Has anything gotten cheaper in the last couple of years?

It looks like there's kind of a bull market in coins right now. Proof Buffalo nickels have more than doubled in price over the last couple of years according to the auction archives. Modern coins are also selling for very high prices.

Some classic coins are less expensive relative to moderns now than they were a few years back even if they're selling for the same prices.

Can you think of anything that's actually gone down in price recently? If so, how do you explain it?

Dan

Gasoline has come off its high, but it still cost too much.

I think some of the 80s proof sets might have come down... my pocket change has probably devalued because of inflation image

Yes, typical older Proof sets from the early 1960s onward have generally been in the duldrums. The trouble is the mintages are usually a few million (2 to 4 million) sets, and once the first blush image is over, the collectors who want these coins have got them and demand begins to sag. The only exceptions are rare varieties like the no mint mark pieces and the D-Cam coins that can be graded in high number holders.

Some of the IHC prices have dropped as more have been certified, mainly late dates, as judged by the pink sheet. Same for some of the early proofs.

type date seated and barber mint state dimes and quarters.

as an example; 2 years ago grey sheet for type barber quarters was 1000 and recently is between 750 to 800 dollars. 2 years ago the most common 37 buffalo nickle in proof 67 was trading for about the same price as mint state 65 barber quarters. There is no way with equal quality for the grade a type date proof buffalo nickle is worth twice as much as a properly graded mint state 65 barber quarter.

1 dealer admitted to me the proof buffalos have done well the last few years because there are enough of them to be heavily promoted by some dealers.

Higher Grade Mercs in the 40's are cheaper than before. More and more of them are being made from the Ka-Zillions that were minted. Some are holding up but not many. I believe they will continue to drop also.

Silver MS and Proof type in the 1840-1916 range is typically weaker but this is mainly for average to low end graded type coins. The price on the lower 65 quality pieces keeps on dropping. In general they are 64's and are heading towards PQ64 money. As long as the services keep on pumping out swilly 65's and 66's it will probably continue. Honestly graded 65's and 66's just aren't very available anymore and they have not really dropped in price......only in perception.

  • Graded Silver Eagles have really dropped. One year ago, a complete set MS69 1986-2002 was $1,695 (DLRC).
Now you would be lucky to get $900 for 1986-2003. I don't know why, except that I have them.

Therefore, and it is a proven fact, anything I buy drops like a lead baloon.image

Just bought a 1989 Toyota Camry for $700 and am now cleaning it up. It has 180,000 miles, tuned it up mechanically (really minor stuff like air filter and plug wires) and bought it for my 17 year old daughter who needed a car. Now I understand she was so ticked at that old car that she took her savings and bought a 1997 Toyota Celica for $4000.

Maybe, I will now keep the car for myself. Hate the color (white) but loved the price!!

Oh sorry, this was about coins? Hmmm, have to think about that one.

When I was poor in the early 1990's I bought a 1977 brown chevy camaro for $1,000. Wouldn't pass inspection until I filled all the rust holes with bondo. Drove the car for 4 years without putting money into it. The car was an ugly brown and was total trash. Hated driving it but you do what you got to do. Sold it for $700 to a father and son who planned on fixing it up.

oops- made the same mistake as Oreville. This is about coins.
Lots of foreign coins have gone down. You can pick up really cool looking German coins for half of what they used to go for.

Lots of moderns have gone way down. The state quarters in MS-67 and 68 are really cheap compared to what they used to be. I thought I was going to get rich on those babies but they dropped before I got started. Certified Proof69dcam Proof silver eagles used to trade for big premiums but they have come down to earth. Also modern commems in PCGS MS and PRF 69 have come way down. Too many people certifying too many coins.

Generic US gold coins have gone down.

I think anything that is truly scarce and collectible has gone up and stuff that is generic or common has gone down.

<< <i>Generic US gold coins have gone down. >>

I bought my common date (1908 NM) Gaudens (PCGS MS63) almost 2 years ago for $410 and they are still hovering around $460 or so on ebay (coming out of the $500s that they were in a few months ago, but still increased in value).

I have been waiting for a nice decrease in common date gold, so I can pick up a quarter or half eagle at a nice price.

  • Rare date gold. Maybe has not gone down so much but trades at same price as almost 10-12 years ago. Check out some of the southern gold, like Dahlon ega or charlotte, and you'll little price movement.
