this is AWESOME!!!! Carlos, you da man! Best of luck to you and I know you are going to be 100% healthy real soon! My prayers are with you and my paypal has been sent. Looking forward to meeting you at next years national.
Hope it helps a little Carlos... I paypaled you my donation...
FYI, Carlos was the one who introduced me to the registry and was also one of the two people who helped sell me on the notion that PSA graded cards were the way to go... that was 3 or 4 years ago!
I don't know you personally, but the love and support shown here on this board to you is inspiring. A donation to your paypal account has been made to you this morning.
Just send you a Paypal donation. Keep on fighting -- and keep your set!
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
Carlos, I'm not sure I have ever done business with you, but from all of your contributions to the board in the past I feel like I know you. Get well soon. A pay pal from me is on the way as well. Jared
Hello Carlos... First let me start by saying I'm sorry to hear about what's going on. I've been through similar issues about 10 years ago when I was 20 and I am certainly aware of the difficulties and hardships that follow this. I was only able to go through everything because of my fiancee (wife now) and a loving family that kept me positive when I really didn't want to be. Money can't buy that...
Although I don't know you and have never spoken to you, I have made a modest donation to help simply because I understand and wish you the best... It's hard enough to go through all of that without having to deal with the financial aspect as well. Nobody needs that. Further, I have added this link to my home page in the hopes others can help if possible. I hope this is okay with you. I have also contacted a few hobby publications in the hopes they may be able to help by some means possible. Finally, if there is any person here who would like to make a donation of cards that is not a seller on ebay, I will gladly list the cards for them as I have a perfect rating of over 400 and would love to offer any further help if possible...
Carlos, Speaking from one 1972 Topps baseball "Fab Five" member to another – keep the set as long as you can. It will be a source of great joy for years to come. I know what it is like to have the dogs barking at the door. I am currently experiencing some small money problems of my own so you are not alone. As you can see from this thread, you are blessed to have some many people who enjoy your friendship and care about you and your incredible collections. I have sent out a $25 Paypal to you this morning. I wish it could be more. Good luck in the future and God bless you and your family. Neil
I've also just made an attempt to contact Topps in the hopes that they may consider either making a straight donation or consider making a card donation available for auction. I was only able to get a voicemail, so who knows where that may go. If anyone has any connections or a better idea in this matter, LMK or try to move forward with it yourself if possible.
My best to you, Carlos. I do hope that you are able to keep your set too. The outpouring from this board has touched me deeply as I know it has touched you also. May there be many more collecting days for you, and thanks for being unfraid enough to share your life with us! My family and I have sent a small gift via paypal. Tom Harbin, 1961 Topps BB
Man you are an inspiration to us all I'm only still a kid (18 y/o) but i have seen what Cancer to do to a family and having lost an aunt to Cancer i know how it feels and i Will put up a few auctions where all the $$$ will be donated to you and if you wouldn't mind sending me an Email just lettin me know about your story i Can see what i can do about gettin an Auto'ed Dany Heatley jersey (I'm a friend of the family) and throwin it up on Ebay where all the procedes will be donted straight to you just keep ya head up and remember that family and close friends can get you through the tough times you will be in my thought and prayers.

Just sold the Shannon off line. Got a whopping 250.00 for it from a generous board member who wants remain silent. Thanks to all who emailed. I will email you soon.but expect the payment via check ofr paypal. Hang in there the good Lord will see you thru this.
Great Gesture Dave. That was a real generous donation from you and the buyer. Looks like Carlos is well on his way to keeping that set in his collection.
If you haven't emailed a link to this thread to five new people today...please take a second and do so. It's not that hard to do. You can simply email 5 people off the set regstry for one that you are working on. We need about 400-800 people to step up.
i sent $25, thats about all i can afford cause im in college, but i listed 2 large rookie card lots (please see the "auction for carlos-modern" thread). half or more of the proceeds will go directly to him. plus, i am in a local band and i am trying to get together a benefit concert......might bring in a few hundred bucks.
I would like to extend my thanks and sincere gratitude for the overwhelming gesture that all of you have shown my family and me.
I must say that I have been humbled to the greatest extent of the word. As a person who has seen many successes in my life, I almost felt invincible. I played college basketball at a small NAIA school in Cleveland where I was only the second player in school history to score 1000 points and grab over 1000 rebounds, and was chosen for the All-American tour team twice, accepting the invitation after my senior season. The basketball tour started in North Dakota and we travel throughout the USA, and then flew to Aruba, to play in some World Peace Tour games that were held in that country. While in Aruba, the locals dubbed me Senor Carlos, because my game mirrored that of Charles Barkley (Sir Charles). Pro scouts were on hand for many of our games and I was asked to play in Venezuela immediately following the tour. I accepted and worked out with the “Coca-Cola” sponsored team for a couple of months. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out and I was released. Although I never thought that I could make it to the NBA, CBA, or USBL, I had hoped to play professionally but I guess it was never meant to be. I played Pro-Am ball when I returned to Cleveland for a couple of years, but that was about it.
After I finished College, I moved to Chicago, and then moved back home six years ago. I found my high school sweet heart, and we quickly married and started a family. I finally settled down and got back into card collecting. I joined PSA and started sending in some 1974, 1971, 1968, and 1965 Topps baseball cards to be graded, not just the stars, but the commons as well. Dealers, at the time, thought I was crazy. Actually so did I!!! Soon thereafter the registry was born, and I looked like a genius. )
Everything was rolling along smoothly, until the beginning of this year. In late December of 2002 I was told that I have Cancer. The crazy thing was that it was totally unexpected and I had no idea. I had went to the doctor for an unrelated issue and lo and behold Cancer. My local doctor referred me to the Cleveland Clinic where a specialist confirmed his findings. In early January of this year, three weeks after I was diagnosed, my father passed away in his sleep of a heart attack. My two children (Ages 4 & 5) found him in his bed the next morning. To say the least this was just too much to digest.
When my chemotherapy began, it was a nightmare. I missed three months of work and that’s when things started to spiral down financially. We depleted our savings and took out loans to get us by until I got back to work. That is why I wanted to sell my 1972 Topps Football set. Medical bills coupled with loan payments have set us back.
Right now, I feel a lot better then I did two months ago. The sad part is that I am out of my haze that the chemo put me under and I am coherent enough to see the hole that we are in.
All of that brings me to this… Your donations have been incredible and I think I will be able to keep the set. I have some 1972 Football doubles that I was using for trades that I am going to put on eBay. I have cleaned out my closet and will peddle those items as well. But the good news is that I WILL NOT SELL MY SET. Someone on this thread suggested that I pull my set out and look at it. Glad I did. As I was looking through my doubles I noticed that I forgot to update two cards from a PSA 7 to a PSA 8.
Once things get back to normal, I hope to search for more upgrades to OUR set.
Finally, and most importantly, my wife is keeping track of the total amount that we have received and when I get back on my feet again, I will make monthly donations to:
Mycosis Fungoides Foundation PO Box 374 Birmingham, MI 48102-0374
In the name of PSA SET REGISTRY BOARD MEMBERS, until your donation amount has been reached, and then I will continue to make those donations until that amount has been doubled. So not only will you be helping one person that you know, but hopefully thousands that you may not know.

