  • Don't think so...It's in a PCGS 65 holder and being sold on e-bay...I've e-mailed the seller with an offer.

Let me at least get an answer back before you go after it....image

  • I like it but I'll leave it alone...for you, Cointoast.

  • It's a beautiful coin. But, IMO there is no way that coin isn't getting a little color-boost-aroni. It's like people climbing Mount Everest but using oxygen. They're really up there, but they had a little help.

The coin's colors are In-tense. They're really there, but I think they've had a little help. Just my opinion.

Edited to add: By that I mean in the scan. Nothing AT about it.

"The feedback is spotless!" So was the Bondman after his first 481 feedbacks. And, the feedbacks for Coingame during the past month are on minor coinage, white coins, and for the most part less than gem dollars.

  • That just might be the coolest looking coin I have ever seen. MONSTER!!!

Still waiting to hear back from him to see if he accepts my offer.

  • Cointoast, I'm pretty sure this coin was discussed in a previous thread. In my opinion, there is some (ahem) scanner work going on there. How else can you explain the neon purple ring around the coin on the PCGS slab?

    Previous Thread
  • Thats some Monster Software, the slab has the same color!

Absolutely gorgeous coin. I do not collect Buffs, but if I did, I would be all over it. It looks so good, I would like to image it. My congrats to CoinGame2000 for finding such a gem.

  • I think a quick nitric acid dip would have it looking like a REAL nickel again.
  • So Cointoast.....did Mike DeFalco accept your offer for this gorgeous buffalo nickel?
  • I have been thinking about this thread and since it has been brought to the top I am going to comment.

I have decided in the future I will not comment on scans of color coins that members post here unless I have had direct experience dealing with the seller, or I have seen the coin in person.

Yesterday I commented on two separate threads about being wary of color coins in scans. Whereas being wary is never particularly a bad policy, I've decided the world isn't in need of my speculation about the accurate representation of coins that I have not seen in person.

Sometimes it's easier to cast the shadow of doubt upon the innocent, than it is to shine light upon the guilty. As such, I feel I will leave it alone.

This is purely a personal decision, and others can do as they see fit.

    Carl,

I certainly can't speak for others, but I like your new policy and will try to join you. If I stray, please remind me (gently).

I'm going to be the wet blanket here and say the coin looks AT to me. The colors are just too vibrant. Maybe it’s been AT’ed with computer software, but I just don’t like the looks of it.

    Carl,
I adopted that same personal policy a few months ago. OK, there are some instances where the scans look highly questionable but I have refrained from comment unless I can positively SUPPORT the coin or person. I'll let someone else go out on the limb.

  • Carl and Mark- I tip my hat! A bold position that I respect a great deal. From my first introduction to this Forum, I have been amazed at how unfair I have found some accusations made here about Ebay sellers' auctions. Members making totally unfounded statements based upon poor quality scans/photos. Certainly there are far more sellers on Ebay with poor quality equipment and software, than there are sellers and/or Members with very high quality equipment and software.

I know I can use my HP scanner on a coin on two different days and have 2 different looking scans. I don't make any adjustments, as I am too computer illiterate to know how to tweak the software. It just happens. For some Members to claim a coin is definitely not worthy of a PR-70 DCAM grade, would never make Cameo today or is definitely AT based on a the poor quality scans of a low volumn seller on Ebay, is totally and completely ridiculous! Grading by scan is pure crap.

I admire the both of you for taking this respectable position AND announcing here in such a way!!

DCAMFranklin - Thanks. Carl deserves all of the credit (or blame, from those who don't agree image).

I merely followed his lead, since it seemed like a reasonable approach to take. Still, I wont begrudge others who choose to give opinions in such cases. After all, it's only opinions and if people don't realize that, they're in big trouble!. image

By the way, did you know that your icon was A.T.? Whoops, old habits are hard to break - sorry! Just kidding. image
  • DCAM: Not yet...but Mike DeFalco (the owner of the coin) is sending me the coin tomorrow (with shipping paid both ways) for me to look at in person ... no stings attached.

I will say this much..He totally believes in the coin and in its color being the same as in the scans I (he) posted...

Not many dealers out there would send a coin like that out for inspection to someone that never did business with them.

Either way he's definitely someone I would have no worries about doing business with.

I'm really (really, really) looking foward to getting it in my hands, should be by Monday.

I'll report back and let you know about the colors.

  • Carl and Mark- I am most hopeful that other Members will join in our commitment! image Thank you for starting another POSITIVE trend!

Cointoast- I don't know Mike DeFalco and I have never done business with the man, but I totally agree with you. Your statement of, "Not many dealers out there would send a coin like that out for inspection to someone that never did business with them." is most certainly true! I hope you will be sure to tell us how you find the coin.

It would seem that some Members have been very quick to pass judgement on this fellow. Some very disparaging remarks have been made about his business practices and business ethics. In light of your experience, those statements seem totally unfair and inaccurate.

