What was you wifes/husbands reaction to your 1st $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 coin?

Come on, i know there's a few of us out there that can spend that kind of money on a coin. What was your wife's/husband's reaction? I would like to think mine (when i can afford it) will be loving and understanding, but for some reason, i don't think she will.

What's your story? Trust me, i'll post mine when it happens.

  • My wife lunged at me and threw a hard right hook, which I avoided with a quick duck and spin to my right, but I stumbled slightly and recovered my balance just as she was and swinging a small table lamp at me backhanded, grazing my right temple and knocking the lampshade off, and . . .

OK, the truth is I research a $4500 coin to death and discussed it with my wife thoroughly before buying it from a local dealer.

About 2 months later a much better one appeared on the market, so I tried to sell the first one and actually sold it to Bowers and Merena for $5000 - which is even more unbelievable than the first part of this post when you think about it. But its true. 100% true.

I have the classic wife. When I told her the price, she gave me that lowered chin look with the raised eyes. You guys know that look. When I sold three of them for net 30% profit, her comment was, "why did you sell them now, they could have gone up far more in value!" You can't win either way. image

Cameron, I know you are young but trust me on this one, you don't need to discuss everything with your spouse and you will discover the reasons someday.image

As long as you have enough money for other important things (house, food, clothes), then there is no reason why she should care what you spend you discretionary income on.

Besides, it is an investment - not a hobby. Would she complain if you bought $1,000 worth of stocks or bonds? Then why should she complain about $1,000 worth of coins.

I have got the greatest wife in the world, and she was incredulous that any coin could cost more than a couple dollars. I don't talk about my hobby too much anymore.
  • That's too bad guys. It should be mutual then. Don't complain about all her new shoes or purses she buys. I think you should be able to talk about a hobby you enjoy.

Actually, I was too conservative when starting out and am still kicking myself. There were some great deals then (in retrospect). I took my wife to Eagle Eye once and bought a great 1869 IHC MS65R - she was really shocked at the price but has tolerated my coin "investments" since - "It's important to diversify, honey......"image

kieferscoins, when she can resell her shoes and purses in a few years for a nice profit or at the very least at least close to the purchase price, then they are equatable items.
  • Ok, but you don't know your coins will be more profitable in years to come either. Only time tells, and both the male and female had fun with their new purchase. The topic was on telling your significant other about the new purchase and not why your would make more money.

True, the coin purchases might be worth less in the future. Same with other investments. However, a nice diversified portfolio will help. With shoes and purses the odds are so microscopic that they will be of the same or higher value in the future, that it is basically not an option.

  • I'm single so this doesn't really pertain to me. But my family kinda thinks I'm crazy (especially my last 3 purchases from Alan) atleast they see that it's something i love and they realize it's better than putting the cash in stocks.

When it happens, I will let you know! image But, seriously, she was a little reluctant a few years ago when I bought a PCGS PR-65 1940 proof set (Red cent through Walker half) for $699 and I keep her posted on its value ... it has not done too badly in terms of appreciation!
  • My wife did not care what I spent on coins until last week. I showed her the new grandson's latest 3 cent nickel and for the first time she asked "how much did it cost?" She knows what I have spent on some of the other coins in my collection because she was at the shows with me. I think she was just making sure that the kid was not getting short changed!

well!!!! if you spent that kind of money on that coin..you can just take me out to dinner tonightimage, no problem honeyimage
  • It wasn't a coin but a Mississippi 1902 red seal national bank note. This was at the 1995 Memphis IPMS auction. The note started out low but kept getting higher, I bid and the higher the note got the bigger my wife's eyes got! When the smoke cleared I had spent $4500.00 on one note and she didn't speak to me for a while. When she finally desided to speak, she asked if I had lost my mind and how I expected to come up with that much money, to pay for it with??
A month later at a coin show a dealer pulled her aside and told her if anything ever happened to me he wanted to buy that note, I had won in Memphis. She hasn't said another word about what I spend on a coin or a note.

My wife has no clue how much any of my coins are worth. I will never tell as I know she will go nuts. I do have a copy of my coin collection spreadsheet in the safe so if something happens to me she will know what each is worth......or at least what I paid for each. In our case, my wife's ignorance is bliss.image

I'm not married, which is probably good. It seems like if a married guy buys a coin, then he has to buy something for his wife. The coin ends up costing him twice what it should.

Hey, I wear the pants in my family! I looked her square in the eye, raised my eyebrows, gritted my teeth and lied my tail off. Some time later, after having been busted for leaving some invoices on my desk, I once again put on my "mans" face and told her it was an investment for our daughters future. If this tactic fails me, I'm not averse to curling up in the fetal position and holding my breath til she gives in.

[LOL] My most expensive coin was only 3rd to the mortgage and the car in terms of dollar amount but a man has to have his priorities!

I bought a gorgeous 1955 DDO cent in PCGS MS-65 red which cost me between $17,000 and $19,000 in 1997. I was very pleased with my purchase.

The next year, on the day of my wife's birthday a few hours before taking her out to dinner, I realized I had no money to buy my wife a nice present. Well the rest is history, quick thinking on my part.....she was born in 1955. So I quickly dug it out of the bank vault and tried to con her into thinking it was her 43rd birthday present.

She crossed her eyes when she saw the present and not just from the doubling.

Now, I can't even sell it even if I wanted to. She is making me pay dearly for that horrific act.

We have a young daughter and another on the way, so our priorities need to be balanced. Still, I use the investment diversification tactic and that works well. Also, I show her all these great coins that are out of budget and it mutes the sticker shock. Actually I am just enthusiastic and want to show her the cool stuff, but she seems to understand the importance of high quality. So... just recently, I showed her a nice 1917 SLQ MS66 FH that was close to $2K and well beyond budget. She said "We did really well with your company's stock purchase plan this last 6 months, and it looks like a nice coin - all naked like that image - , so I think you should get it" imageimage Well, I bought something else, but really appreciated it.

Now, when I am ready to pull the trigger on my MS63-64 St. Gaudens High Relief in the future.... we'll see how well that goes over!
