Does this 3-legged Buffalo look right to you?

3-legged Buffalo

The reverse does not look like a genuine 3-legger to me. Anyone else?

Joe.

  • Very blury around the missing leg and I would require a better close up pic before bidding if I were you.

It doesn't look right to me at all. Missing is the trail of raised bumps leading from the bison's belly towards the ground. Also missing is the ragged looking rear leg and neck of the Indian. Stay away!

Can't tell much from the pic, at all. I would agree with Veep, although I don't think the image provided would allow anyone to make a concrete decision on authenticity.

  • Doesn't look right to me. To shiny at missing leg. Almost like it's been polished away. Need better picture.

It doesn't look right, agreed. Too much of the missing leg has been dremeled/polished away. Where's the hoof? Also the die characteristics are off.
It makes sense though, so many altered "1914-D's" are offered on eBay along with hoards of counterfeit Trade dollars, I was wondering when more of these 'three-legged' Buffalos were going to show up.

No, looks like it has been buffed to hide tool marks.

  • I would avoid this seller. Well preserved is not a grade and the coin is low grade anyway. My bet is counterfit...........very little doubt. This
is what happens to folks who buy on ebay. I see one bad deal after another. Wake up out there. Good deals on ebay are so rare as not
to be worth the time to look for.

It is possible to find good coin sellers on ebay. Doing ebay is kind of like doing movies. Go to the movie that has what you know to be good actors and actresses in it and you probably won't be disappointed. Obviously, you can't really know about an ebay seller (well, there is feedback but I've found that to be of limited value) until you actually are a winning bidder and then proceed to complete a transaction. Find a good ebay seller or two, though (they do exist), and then stick with them.

The nickel doesn't look like a genuine 3-legger to me. The images don't lend themselves to the possibility of the prospective buyer making a very useful determination (other than half a**ed) of authenticy. On looking at the sellers half a**ed images, the rear leg doesn't appear to me to have a "moth eaten" appearance. The nickel must have this feature to be a genuine 3-legger.

Looks really questionable. Those back legs are THICK. On a coin like this, you've got to be wary if there is not a close up focusing on the diagnostic features (uneven beard, "peeing" Buff, motheaten rear legs, and slightly smaller bison (EPU is a little further away from Buff's back)).

The picture is too poor to really tell. The hints that I see point toward OK, but I'd never bid based upon that photo. The seems to be rust marks on the Indian's neck. There seems to be rust marks under the buffalo, but notice that I used the word "seems" repeatedly. Probably better to stay away. Certification is a good idea here.

diagnostics on genuine pieces are as follows...

    1. The hoof on the missing leg shows pretty clearly
    2. There are die bumps below the Buffalo's belly, looks like the Buffalo is taking a leak
    3. The rear leg is molted and incomplete looking.
