Which recent presidents are most likely to appear on coins in the future?

How about Jimmy Carter? He won a Nobel prize, after all.

Nixon? Well, he was a war time president.

Reagan was certainly respected.

Clinton’s head would look good on a coin.

Johnson, Ford, and the two Bushes... probably not, in my opinion.

What do you think?

    >>>Cater, who has been a first rate FORMER President.

You should clarify - "In your opinion", certainly not mine. (Carter) A first class tool of those in the world that hate the US, IMO.

Reagan disarmed the USSR, and ended the dcold war so he is tops on my list for a coin.

My vote goes to Reagan. I would also like to see Theodore Roosevelt, at least on a commemorative, although he's not a recent president. image

Oh yeah, that was some kind of great treaty he negotiated with North Korea, right? We will spend the next many years trying to undo the damage done in those negotiations.

I vote for no more past Presidents.

I'd like some more classical-look coins with lots of nice detail. The ASE was a weak attempt to bring back the walking liberty, but is WAY TOO simplistic in design.

I agree a Reagan Commemorative would be great. His ability to end the Cold War with the former USSR is a milestone accomplishment.

I thinkTeddy would be a good choice as well. One of the proud conservation mined republican presidents we have had. BTW- I'll take the North Korean situation over what we had in 1980 when Reagan took over from Carter any day.

I don't think they should put presidents on coins until they've been dead 25 years or more, except on limited run commemorative coins, which would have to wait at least until the person died. It would be nice if circulating coins had an allegorical Liberty figure again but it would be hard for her not to look like somebody, I actually kind of like the Sac. for that reason but also think a circulating statue of liberty coin would be pretty neat, I think they missed their chance in '86 by only issuing a commem but the platinum coins are still popular and I'll bet if they made a circulating SOL dollar that was a convenient size between a nickel and quarter then it would circulate, esp. if they stopped printing dollars.

We already have a Reagan "Medal" with Ron and Nancy on it so I'd suppose that a coin will be minted after his death.

Reagan.I would also like to see some coins with extinct animals or animals on the endangered species list.

Carter on a commemorative. I wish they would take Reagan's name out of Reagan National Airport; so forget about putting him on a coin.

Regardless of the politics, here are the Presidents I think have enough support to be memorialized in coinage in no inaugural order:

    John Adams
    Madison
    Monroe
    Jackson
    Teddy Roosevelt
    Reagan

  • << <i>Clinton’s head would look good on a coin. >>

I don't think the words Clinton and head should be in the same sentence. image

I am all for Reagan replacing Kennedy on the half. Truman would be an interesting choice for the quarter.

I am not in favor of putting extinct animals on coins. Dead presidents are passable, dead animals I never see don't have any appeal to me. Would rather see Miss Liberty or Eagles. Would like to see Independence Hall back on a coin or the White House, Capitol Hill, a few select others.... How about a series with the history of the flag in all its incarnations? Imagine the debate over "Don't Tread On Me" or the Union flag during the Civil War. The very thought of the fight over the 'stars and bars' boggles the mind. I would even like to see a reverse series that covers each of the amendments in the Bill of Rights and the non repealed ones to the constitution. Could be very attractively done and would be educational to many.

    Here's my proposed solution:

Commemorative coins - Past presidents, notable places and events

    Currency - Past GREAT presidents

Circulating coinage - Great American Artistic/Patriotic expression

    HOWZDAT?

    Hopefully, none.

The memorializing of previous US Presidents on our nation's coinage is inappropriate, in my opinion. The founding fathers had it right when they legislated that "an emblem of Liberty" be placed on our coins, not a political figure (or King/Queen, etc).

Not that I necessarily agree with his politics, Reagan, I think, has a lock on an appearance on a coin in the future.

Reagan will be on a coin for sure. I think there is a possibility he may make it BEFORE he dies. Personally I would prefer coins turn to back to allegorical designs.

I like my Arkansas 25c piece with Clinton on it....well, he's on the reverse. I doubt that's Hillary with him.

I can't see any recent presidents making it to a regular issue coin.

    Nixon was a crook.

Ford pardoned him for all crimes, including cheating on his Federal Income Tax, which was an unpardonable sin.

Carter was a well below average president. The only thing that kept him from “failure” was the Camp David accords IMO. Post presidential good deeds can not save his presidential legacy. It is WAY below par.

Ronald Reagan was a very good president overall, but the Democrats despise him. He’ll never get on a current business strike coin, but he might make it on a commemorative coin after his death.

Bush 41 was a slightly better than average president, which hardly qualifies one for an appearance on a business strike or commemorative coin.

Clinton???? Please!!!! Grow up people! The man was a total sleaze. His 11th hour pardons for con men and international fugitives should have TOTALLY ended the debate if the rest of his wrong doing didn't convince you earlier.

Bush 43 is still in office.

Among the more modern presidents, Truman might be best bet. Both Republicans and Democrats have come to admire him, but I doubt that he will make it. Teddy Roosevelt might be the best bet if anyone makes it.

It really is time to move away from dead Presidents. Frankly TR should have been on either a coin or even a replacement for Grant on the $50. Truman should have been on a commem...hasn't happened yet. In 1982, the mint didn't do a special reverse for the Roosevelt dime to commemorate the Roosevelt Centennial. I would favor new designs...there are many things worthy of consideration.

They should bring back the 1/2 Cent, and put Clinton on its obverse and either Marc Rich or Kim Jung Il on its reverse. This should be done only if they use inferior grade copper.

On a serious note, I think they should put dead presidents on coins, to get people more curious / interested in our country's history. How about coin with Millard Fillmore or Franklin Pierce?

Why not honor some presidents who did a good job but are not famous?

Who comes to mind? Many historians rate James K. Polk as a "near great" president. He settled a border dispute between the U.S. and Britain between Oregon and Canada. (Some were calling for 44-40 or fight!) He lowered the tariff, and expanded the U.S. via the Mexican War. That is still controversial, but imagine if Texas had remained an independent country and Mexico had kept California.

Another is Chester Alan Arthur. He was thought to be a total political hack, yet when he came to office after Garfield died, he rose above politics and pushed for civil service reform. Bright’s disease prevented him from running for a term of his own.

William McKinley stood up to the inflationists who wanted to ruin the nation’s monetary system with free silver. Once more death limited his time in office.

I think that TR should replace Jackson on the $20. Jackson on the $20 is abhorrent. He almost tore apart the still new nation with his refusal to obey a supreme court decision. Not to mention the Cherokee trail of tears, which, IMO was genocide. He should be removed ASAP and TR would be a good replacement. However I would rather see a founding father, Madison, deserves recognition. 905 of americans probably don't know what he contributed and this would bring awareness. IMHO of course
  • If the mint ever comes up with a $0.69 coin, they might as well put Clinton on it. Otherwise, I don't have much use for that putz.

    Clackamas,

Jackson was a hard money man who hated paper money. He also opposed the continuation of a national bank. It's ironic that his portrait appears on a piece of the paper money that is issued by the Federal Reserve Bank.

I would like to see some coins with some of our National Monuments on them. How about Mt. Rushmore, Lincoln Memorial, etc. on circulating coins......
