Okay, what is NION DYE HAIR?

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
1964 PCI PR70 NION DYE HAIR. I've looked at a zillion 1964 Kennedy proofs (and owned a half zillion), but I've never heard of this. Anybody know what PCI is talking about?

Maybe its a Punk band from the early 80s, PCI had a really bad day, either that or someone there
cannot spell. Its even on the PCI label.

    Brian.
  • AH, they probably didnt know that term.

  • << <i>Anybody know what PCI is talking about? >>

I don't think they even know what they are talking about. You will have to buy it Russ since it is different than all your others.

  • I don't know, but the letters in "NION DYE HAIR" can be rearranged to spell "I DENY A RHINO"

you know, the engraver! Nion Dye!

  • I think it is interesting the guys store name is "cheap slabs" on ebay. I say buy it Russ. You may be the only owner of a pci70 nion dye hair. But I checked the registry set, they don't have a slot for it.

<< <i>AH, they probably didnt know that term. >>

That's also what I thought at first, but the coin isn't the Accented Hair variety.

    Russ, NCNE

  • They can also be rearranged to spell "I, HORNY DIANE", "I HAD IRON YEN", and "YEN IN HAIRDO".

However it CANNOT be rearranged to spell "I have too much time on my hands" image

I'm usually pretty good at figuring out what a typo was supposed to mean, but I got nothin' here. Even the seller's description that refers to "high definition hair" doesn't help. I'm assuming "DYE" was supposed to be DIE. Then what?

Nion=neon? D.H. might still be answering questions maybe he knows or ask the seller.

  • "high defination hair "???
That's almost as bad as my personal grading standard for Buffalos... hint... it's on the reverse and has to do with the size of something.

Even though it is PCI i'm sure they were trying to spell something coin related, just not U.S. mintages.

    could have been

    " in yen i hoard "

    or

    " i dinar honey "

but it was probably actually a misspelling of a Latino tribute to Russ

    " hi any dinero "

gotta love them "gold" slabs, yumm

I really want to know the answer to this. I have another guaranteed-wrong guess, though...

NI ON DYE HAIR = Non-Intense ON DIE HAIR = the non AH variety.

  • Since "nion" isn't actually a real word, I'm guessing that the word is supposed to be "pion" which Webster's defines as:
"A semistable meson produced either in a neutral form with a mass 264 times that of an electron and a mean lifetime of 8.4 × 10-17 seconds or in a positively or negatively charged form with a mass 273 times that of an electron and a mean lifetime of 2.6 × 10-8 seconds."
    It means "shiny hair".

  • Shocker - thanks. I better bid. I already have the quark and boson varieties, and I need the pion variety. What an opportunity!!

    Kranky,

Me too.image I sent an eMail to Humphrey asking him about it, but haven't yet heard back.

Humphrey got back to me and just repeated what it already says in the auction, that it's high definition hair (in other words, a good strike). So, it looks like it's something that PCI decided to make up, kind of like ACG's stupid FEB designation on these.

    Russ, NCNE
  • << that it's high definition hair (in other words, a good strike) >>

Actually, that kind of makes sense...maybe the just missed some letters (and misspelled words) when they typed it...

    "high defiNItION DY(i)E HAIR"

    ahahahahhaah

It looks awful nice - maybe it is the SMS cameo example they made - you have a couple days, maybe you should call PCI (are they still in business?).

It looks like NiON to me - first 2 letters Ni is sometimes abbreviation for Nickel - maybe this is copper clad nickel outer layer?

Nion Dye was the engraver of this die before he was found out to be a spy, so they canned this particular die, supposedly there are only 5-10 coins known.

  • Hey DCRUNT, Why don't you pack sand up your arse?

The question is legitimate. There's a whole lot of folks who consider virtually every "gem" you issue to be worthless spume. When it says "DCRUNT's" forums - you can dictate the content. Until then - GET OVER IT.
  • DanC- You still carving up those '64 proof sets like a Thanksgiving turkey and then complaining when the Ebay seller won't allow you to return them for a refund?

Give us some real contributions about coins or continue to stay away. image
  • DCRUNT,

Your crap is old, tired, lame and never was funny. I never asked for a refund, moron. The issue was the difference between what the set was advertised as, and what it was.

I can't help but notice you hid until you thought I went away either.

You are a troll of the first degree. Your purpose is, was and forever shall be to inflame. You obviously wish to engage in yet another flame-war. Well moron - I don't engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed (*cough*) man, and I use the term loosly.

Your obvious low self-esteem coupled with your secure position as the Viagra poster-child of 2003 lands you firmly where you belong. An idiot with an opinion about everything - and a deep jealousy of Russ and several others on the boards who contribute without taking any crap off of loser like you. Count me in as someone who doesn't take crap from a loser of your caliber.

Why don't you begin by posting some pictures of your coins, or show us your auctions Mr. Expert?
I've been contributing. You, in typical fashion are either trolling or pretending to be "Miss Congeniality."

The "smileys" don't disguise the venomous diatribe you continuously spew here. I have yet to see a missive of any consequence out you. GET OVER IT.
  • Drunk and mis-typing again, DanC? PLEASE don't attempt to flatter yourself with the misconception that I was in any way intimidated by your presense on this Forum. Pick yourself up out of your puke, quit drinking and stumble to bed. Call a substance abuse agency and get some help.

So PCI said "NION DYE HAIR" means "high definition hair"? I have to ask: In what language? I'm more confused now than before. I want to know what NION means!

    Kranky,

That's what the seller says it means. I sent an eMail to PCI and asked. Haven't heard back yet.

Hey, I got a response from PCI. It was:

    << <i>Don't know, can't see it to comment. >>

I guess I should have linked the auction in the first eMail, instead of assuming they'd know the definition of their own designations.

How sad is this? I really wanted to know what this cryptic code meant, now it seems the creators don't even know. Russ, you going to show them a picture, or shake your head and walk away? Still curious....

    Joe,

I responded with a link to the auction.

  • Russ,
Good deal, I'll be watching for an update.
    Joe
P.S. Good luck with your snipe tonight! (I'm gonna go snipe my pillow now)
  • Has anyone noticed that the PCGS price guide lists this variety?
    1964 AccentHair 13 15 17 22 30 40 60 200 850. No MS70 price.
I wonder how well it would cross over. Maybe it really is a true rarity.
    I have icon envy.
  • OK, I've checked out all of the photos that I could find, and I can't see the difference. Here are 2 images. One is certified with "the hair" and the other is not. Can you tell the difference?
    I have icon envy.
  • << Can you tell the difference? >>

See the "wishbone" in the hair of the second picture?

    That's the AH Kennedy.
