Imagine if PCGS and NGC were friendly competitors....

I used to work in the wholesale floral business. When we would run out of carnations, or whatever, we would call our competitors
and get them to spot us some. We did the same for them.

I now am a personal injury lawyer. I talk shop with my competitors all the time. I refer business to them. We help each other out.

I am also a coin dealer. I give coins on memo to my competitors and they do the same for me.

Imagine if NGC and PCGS were friendly competitors.

Here's just a few of the things that could occur....

PCGS could let NGC use PCGS's numbering system...a brilliant idea i suppose of David Hall's and one that NGC could benefit by using and which we all could benefit from having a uniform system of.

PCGS could make their boxes accomodate NGC coins.

PCGS and NGC could share information about who is doctoring coins and what they look like.

They could engage in friendly competitions against other grading services for most accurate or replicable grading.

The could jointly host coins shows and do other things that alone might be cost prohibitive. They could offer insurance together.

They could get together and try to come up with a grading guide that could go even further as an industry standard than PCGS's very excellent grading standards.

I'm not saying each of these is ground breaking, practical or desirable....i'm just brain storming.

Can you think of any others?

They could use NGC's turnaround times and customer service which has been voiced as being lacking...
They could make just one registry set...
They could truly become the best grading service in the world...

They could share information on successful crossovers so that each's population reports would be more accurate (rather than relying on the customers to submit this info).

Wait till David Hall reads this thread.......
Talking about crossovers is what got gmarguli banned.
I need to stay away from you 2 guys.
I'm just a stupid non grading collector. I'm probably banned already for posting in this thread.

In the distant past, PCGS had the lion's share of the market and did everything to make it difficult for NGC and their customers. Now that the two firms are on a more equal basis, some of these suggestions could actually become reality. (Although it is highly unlikely that the two companies' standards will ever merge.)

To the above suggestions, I'll add that if both firms had the same size slabs it would make it easier for someone to develop a line of PCGS/NGC slab albums.

HRH, how about giving some of these ideas a fresh look?

Very interesting, a coalition of the unwilling. I'll cogitate on that.
  • I've always wondered about the prospect of NGC and PCGS working together. As a business owner myself, I farm out stuff to my competitors periodically, and they do the same. I don't know exactly why PCGS and NGC can't get along, but I have the feeling it is more about personalities. After all, NGC was formed after PCGS for reasons unknown to me, by John Albanese, NGC's founder, who was also one of PCGS's founders. A split between Mr. Hall and Mr. Albanese occured somewhere along the line, and I think it probably wasn't amicable. From the way it seems, it probably STILL isn't amicable, even after all of these years. I wouldn't know, this is just conjecture on my part. The possibilities for the two companies working together for various benefits to collecotrs would be a cool thing, if the principals could kiss and make up. image

    To make it less one-sided...

They could use PCGS' holder which has much less bulk...
It would enable two sites to handle the stuff... maybe split up what goes where so it could get filtered based on specialties of graders...

I think a merger would be interesting... most definitely

I think each organization is stronger by being fiercely competitive and protective.

Pepsi and Coke don't share their secrets and I've yet to see Burger King sell Big Macs inside their stores. They seem to prosper just fine. I see NGC and PCGS "getting together" to share info. I also then see prices for the various Services rise because of it.

Ever wonder why each and every gas station within a half mile of each other offer gas at about the same price? Yeah, me too.

-Although I do believe if someone came up with a Slab Container that held ALL the slabs they'de have a winner and money-maker on their hands.
(Shoot- ANACS and SEGS don't even offer boxes!)

No, no, no. Competition between companies is good for the consumer.

Yeah, but even Pepsi and Coke have all the same size bottles and cans. How come PCGS and NGC can't do that?

Most NGC numbers just have a 1 added to the PCGS number.

Very interesting ideas, I'll ruminate while Morganluver cogitates.image

But seriously, NGC was the best thing that ever happened to PCGS. Without NGC there would be no need to crackout PCGS coins to see how they'd do at NGC, to get cracked out of their NGC holders to see how they'd do at PCGS. You get the picture.

It's a great idea in some ways, but it won't happen.

Still if PCGS and NGC were to get in bed with each other, it might not work out well for the consumer. Cartels never work to the advantage of customers, only to the advantage of those who control them. Overall my guess would be that we would see a losening of grading standards.

agree with michael, competition keeps an industry healthy, monopoly ruins it.
