Walkers -- MS 66 long short set, and the best I could find and afford for the rest. Though I would love to have all the 21's and 19's in at least 65, I just don't think a 100k would cover them as well.
They are undercollected, are unique in their tinyness, and when collected with a discerning eye can be quite fetching. The complete set can be had for 100000. Here is mine for my type set. I need two more. A type two and a type one. The type one will be an 1851-O in MS 65.
1856 MS65: 1857, 1858 SL, 1858 LL in MS66: the 1858/7 in MS64.
Great series and would look great at those levels.
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose.
I've been thinking about putting together an 1873 proof set (minus the gold) for some time. I could really put together a very nice one with all coins PR65 or better for about $100,000. It would be like owning a small type set all in one proof set.
I'd put together a "finest known" set of the twelve 1861-63 "God our Trust" pattern half dollars. It would be a great challenge and there's some good history to the coins. Additionally, as our nation's first "godly" coins, they might become more valuable when the "In God We Trust" motto is (controversially but inevitably) removed from our nation's coinage.

except for a handfull of key dates, a complete set of barber halves in m.s. 64 would be possible, unlike the o1 S quarter, there are no killer dates in the barber half series that are unaffordable thru the grade of 64. to stay under 100,000 there are probabley half a dozen dates like the 01 S, 97 S etc... that would have to be in 62 or 63 to stay under 100,000. Other than the 2 cent series, i can't think of a more affordable set to complete in high grade mint state. I'm not counting flying eagle cents because i don't consider three years a series and i wouldn't want a circ. date 1856.
The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.
I guess I would apply the funds toward an MS set of TD's in 62 (keys) to 64 (common), and I would also include the varieties and chopped specimens as funds and opportunity allow.
Oh, wait, I need to come up with another idea!
I think I would pursue an Early Half Dime (or Early Dime) set, by L-M (or JR) variety, in original ChVF to ChAU.
Complete type set. Grades? The best I could afford. Nicer circs for the pre-1800 stuff, UNC and Proof for the rest, with a preference for cameo proofs where possible.
I would go with either a complete type set (including the gold) or a complete 20th century set (again including the gold). I doubt the complete type set could be completed for 100K or less (could it be completed for less than 100K if you excluded the 18th century coins?) I would buy the best grade I could afford without going over the 100K limit.
I'd go for the last coin I need for my Red Book set of early half dime set, the 1802. I've got the others, and a $100 grand would buy one that would not look too bad when it was set next to the other coins.
Unfortunately $100 grand would not buy the set if I had to start from scratch.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I have often thought of such a fantasy.

Ah I agree with Captain Ron, walkers do make for a gorgeous complete set.
This is to easy.Mine would be Lincolns of course. The very best money could buy.
Registry 1909-1958 Proof Lincolns
10 coins pretty much completes the series in circ. and proof.
toughie is the 1876-cc which greysheets at 30k in au.
including that one, rounding out a collection of gems and good quality proofs should come in at right around 100k.
neato coins, second shortest lived denomination, no one will be hounding you to sell them, what's not to like?
now, give me half a million and i'll go after the shortest lived denomination.

Standing liberty quarters MS66 with 80%+ heads and above average strike
1794 XF (12K), 1795 AU (11K), 1796 F (18K), 1797 F (18K), 1801 AU (8K), 1802 AU (8K), 1803 AU (3K), 1805 AU (3K), 1806 MS (8K), 1807 MS (8K).
That leaves 3k for an 1805/4 in XF45.

Second choice Walkers MS-63 or better.
<< <i>type set? I didn't know you could say "type set"! change my answer to type set. >>
He only specified that it had to be a complete set, Baley- didn't say anything about type versus date sets.
Type Sets rule supreme!
