This should be fun-Rank the Grading Services and why you think they should be in that order

danglendanglen Posts: 1,674 ✭✭✭
Here are my choices:

1. PGS (Pushkin Grading Service) because of conservative grading and the rarity of the slab image
1a. NGC Because I think they try harder than PCGS
2. PCGS A marketplace force to be reckoned with.
3. ANACS Gives me an option for my problem coins and I like their free grading opinions at coin shows (although I got burned big time by relying on one about a year ago). image
4. ICG J.P. Martin brings a lot of credibility to the table, but they went commercial on me with their "Signature Series" of States Quarters and Sac Dollars.
5. PCI Used to be a lot better than they are currently, but were never really in the top tier
5a. SEGS Same opinion as for PCI. However, you can cherrypick a lot of the older PCI and SEGS slabs and gets the holdings to cross at the same grade into NGC or PCGS slabs.

I won't rank ACG or NTC because I don't consider them to be legitimate third party grading services. image

Comments

  • 1. PCGS: Never had a problem with the company (so far). All my submissions have came back what I expected.

    2. NGC: I do like thier customer service.

    3. The other services that I have dealt with (ANACS, ICG), I dont have enough experience with them to cast a rating yet.

On the "Fun Factor" I'd rate SEGS on top. I like their descriptive inserts and like the way they'll attribute almost anything. Plus they're the only ones left, as far as I know, that will holder silver rounds and Gallery Mint repros and the such. PCI began to thumb their noses at these types of submissions a few weeks ago.

    Easy:
1.PCGS: The best and the service and consistency shows it.
2.NGC: Just as good as PCGS in my mind. Very consistent
3.ANACS: Reasonably consistent. Good for authenticity and lower grader collector coins.
4.SEGS: Excellent holder, but terrible grading. Horrid service.
5.ICG: Flooded the market with MS/PF 70 garbage. Tainted their reputation forever.
    6.PCI: Excellent holder. Inconsistent grading.
7.ACG: I won't say anything. They speak for themselves. I don't want any libel suits.

  • 1. NGC (NCS); consistency, and their customer service, and No body bags if sent to NCS first.
    2. ANACS; Cost, great for varieties, Circ. type, Grades problem coins, Conservative grading on Morgans, great for DMPL and UDM Morgans.
    3. PCGS; collector acceptance.

1st tier-pcgs, because they create "the standard".
2nd tier - ngc and anacs, because crosses to pcgs are equally rare.
3rd tier - all others, because crosses to pcgs are (near) impossible.
  • 1. PCGS - the best holder, grading and registry around.

    My humble opinion:

    #1 - PCGS
    #2 - PCGS
    #3 - PCGS
    #4 - PCGS
    #5 - PCGS

Are there other companies out there who grade coins?????

    GRANDAM,

So you think PCGS is #5? I never would have rated them that low image

Just my unbiased, strictly limited opinion:

    1. PGS (very conservative grading, unsurpassed customer service, but very limited focus and great sense of humorimage)
    2. PCGS - NGC (more or less equal, but no sense of humor image)
    3. ANACS - no sense of humor image
    4. ICG (they do a fair job with most copper, but that silly little white hat makes it difficult to take them seriously image)
    5. SEGS (poor, poor, SEGS image)
    4. Everybody else except

In their own minds, they are all number one.

Stick with PCGS, NGC, and ANACS--Don't mess with the rest.

They all have advantages and disadvantages.

1.) PCGS (the standard, but in need of much better service)
2.) NGC (good, but too lenient on overall grades and CAMs)
    3.) ANACS (net, varieties, etc.)
4.) Don't waste your time unless it is a cherrypicked steal of a deal.

    PCGS

NGC (if I gotta, NGC is fine but overgraded, I touch nothing but PCGS)

The other firms don't even rate IMHO

    1) PCGS, If I'm going to pay top dollar for a service, it's a no brainer.

    2) ANACS, Better value for some circulated coins that I simply want authenticated.

    3) NGC, I do not submit to NGC, but do not hesitate to purchase coins in their slabs.

    4) All the rest, I still buy coins encapsulated by other services if I like the coin. Wouldn't consider submitting to any of them.

All in all, PCGS is head and shoulders above the rest for a variety of reasons...primarily, market acceptance and about as close to predictability as we are ever going to get with a grading service. I particularly like the fact that they consider a coins minor problems comencerate with a given grade and rarely body bag a lower circulated grade for expected flaws. In short, reasonable!

As for the limited area(seated half dimes) and according to my limited experience,
    #1 NGC
    #2 ANACS
#3 PCGS(very inconsistent and usually overgrade scare dates...it's a big gamble to buy their coins sight unseen)

The order for the grading services (best to worst) changes depending upon what coins are being submitted. However, there are some grading services that just don't make it into the final cut.

I collect 19th & early 20th Century type, except for gold & no Commems.

    1) PCGS re copper and nickel coinage - occasionally NGC gets one right.
    2) Re other 19th Century type, it's a toss up between them IMO.
I've seen more really ugly coins in PCGS holders, but more problem
coins (AT,& IMO major grading mistakes) in NGC holders.

    3) I stay away from the rest.
