interested in ex or better of this issue, for which the graders seem to cut no slack:
