How to accidently make $200 on a coin

Even after paying for the slabbing fee I made $200 on this coin. I bought this raw IHC as mintstate and paid less than 64RB money for it. One day I was looking at it close up and it seemed different to me than my other IHCs. My suspicions grew that it was a proof. I posted it here last summer and of you agreed. So while at FUN I dropped it off at PCGS and sure enough it came back PF64RB. So, instead of a $60 coin its a $260 coin.

The coin was purchased from a well known national dealer through one of his Ebay Sales.

    Mike,

Nice find! The 1907 PR IHC is actually a rather tough date (lowest mintage of all 1880s, 1890s, 1900s proofs, always a good year in proof to grab), you did well. image

Actually Mike, if your scan is any indication of the true color you can double that estimate.

Pat, the coin looks better in person, it has purples, reds no brown. Shylock saw it at FUN. It would probably sell for close to $300.

Edited to add: they were tough on it, it's a high end for a 64

Pushkin, you are correct the 07 is a tough date in proof. Heritage has only auctioned three in that grade. Hard to understand how a proof could sit around so long raw.
  • Unless PCGS got it wrong or it is a label error.

That's a real pretty coin. It's things like this that make you keep going. Buying raw coins is always somewhat of a gamble but when it pays off it makes you feel invincible or almost.

No they got the proof part correct, we figured that much out last summer on the coin forum. image

This thread reminds me of an IHC I found at a local shop one day. I was looking at a low grade ms/61 or 2 copper/nickel issue, in an anacs slab. When I realized the coin was actually a proof, and slabbed as a mint state coin, I quickly asked how much on the coin, and the dealer commented that the coin looked like a proof. I agreed and told him I was going to resubmit the coin. Sure enough, it came back as a proof 61, from anacs, the second time through.
Your coin is MUCH nicer than that one though Mike! image
