What's your feelings about this IH cent?

1) Do you like it?
2) Do you think it acquired its color over time, or artificially?

Very nice looking coin. I don't know enough about coppers to judge cleaning / AT. Pretty either way.

  • I am a novice, but surely someone who AT'ed a fine coin like that would make it more pronounced. I've got some AU-XF IHC with similiar color that I think was caused by album toning. The luster that was left had the look of yours, only a tad darker. Remember I'm a beginner in this series.

Fantastic Indian Cent (and nice picture). You can send it to me right away. I would vote that it is original, but I still need to see more original coins before I was certain.

I think it's been been cleaned, but not badly. The color is pretty, but it's not original. A lot of Indians in Red and R&B holders look this way.

It all depends on the price. If its available for MS-63 money it might be worth it if you like it. If you don't like the idea it's been cleaned, avoid it. Aside from the color enhancement, the coin is Mint State.

BTW 1894 is a very underrated date IMO.

  • Nice coin Paul. I could nitpick about the lack of detail in the first few feather tips and the scuff mark between the OF and America, but I don't think that's what your interested in here. I am a little suspicious of the color especially the way the pink and the green seem to just meet each other in areas rather than blend. The pink looks too vibrant in a couple of spots [like D in UNITED]. I don't really look too much for colored IHCs myself so I am far from an expert. I doubt that PCGS would holder the coin in their current copper paranoia condition. If it is AT, its a subtle effort and a very pretty coin.

    Paul,

The color doesn't look right to me, but if an IHC isn't RD, I stay away from it.

Paul, while it looks very pretty, there is a bit too much rose and green color and not enough RB or BN accompanying it, for me to be convinced it is fully original. That said, it would not bother me in a RB holder and I wouldn't be shocked if it were in a RD holder.

I am trying to view it objectively and overlook the fact that you typically post amazing, original coins here. I hope I haven't performed a double fake-out on myself image

Answer to question 1, Yes, I like the look of it, although it's not struck up very well.
Answer to question 2,......................can't tell. I'd gut it as artificial color/cleaned/retoned.
Is the better question, "Will this coin slab?"
    I say no.

Looks like an M&M coin to me, I wouldn't go anywhere near it image My uneducated guess is that is retoned, but you know me I would buy it in a heartbeat. I like it.

I'll come clean. It's not my coin and I was just curious what others felt about it removed from its Ebay page. And I admit to doing some Photoshop color correction, using the white 2x2 as the corrective point. It has the look of being taken with a Nikon without the right white balance.

I like it, for the right price, and would like it even more if it turns out to be somewhat lustrous. Like Bill Jones said the date isn't an easy one to find this well preserved, and the obverse is unusually nice despite the flaws Toothpuller accurately noted. That aside, I just like the look even though its not natural. The presence of green is odd as Mark stated, and the way it patterns from west to east on both sides makes me wonder if its not flat out AT.

It's interesting how colorful MS copper toning is taboo amongst most of its collectors, and it remains pretty much a purist's market. That's mainly due to the huge number of coins that have been played with over the years, and why I almost feel a guilty pleasure in enjoying a coin like this.

I can't tell you weather or not this coin will slab, but I can tell you that I have seen FAR WORSE coins in slabs. The worst offenders are usually from the 1870s, and some of them are simply awful. In the words of the late Water Breen, "A school boy could tell they had been cleaned."

i do not like this coin at all

the color is from someone who ruined it trying to get more red/brightness out of the coin

    sincerely michael
  • Nice pictures. Looks original. My suspicions are that any guy that tones coins probably isn't gonna put that little amount of color on it because that small amount of color isn't going to increase the coin's value by that much.

Paul, you need to break free from the copper purists, free yourself image I seriously doubt if he is going to get that asking price. For $75-$125 it would be worth taking a run at it.
