What are your thoughts about this kind of toning?

1927 10c NGC-65FB (Interesting toning)

I am looking at this very nice 1927 and thinking to myself, God what a nice coin!, and also wishing
that the toning did not intrude upon the portrait. If it was 100% in the fields, then we would have a nice contrast, but this toning is never appealing to me. I have no idea why, simply a function of aesthetics. Its a superb coin, it is likely from a roll, tape, or envelope storage. Who knows, 27 Mercs in this grade are not that scarce, so I will continue to upgrade.

  • If the toning is not as brown in person which I think will be the case I like it. If not I would not really mind maybe not the most beautiful toning but at least its original. If it is really ugly I would dip it and screw the originality but would have a much nicer looking coin.

I actually like the look of that coin. I think the mostly white devices with that almost straight line border with the darker brown/mauve toning is dramatic. It's an odd duck, though. Definitely not for everybody.

  • I'm not a real big fan of. It might be nicer if it didn't have that line of white right down the middle. Definently for some, not for others.

Hey, jd4science doesn't like the thing about that coin that is exactly what I do like.... That can't happen in numismatics? Can it? image

Brian I'm with you on the obverse tone. I like to see Miss Liberty free from tone on her portrait. The reverse of that coin does not bother me at all though. That coin should look 100% better in person than in that auction photo. A trip to NCS with specific instructions as to what you want done would probably turn the coin into a killer toned Merc.

That is some very nice original tab toning! DO NOT SEND TO NCS! If you want a bright shiney one buy a bright shiney one! image mike

    Brian,

I am not a fan of toning, and I don't like the dark tone. Now, with that said, I know others love tone and based on that I wouldn't pass on the coin because of the tone, for I know there is a market for it.

    Good luck!

FINALLY, someone got the right answer! Toning is easily market acceptable. I like the coin, though I prefer mine blast white. image

It's not the prettiest in the world but it's neat looking. I have one that looks almost just like that I bought just because it is strange & different looking.
I assume they got the white band in the center from a March of Dimes donation board.

This toning is too dark for me. I know some people love tab toning and all of that type of stuff, but it's not for me.

I like nicely toned coins, but I don't like it when it's blochy or so dark that the luster is shot.
