PCGS grading of low grade coins......

I won this 1794 large cent off ebay. Do you think it will be graded by PCGS as PO-01 with the date barely readable? I know they require the date to be visible in order to be slabbed. The 4 is there, but just barely. The reverse is slick and worn away.

That's cool, I really like it, it has served it's intended function to the best of it's ability.
  • I agree. It did it's job without getting killed.image Some may say why slab it, but I have never made a PO-01 coin and would think it would be worth the $15 slabbing fee just to do it.

That looks like one nice coin. Without seeing the reverse, I would say yes, PCGS would slab it as a PO-01

Yes, they will slab it. The 4 in the date is enough for this coin. Also, for several coins you don't even needd the date as long as theyhave another way of telling.

Are you all suggesting that PCGS would overgrade this coin and put it in a P-01 slab? image

    Joe.
  • Thanks everyone. I am definately going to slab it if it looks as problem free as the picture.

Even if the date was not there, an experienced large cent collector could tell that it is a 1794 because of the style of Ms. Liberty. The "Head of 1794" coins look like this. The other dates don't.

I imagine that the reverse is completely smooth. I've had sharper examples than this on the obverse that had virtually slick reverses. If you have ever seen some of these coins in AU or better, you would know why. There was no upset rim to protect the devices and some of the lettering was so delecate that it would quickly wear away.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
