If you could own just one coin what would it be?

If you, by some unfortunate circumstance, were a coin collector and your situation prevented you from ever again leaving your house, what would the one coin be that you would want next to you to look at for the rest of your life?

Ogden

I personally would love a 1955 MS 65 Red double die! Man that would be the best!!!

A top-grade, proof 1913 Type 1 Buffalo nickel. Actually, it would look neat next to its brother, the 1913 Liberty. OK, I'll take 'em both!

I know exactly how you feel - that's how I felt about the 1885 until I took the plunge!

With the object not necessarily to get the most expensive coin out there I think I'd go for a coin that has always fascinated me since I first saw it in 1976:

The James Stack 1873cc NA quarter MS66. Finest known of only several pieces.

Depends. If there was a provenance, I would want a first run, first US gold coin that was presented to Washington (assuming there ever was one). Failing that, an 1804 dollar.

  • I'm going to make it simpler, and just include the smattering of coins I have on hand at the moment... and I would choose a beautiful Lincoln commem that I have. I don't know what it is about the portrait on that coin, but I can just sit and stare it for long, long periods of time... and it sounds like I'd have some time on my hands.

Damn it! Lanlord, you beat me to it. I've been Jonesing for that coin since I started collecting. Here's one better...

THE 1907 Extremely High Relief proof that was presented to Teddy Roosevelt. Now in the ANA musuem. If I can't wrestle that one away, there are 4 graded PR68 by PCGS. That will do.

    Moichido,

The 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar does exist in MS66 -- just not in a PCGS holder. This one is graded Specimen 66 by NGC (with a silver plug, no less)! It was once in the collection of Congressman Jimmy Hayes (who helped to get the 1933 $20 legalized), and now is in the collection of the owner of the Childs 1804 Dollar (PCGS-PR68).

I would agree with TDN. My pick would be the Amon Carter 1794 Dollar.

This question comes up here every once in a while and my answer is always the same. I wonder if that has anything to do with the COST of getting one of these. Hmmm.... image

Anyway: 1920-S $10 Eagle. Grade? Nice AU58 Cost? Approx. $15K (ouch!)

  • Oddly enough, I don't have a particular dream coin.

None of the uber-rarities (1804 $1, 1913 Lib 5c, 1933 $20, etc) interest me. Even if I could afford them, I don't think I'd buy them, except for strictly investment purposes.

One coin that might interest me would be an high grade 09S-VDB. And that would be strictly for the "wow" factor to beginning collectors who don't realize that they are overrated.

Now that I think about it, I think I would like to own a nice, off-center Morgan dollar or other early coin. I've always found them really interesting.

  • I would take a chain cent also. It doesn't have to be an MS-65, though. It would be the one Stack's donated to the Smithsonian collection some years ago.

  • An original, exceptionally eye-appealing Draped bust small eagle quarter. Second place is a tie between an MS 1856 Flying Eagle, 1916 Standing Liberty quarter, and 1793 Chain Cent. Tomorrow I might pick any of these four or something else that slipped my mind this time.image
