Feeback sought on an important numismatic thesis: The difference in numismatic collecting interests

I was thinking about this the other day and thought it would make for an important thesis.
In my twenty two years of collecting, I have noticed a very specific difference in what male and female numismatists pursue.
Since there is such a wide gap between genders in this hobby, I would welcome added feedback.
I know four serious female numismatists as well as two on this forum. This is not enough for an accurate statistical sampling, but here are the preliminary conclusions that I have
made based on gender divisions in collecting patterns.

1.Female numismatists tend to gravitate toward 20th century CAM/DCAM coinage and modern bullion.
2.Female numismatists tend to shy away from Colonials and Early copper.
3.Female numismatist tend to be less concerned with grade, and more concerned with eye appeal.
4.Female numismatist tend to be less concerned with the holder and more concerned with
the actual coin. This may be a difference in brain chemistry and psyche between genders,
as females are less ego driven.
5.Females tend to be less series and set and completion oriented, but rather seeking quality coins, period.

These are only assumptions based on my personal observations and I find them
fascinating.

What are your thoughts?

Brian.

  • I truly have not known enough women numismatists to have anything to say about their collecting habits.

I have known women who collected different things, and I would say they did it the same way as male coin collectors... obsessively.

  • The couple of serious female collectors I know...

    1) Collect coins thematically...animals, boats/ships, etc.
2.) Actively collect foreign as well as U.S. issues
3.) Are serious...they are usually the ANA and state NA rep in my clubs

I have had a concern about this for over 20 years. Why is half of the population not interested in numismatics. I have asked women who attend numismatic events and never have been able to come up with a conclusion. As a professional, I am extremely interested in doubling my client base. Is it possible that it is too minute of a hobby, that the objects are not larger? This is an important question. I hope that it attracts proper attention.image

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

I tend to notice such things and the only thing I've seen is a little more likelyhood
to collect gold. I've known only a few women who collect so this could be "sampling
    bias".

Oh I agree 100% and am not trying to. The sad fact is I don't run into too many women coin collectors...like I don't run into many minority collectors....and I'm speaking from the sole viewpoint of a guy in 3 clubs and what I see of clientele at shops and shows.

Coin collecting...as a BIG generalization...seems to be the domain of later middle-aged and senior white males. I hope that tide changes.....that, or I hope I'm wrong.

Gee, I always knew I had a feminine side! Check out my comments and my "old" silver commemorative type set that is registered on the "other side of the street."

  • I have been collecting coins for years. My wife has shown an interest in my collection, and began collecting Mercury dimes about 3 years ago. I have probably examined 20 times as many coins as she over the years, yet often I will show her coins and she will notice problems that I missed. She has a very good eye, and buys Mercs. with good eye appeal, preferably full bands. She will probably go on to Walkers once she finishes with the Mercs.
