What is your favorite circulated set that you have/are put together?

nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
I thought this would be an interesting topic. Especially as my thumbs are a little sore from pushing nickels into a whitman folder (@#$ hard sometimes!) for a 1938-1995 set. So what are your favorite sets to put together like this? I have two, actually. A set, 85% complete, of cents from 1909-1975 and a now 80% complete set of nickels from 1938-1995. Almost all of these from both are from circulation. I have other sets, but these have been my favorites.

I don't have it any longer, but back a number of years ago I built a complete set of Lincolns from 1909 through 1980. I had many high grade early coins, early proof coins, and everything from about 1950 on I had the unc and proof versions. I had many hours of fun putting that set together. When that was complete I started on the Indian cents. I had everything except the 1877. My 1909-S was a nice red unc. I sold the sets in 1980.

  • You all may not believe this, but even with all the big high grade stuff I have handled, I yearn to build an XF/AU Half Cent collection. I think those coins are too neat! And way undervalued too. Maybe one day I'll get to do it.

  • When I get my slabbed Peace Dollar set put together, I would like to complete my Whitman `09-`41 Wheat Pennies. It`s going to be good while before I`m able to focus on it but, that`s what I would like to do. I looking to do it in the Good to Very Fine range to match what I already have in it. I also have been thinking of doing a Whitman Franklin set too. I`ll figure it out when I`m done with the Peace Dollars.

My favorite set from circulation is Jefferson Nickels. I have found all except the 1939-D in my change. Still remember finding the 1950 and turning it over and seeing the D. Still look through all of my change.

As for one of my favorite sets, but not actually found (and thus had a face value cost) would be my Large Cents. Out of the 96 coins, I am only missing 5.

  • All my sets are mostly circulated. My favorite is my Buffalo nickel set but I (and my son) had a lot of fun putting circ sets of all the clad coinage together and Jeffersons and Lincoln Memorials too.

I've put together lots of circulated sets over the years but my favorite is the
one I've been working on since 1997- - clad quarters from circulation. I still
don't have all the regular issues in VF or better! I have almost all of the 30
odd varieties except for a couple highly esoteric ones. Some of the ones I've
found are of extremely limited production.

By circ, F to AU, Buff set was my favorite, including the Three Legged. I also have had fun over the years buying bulk lots of Jeffs and punching them into folders. I have 20-plus complete 1938-62 circ Jeff sets (and two UNC sets) and probably a roll circ set just a half roll short on the 39-Ds and 38-S. I also have picked out lots of RPMs and DDs from both bulk Jeff and Buff purchases. It's fun to play with coins you can actually touch instead of plastic slabs!
  • When I was a kid, I collected circulated Lincoln Cents, 1909-1959 in a blue album. 20 moves, and 40 years later I still have it. That's my favorite.

My favorite sets by far are my Buffaloes. So much so that I have 8 complete sets with grades ranging from restored dates to AU (I don't do MS). I also have 2 restored date 18/17-D but no 16 DDO or 37-D 3-legged. I do have various 38-D over S and repunched D's.

BTW, I already have a start on set #9. I will be looking for nice examples at the FUN show and will move any upgraded coins to set #9.

A set of Seated Liberty coins iaw the RedBook varities was really interesting.
My Morgan set is still my favorite set because it changes with my moods. Sometimes it's circulated, sometimes it's DMPL, sometimes it's toned, slabbed & raw.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    dbldie55,

Believe it or not--I received a 1939-D Jefferson from a change machine about 10 years back. I was shocked, and I think it would grade MS63! I still have it and I am thinking of sending it in just for kicks.

  • Peace dollars, Kennedy halves, Washington quarters, buffalo nickels and 2-cent pieces were all fun! Now working on 3CN, and will forever be working on Morgans and Lincolns!

Early half dimes (1792 - 1805). I love 'em. I started my Red Book variety set in 1973 and still have not finishted it because I can't afford the 1802. Each coin costs more than 1,000, and you can rarely buy them even if you have got the money.

As for what I have finished - Lincoln cents - started December 25, 1959 finished the full of 1979. Not my favorite set, but still a classic.

