ANACS saved my butt at the Balt. show!!

Hi guys,

I have to post this message because they saved me big bucks and I appreciate it. ANACS had their graders at the show and reveiwed coins free of charge. Well I bought a 1917 Lib. Stand. quarter in MS65+, full head from a dealer. I thought the coin was a true beauty and bought it. Well I examined it for 12+ hours and still thought it was the nicest quarter in that year that I had seen.. On Sunday I took it to ANACS for a free exam and the grader told me it was " vigorously cleaned." I still can't believe I could not detect it with a 16x loupe. Sure enough when I took it back to the dealer he admitted it was cleaned. Thank you ANACS. Why don't we get this kind of service with PCGS? For $16 a coin in economy service you would think we could at least get a sub. grader to give an opinion at the big shows. Oh well....just one of my many stories from the Balt. show. More to come.

    Better question yet.......

what kind of dealer would knowingly sell you that coin as a problem free piece?

I have run across stuff at the show that I've wanted and asked the dealer if I can have anacs give a quick opinion before I commit. I've never had one refuse yet.

Not so fast on downing the dealer.

    1) It was a sight seen coin

    2) the dealer didn't BS when he was asked about the cleaning

What did the dealer really do that was wrong? He offered a coin to the public and let the public take the coin to be seen somewhere else didn't he.

Because so many collectors cannot see cleaning, I feel it should be the obligation of a dealer to tell you that a coin has been cleaned, not wait for you to ask. ANACS is pretty cool that way giving free opinions. Not every collector knows all he/she would like to know and having an expert second opinion is good.

I had ANACS give a free evaluation on a few cents for me a couple of years ago. They were dates where the coins were right on the boarder and showed a decent price jump. I didnt want bias to get the best of me, so I took them to a show that they were attending (that I was going to go to anyway.) The guy that graded them for me was really polite and informative. It left a good impression on me.

Well, he sure did about the grade, if the coin was purchased as a 65+. Most coins that are "vigorously cleaned" don't grade that high.

No offense but I do not understand how what that dealer did was justified?
He KNEW the coin was cleaned and did NOT make that FACT known!
At the very least that is deceptive but fraudulent also comes to mind.

I am surprised though that he did make good on it the following day.

If selling a cleaned coin is a crime then there will be a lot of dealers who will have to label nearly
every coin in their case as "cleaned." Then again, is ANACS infallible? Is PCGS or NGC. Just because they say one thing one time doesn't make it so.

I guess I am just spoiled by my local HONEST dealer that would not knowingly sell a cleaned coin without noting it. he marks problems RIGHT on the 2by2's.

I think the real crime here is that the seller knew the coin was cleaned, yet priced it at a level as if the coin was not cleaned. That suggests intent...

ANACS has saved me before as well. I knew a 1901 morgan prooflike was to good to be true, but on examination is was a difficult read (the ACG slab was burning a hole in my eyes as well, and the feeling of hypocrosy just touching the slab was too much for me). One of the ANACS guys, whose name escapes me, studied it and concluded the grade was too high, and in fact was not even mint state, and that the coin had been cleaned. Taking it back to the dealer, I also got a wee confession.

Ok, to put an end to the story..... I bought the coin labeled as BU. I thought the coin was MS65 or so, full head. The dealer had a helper at the point when I bought it. He was at lunch, so I was told. It was in a flip with various "chicken-scratch" on the insert. I tried to dicker on the price but he/she would not budge w/o the owner there. I walked away but returned and paid full price because I thought it was worthy of the price and had to get but to my hotel to check out or face paying for another 1/2 day. I paid for it and walked away. The next day, after hours of analyzing it with my 16x loupe, I took it to the ANACS booth. At that point they told us it was "vigorously" cleaned. I was clueless that it was cleaned. We took it back to the dealer who said it was marked cleaned, using some form of code, only he knew I guess. He blamed it on his helper. But he did return our money. So you be the judge at this point. At least he "fessed up" but only he knew the true condition of the coin, of couse when confonted. Right or wrong, I admit it left a bad taste in my mouth. I expected more from the biggest dealers in the USA at the ANA convention.
