I am considering this one but won't be able to buy anything else for a while if I do get it. What do you guys/gals think of it? Thanks!

Good luck!

Only the severest of problems (rim whacks, deep cuts) would make me turn down such a coin aesthetically, and this seems to be free of those. Become an owner of pieces like this and it's select company.

I'd say at least a G-4 but with outstanding eye appeal for the grade. Very pleasing coin to look at. Thanks for the post.
<< <i>Id say PCGS gave it a good-6. >>

but the scan is great and overall looks like a super nice ag plus to good
but with the great surfaces i would say pcgs graded this coin as a good 4
sincerely michael
for me i guess i could live with this gtrade as it is a really super nice ag coin with really nice good plus surfaces and eye appeal so i think good 4 would be a grade pcgs would put on this one
but overall they priced this coin as a good 4 and i could live with a good 4 price for this coin! and this coin as far as chains go is a nice! grade specimum with exceptional eye appeal in my opinion
sincerely michael
I'm a huge fan of early copper and think it would be terrific for you to add a nice looking Chain cent like this one to your collection.
The advice I would give, however, is to be extremely cautious of grade and price for a PCGS or NGC slabbed specimen. Let me explain:
Early copper is like colonials - a large percentage (though shrinking) of these pieces appear in the major auctions raw as it is perceived by serious collectors that they are more expert than the 3rd party graders who tend to overgrade these pieces. if you check the Q&A board you'll will note that I asked David Hall a question along these lines about colonial grading last week and Mr. Hall responded by saying that he (PCGS) feel that colonials and early copper have been graded too strictly by the 'experts' in those areas historically and that PCGS is now more in line with 'market grading' for early copper.
The implication of this for you is very real. The coin in question which is graded G-6 (if I understood correctly in this string of messages) almost certainly was purchased by someone, likely a dealer, raw as an AG or even a Fair for a price commensurate with those grades. A quick trip trip to PCGS and suddenly this is a G-6 and worth twice or 3 times the money paid.
This is commonplace in the colonial world and something to which I pay particular attention.
It looks like a nice coin, but I thought you ought to be aware of this early copper PCGS grade inflation if you weren't already. I believe a comparable piece could be obtained raw from Stack's or a Bowers auction for far less money.

I've Emailed you privately -
I would agree with others that the coin you are considering is in the AG-3 to Good-4 territory. On the plus side the color looks good and the surfaces are reasonable smooth. On the negative side the date is not complete, I would expect better legends for a Good-6. They should be complete and readable.
The coin you are considering is a Sheldon-3, the "leaning R." It is the most common of the Chain Cent varieties and is rated an R-3.
I know you have been looking for a long time for this coin. I like the fact it is in a slab, I just hope the price is right..
Good luck and keep me informed..