But, as to your wish to eventually donating the amount you receive to the Mycosis Fungoides Foundation, please don't make any hasty decisions. You have a wife and a 4 and a 5 year old. They need to come first. They're putting you first right now, so don't commit to a course of action (however noble it might be) that might take away from their future - be it house, college, wedding, whatever.
I think that I speak for everyone on the board when I say "We don't expect anything in return for this". When you're back on your feet, if you want to set up the donation - thats great. Just don't mortgage your future or your families because you feel indebted to the Registry members. We're doing this as much for ourselves as for you.
Be well my friend and see you at the National in 2004!!!

Wow. Anyone else get goose bumps reading this thread?? The support I'm seeing is truly amazing and I feel lucky to be a part of this Message Board. Thank You everyone!!
Carlos,
Being one of the few members in the medical profession, I can't say that I know what your going through, but I feel that I have a good idea. I am an MRI technologist at Indiana University Hospital and I deal with cancer patients every day. (In fact, Lance Armstrong was treated at this very hospital and we all know what he did) I am with many of these patients step by step and I see their progress. I have to say that these patients are the most strong willed people I have ever seen.
Just today, I scanned a patient with stomach cancer. A spot was seen on his liver during a CT scan and I was asked to do an MRI. The patient began crying to us after his scan. His doctor said that if the MRI was ok for his liver that he would have to have his stomach removed and have a longer, but more difficult life. If the MRI showed metastisis to his liver, he would not have surgery and would be given just 4 months to live. He was telling us that all he wanted to do was to live 5 or 6 more years just so he could watch his new grandson play ball. How heartwarming is that? Well, when the scan was over, we were able give him good news. The spot on his liver was nothing but a benign hemangioma. It made my day knowing that he would be able to watch his grandson in a few years. Some times its hard to keep my emotions under wrapps.
Stories like that make me go home everyday and give my son a big hug. It really makes me realize how lucky I am to be healthy.
Carlos, could you please post a picture of yourself so everyone can put your face with your name. I think everyone would like to see one.
Please accept my paypal donation on behalf of me and my family. You will be in our thoughts and prayers....and please dont sell your set!
Carlos I do not think that we have met, but, cards have been very very good to me this year. Parting with some Glendales at incredible prices helped. I will give some to someone who is more in need than myself. Best of luck.
Davemri - Wow, your story of today reminded me of when we were getting a sonagram on our yet to be born youngest girl. I was sitting there watching the screen like a little kid as she pointed out the organs and bones and this and that. I say, wow you have a fun or cool job...something like that. She looked at me and said it's fun as long as everything is normal. That shut my perky *ss up. I have thought about that many times. I don't think I could work in the medical field. GREAT for those that do!
Carlos - this is one of the most amazing things I've witnessed haven't checked board in a couple of days ,just spent quite a while reading this post I teared up when you spoke about your wife crying. Keep the set and don't give up ! My small donation will be in the mail . God Bless you and your family and the people on these boards . This is the greatest country in the world and I'm proud to be a part of it.
Carlos, I have not checked the boards since getting back from the National and I am blown away by this post. Paypal donation is on the way.You were the trailblazer for 1974 topps baseball and always a pleasure to deal with.Wishing you and your family the best. Brian
I checked out your football set on the registry and it is amazing! All I had to do was read the little paragraph that you wrote about the set and I can tell you are a true collector. Remember -- the real collectors never sell anything, so keep your set and please accept a little help from my paypal account.
20 years from now you'll be so glad you kept all your cards. I wish you the best.

I do not think that we have met, but, cards have been very very good to me this year. Parting with some Glendales at incredible prices helped. I will give some to someone who is more in need than myself. Best of luck.

I checked out your football set on the registry and it is
amazing! All I had to do was read the little paragraph that
you wrote about the set and I can tell you are a true collector.
Remember -- the real collectors never sell anything, so keep your
set and please accept a little help from my paypal account.
20 years from now you'll be so glad you kept all your cards.
I wish you the best.
take care,
Chuck
