what is this coin called?

Saw it on another thread, just curious. I like horses, am trying to learn the names of coins with horses on them.

  • I think thats the stone mountain commemorative
  • That is without doubt, a Stone Mountain Commemorative. They were minted to try to raise money for the carving of the Stone Mountain monument in Georgia. It is designed by Gutzon Borglum, the same fellow who carved out a little rock called Mount Rushmore.

Clankeye-- You got it right! Mt Rushmore is the little rock carving. The Presidents are only about 60 feet tall.

Stone Mountain is t<FONT face=Georgia>he largest high relief sculpture in the world, the Confederate Memorial Carving depicts three Confederate heroes of the Civil War: President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. The entire carved surface measures three-acres, larger than a football field. The carving of the three men towers 400 feet above the ground, measures 90 by 190 feet, and is recessed 42 feet into the mountain. The deepest point of the carving is at Lee's elbow, which is 12 feet to the mountain's surface.

The coin design is only of Stonewall & Lee per Borglum's original plan for the carving. Finacial problems arose and Borglum left to go to work on the smaller Rushmore. The design was changed to include Jefferson Davis when work was resumed. Stone Mountain was finished in 1970

If ever in the Atlanta area it is worth a visit.

Yeah, they used that slogan in the ads. No wonder it tanked.

EVP -- Alot of truth to your statement about the KKK. The City of Stone Mountain was a hotbed of Klan activity starting in 1915 and considered to be their Headquarters through the 1920's - The coin was minted in 1925. As an aside- Stone Mountain now has a Black Mayor.

As a Northern Transplant (New Jersey -Go Mets) I mention the carving not as a symbol of my personal beliefs but as a wonderful and mind boggling piece of Art. How the work was completed is amazing. They have a movie at the park which contains real footage from back as early as the 1950's. Its truly amazing.
  • Fatman--