Coingame is sending a coin out for inspection when the auction is still in progress? Does anyone else find that somewhat unusual. Suppose Cointoast is outbid? Suppose he wins the auction for less than his offer? Is this ethical, when there is nothing stated that I can see in the auction description that provides for an early closing?
  • Cointoast has been mad aware that if the reserve is met (and he is outbid) that the coin will be sold to the high eBay bidder. The reason that I offered to send the coin to him to inspect (at my expense) is because I wanted him to know (in the midst of allegations of AT, intentional color enhancements, etc.) the truth, and what better way than to put the coin in his hand.

  • In case you haven't noticed, sellers cancel auctions early all the time! I don't agree with it, however, it is not contrary to Ebay's rules. Sellers certainly don't need to post a warning of possible early closing in their auction description.
  • DCAMFranklin,

Thank you for this post (making gemtone65 aware of the fact that "ending auctions early" on does not violate eBay rules) and your previous post. However, ending the auction early was never even a consideration in this case because Cointoast wasn't going to receive the coin until AFTER the auction ends on Sunday evening. If the coin sells on eBAy Cointoast will have to FedEX it back to me after he inspects it. Of course if he likes it and it DOESN'T sell on eBay he is more than welcome to purchase the coin at my asking price although he was never under any obligation to do so. As I stated earlier my sole purpose for providing Cointoast the opportunity to view this coin was to produce concrete evidence that knowingly marketing AT coins or utilizing color enhancement techniques is not (nor ever has been) the sort of business practices I care to engage in...for what does it profit a man to inherit the world and lose his soul in the process?

I'm interested in hearing the results of this one. It'll be nice to put to rest one way or the other the claims that Mike's scans are enhanced. I hope they aren't since Mike seems like a nice guy and he has some coins I've got an interest in. image
  • gemtone65gemtone65 Posts: 901 ✭✭✭
Coingame, Dcam: I asked, somewhat rhetorically, whether closing an auction early without notice was "ethical,", not whether it technically violated E-bay rules. I was under the impression that sellers could legally end auctions early without notification. Many professional dealers who sell on E-bay do not close early.

  • I think it's a great coin, but I'm not a serious buyer.

If cointoast doesn't buy it, have him mail it to me so I can see it.

With all due respect Mike, I don't recall reading anything about your intent. (At least not in this thread.) I'm sure you are offering a lovely toned Buffalo Nickle, but I would be highly skeptical of an image literally glowing with red, blue, and purple colors. At least on a Buffalo, that is. Just because the scan doesn't look right, doesn't mean anything was done intentionally.

Many members use this forum seeking opinions of others before making purchases, and while I agree whole heartedly that the finer points between a grade or two in an MS coin are not discernable from a computer image and therefore probably are better off not commented on (as Clankeye and Mark have decided), that doesn't mean images that just don't look right should be spared the opinions when sought.

It certainly is admirable of you to mail the coin out for inspection at your expense. I hope it meets the buyer's expectations and a smooth transaction ensues. image
  • Welll Dan, I guess we will find out about your skeptical viewpoint regarding the scan when Cointoast receives the coin on Monday. I only hope you will issue an apology if Cointoast finds the coin equal to the Ebay scan! Personally, I am MOST impressed by Mike DeFalco's gesture to show the quality of the coin. If Cointoast finds the coin equal to the Ebay scan, then I personally expect you to withdraw your criticism and allegations regarding AT. How about it??? image

DCAM, please cut & paste anything from any of my posts that ever said anything about AT. I know nothing about Artificial versus Natural Toning and have never made any comments to that effect. What I do know, is that I have never seen a Buffalo Nickel in person that had colors anywhere near what Mike's scan shows. I have also never seen a PCGS slab glow in blue, like Mike's scan shows. If it does glow like that in person, that is great for Cointoast, and he will have a truly special piece.

I have already stated that I hope Cointoast likes the coin, and I was sincere about that. They purpose of my previous comment was to let Mike know that I didn't feel like anyone was questioning his intent.

Now, I have to apologize for calling his coin AT, which never happened?

Boy, imagine if I was really guilty of something! image

  • Just received the coin from Mike...

    The coin is just beautiful.

The obverse is just incredible...the purple seems to have settled deep into the depressions on the face enhancing the overall features..unreal.

The reverse is actually better in person than in the photo...

While I thought that the purple on the obverse was just a hair darker in the photo than in person (splitting hairs, no way distracts from the overall appearance) the rest of the colors are dead on.

No tricks, scanner games or "software" enhancement on this one.

Kudos to Mike for sending it on approval. He didn't even ask me for a charge card #.

Based on the coin I saw vs. the photo..I would not heitate buying anything "he" offered based on a photo...

    JMHO....

An apology will come to those that deserve it. One's actions on this board decide that. Insults to other members is not the way to make it happen. Picking on others and bringing up old crap is not going to help. Ok, go ahead throw out more insults.
