This is one of the finest Wreaths. It is worth $150,000-175,000. Whether it will meet a reserve that high is unknown until the auction.

  • How many MS-65 or better gem coins are there from the 18th century? There couldn't be many.

Using PCGS (ie market) standards, in copper coins, I would estimate 35 half cents (5 or 6 1793s, 8-9 1794s, 12 1795s, 6-7 1796s [evenly divided amoung the with and without pole varieties], and 3-4 1797s); and 60+ large cents (5 or 6 chains, 8-9 wreaths, 15 Liberty caps, and 25 or 30 1796 and 1797 Draped Bust cents from the Nichols hoard).

i would say there are some early coins like this around

as i think most if not all were special specimem strikings for many collectors in england

and brought back there and forgotten

when america started to become a great nation and the coins collected and the resulting high prices many of these coins returned to american soil
    for hungry usa collectors

i think this is one such coin as per the above
    the coin is to me
    fully struck
    on a perfectly centered and
    almost perfect planchet this coin
was again a special striking for a collecor in england as at the time it was all the rage with english collectors to get special strikings for other countries coins for their collections if not proof then a "specimem"
strike!! as i think the us mint in 1793 has not perfected brilliant perfect proof coinage like the english had 50 to 100 years before!

For that same $80,000.00 you could own 5,000 Accented Hair Kennedies. image

Are you trying to get that Modern thing going again? image You certainly don't have to worry about rolls of these being opened in an attempt to gain "pop top" status. image

If I had disposable income that would allow me to own that coin, it could go for 6 digits, and I'd still be a buyer. image

  • It seems to me that Russ is almost silently sliding out of Kennedys and slowly amassing some other halves as his advertisement of his acquisition of a two center, a walker and another non-Kennedy half attests.

Actually, I prefer lot 7, the 1806 Half Cent in 5 BN.