I also put together a set of $2.50 Indian gold pieces. At the time the set was very choice AU, but today I'm afraid that some of the coins would get into low end MS holders.imageimage

Yeah, I got a nice VF 1939D Jefferson from the bank not too long ago. It's funny, I got the albums today and was pushing in the various coins and I got to that 39 and thought it was still a regular 39 and I noticed it was really a 39D, and that was a nice surprise! I also got a 50 and I believe a 50D from the bank, too. And a 38 in a vending machine once!

I'm putting together the worst circulated Morgan Dollar set ever to exist in the history of the world. The coins can't be damaged but just honest wear. I have maybe 35 coins so far and am always looking to downgrade. I want the set to be so bad you just have to laugh when you open the first page of the album. I'm doing it just for fun.

For me, it would have to be a Peace dollar set and V nickel set. It's fun to try to put together both sets while walking the floors of shows. Once the sets are complete, there are always buyers for them.

  • Enjoy putting circulated sets together with no problem coins in old Whitman 11x14 coin boards which I can then frame most recently completed a 2 cent and 3 cent nickel board. But my favorite circulated collection was a 35 cent Whitman folder [1796-1837] of Bust Dimes. Took about 10 years paced many coin shows looking for dimes but it really broke the ice with dealers so I could look at all coins of interest. Only bought one coin at auction [ the 1804 in vf] otherwise set was VG to XF no problem no discolored coins. Sold it earlier this year and I regret it...contrary to what some say regarding circulated sets it was very easy to sell.

My favorite set that I put together was an XF set of Indian heads when I was younger. I remember waiting for the local coin show to come around so that I could find those tough dates. I would save up a couple hundered dollars, which took me forever, just to pick up a couple of those tough 70's date. Then wait another 6 months to get another date. (yes they were even pricey back then.)

By the time I got to high school, i ended up selling off my collection to by car stereo stuff and other junk.

Kind of wish I had them back, not because they have gone up in value, but because it was my first real coin collection.
The thing is, I could easily purchase an xf set today, but it would not be the same.

  • Over the years, I have put together circ sets of Liberty Nickles, Jeffs, FDR's, Merc's, Washingtons, FranklinHalves, Walkers and Peace Dollars.

Am still working on Buffalos, IHCs, and four to go on a set of Lincolns from 1909 to present.

I still have all of these and am working on upgrading and higher grade sets of all.

Three to go on my Morgan Dollars!

  • It would have to be my jeffs - complete and kennedy's - missing 3 or so, and of course I never found a circ 87 or 70. I got some of the jeffs from one of the forum members in the buy, sell, trade section too! The 50% complete cull barber set is pretty fun too...

  • I put together a complete date-set of Lincolns when I was about 8 years old. I still have every single coin from that collection (I'll post a pic sometime), each of which is nice and shiny since we didn't know not to clean them back then.

I also put together an almost complete set of Jeffersons from circulation. It was only missing the 50-D and a few of the war nickels. I've even pulled the 39-D (actually two of them) from circulation.

I put a set of Franklins together entirely from circulation except for the 1949-S that was great fun in the old days when silver ruled...

Great Topic! One of my favorite sets, which I still need a few to complete, would definitely be my fine or better Buffalo Nickel Set.Some of those dates are Quite difficult to find nice problem free 3/4 horn truely fine examples of.It's definitely been educational and fun without killing the pocketbook, and it's a set that I'm quite proud of, assembled in person, mostly from local shows over the years, so every coin is hand selected and constantly upgraded when better pieces turn up.It looks great in that 1 piece Black Capital Plactic Display board too, being a relatively compact set. It's a great thrill to find a Nice Slab from a Dealer that you need for your hi end main Goal Set, but there's just something special about weeding through a dealers 2X2's and finding that elusive nice example of a circulated coin that you know is tough, even if it's only 5 or 6 bucks. It's like being a kid again.image

Type two gold dollars. It may take me a while, but I got the tough one out of the way.

  • I have a bunch of raws sets in Dansco's. I think my two favorites are my Liberty nickels, most of which were at least sold as MS63 or better (with a smattering of proofs. In reality, I think they are all 60 or better. My other favorite is my Morgan silver dollars. Hard to pick a favorite, but those are the two that jump to mind.

  • Currently putting together a Lincoln Memorial set in BROWN XF/AU comdition - no red allowed. This is more difficult than it sounds especially from 1990 forward. It keeepd me intersted in looking at my pocket change for something at least. Sure miss the 1950s when every coin one received was looked at.
