What is it about this forum and its hate generating capability?

EVillageProwlerEVillageProwler Posts: 5,856 ✭✭✭✭✭
There seems so much anger frequently and casually being thrown about... I was reading the thread about the 5% re-stocking fee, thinking it'd an enlightenting exchange of opinions. There were posts that gave me what I wanted, but I also had to wade through all the other vitriolic posts as well.

Are we not all adults? Do we not have self-control -- not to respond to posts that bother us? Or, can we not respond in a constructive manner? All this back and forth about who is more right or less wrong is just plain unnecessary.

Is there any way we can recognize those who take the high road? A good example would be Mark Feld. He recently got embroiled in a discussion about a consumer service message on his company's web site. Some agreed, and some disagreed. Unfortunately, some of the detracting commentary were less than entirely civil. To Mark's credit, he did not respond in kind.

Let's recognize Mark Feld (coinguy1) for his restraint.

Anyone else we can recognize? Maybe we can start a trend, and making taking the high road a competitive venture?

That is not under our control. Yet, we have it in us to recognize the taking of the high road... Can we not try that?

  • The very first time I posted on this forum was about getting my 2001 Proof Eagles 6 months after I ordered them. I mentioned that my "season" being over, I had no way to sell them except for a loss on eBay, or eat the shipping to return them. One of the first responses was from a regular accusing me of being greedy. I politely responded that I sold them for $4.00 over my cost, and I didn't consider that being "greedy." I really had other things on my mind that I would rather have said.

Here's someone that doesn't know me from Adam making claims about my intentions and motivation. There's a lot of that that goes on here, but it's everywhere else in the world, also.

If I see an arguement brewing, or figure a thread is going to turn into a name calling match, I don't bother to read that thread anymore.

Let's recognize TWODOGS (and Adam) for taking the high road and not responding to a personal and negative post.

So far, TD and MF are tied at 1 apiece.

    C'mon, folks, let's make this a competition!!!

  • EVP- Nice thread. You refer to my 5% re-stocking fee thread. As you said, I thought we could have "an enlightening exchange of opinions." That was the very first time I had seen the practice of a re-stocking fee being utilized on Ebay. All I said was I didn't care for the practice. Then I gave a link to the very first auction I had seen with a re-stocking fee. I never made any derogatory comments about the seller. I never flamed him. I just didn't, and don't, care for the practice of a re-stocking fee and solicited the comments of Members of this Forum. If you, or anyother Member, cares to look at my beginning of the thread, that is what you will find.

Then enters the inflamers. Thrashing, bashing, name calling and other immature bahavior exhibited by Ross,ClarkofKent and Lucy.

Then, Ross goes on to actually accuse me, with ABSOLUTELY NO EVIDENCE, of contacting Ebay about mnmcoins' re-stocking fee and causing the auctions to be cancelled. WRONG!

When I point out that mnmcoins has 206, yes folks 206!, on-going auctions (right now!), he won't retract the accusation. He won't admit he is wrong. He doesn't apologize.

Instead, he goes on to make the accusation that I am "searching (stalking)" his bidding. Like I could give a darn about buying some crappy '64 Proof Sets or DCAM Kennedy coins. Everyone here knows my expectation for those coins. I long ago sold those coins and at much higher prices than they bring today. This guy exhibits paranoia and conspiracy theories that are absolutely sub-surface. I'm with Anaconda. Anybody that can post here over 600 times(!) per month, needs a real life in the worst way!

Just do a search on the troll's handle and see how many times he's linked my eBay dealings. Do it quick, though, before the fraud has a chance to edit his posts.

BTW, troll, how about a link to your auctions? Oh yeah, you can't do that because than we'd all know who you really are.

DCAM - without getting into the specifics of the wars/disagreements you just made mention of - if someone flames you, why not ignore it? And, why not refrain from flaming others in the first place?

You and I have had disagreements before. I even referred to one of your posts as absurd one time (that's about as nasty as I get) and you didn't flame me for it or go to war. I know you are capable of staying out of wars if/when you want to. So, admit it, you must like wars or you wouldn't participate. Russ, Lucy, Clark - same unsolicited advice to you, as well.

Ultimately, the only cure is self-control and restraint. And when someone starts flaming then turn the other cheek. Remember "If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, for you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the Lord will reward you."
  • Good try EVP, but it just seems that to some people, being right (which they seem to equate to proving someone else wrong, anyone) is just THE most important thing in the world!

I don't hang around here enough to know who's in who's corner, what's more, I could not possibly care less, but apparently all the corners are full!

As for nominations - I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything negative about shylock. But then again, where is he? Or is his, and a few others, absence a symptom?

Sorry if I helped trash your thread.
Many of who I consider to be great members including yourself have tried to gather support for everyone to ignore and not respond to folks trying to stir the pot a bit too much.

I know I'm guilty of jumping in when I should have kept my mouth shut. I agree this is something we should all try to control. A trouble maker moves on if no one will play.

On the other side of things many think anything goes and it's up to the person to decide what he or she cares to read. I feel this is something we can control. There is probably plenty for all to read or ignore.

I don't see one answer that fits everyone. Many came here to have fun with the coin hobby. I guess it's up to them to decide how they go about it.

It's a great hobby no matter what.

........after those first two weeks in november i had to follow the lead of other members and just not post while i did some thinking about my motives and involvement in some of the anarchy that ruled for that brief period. in the interim i really put a whuppin' on the PM function!!image i even attempted to mend a few fences.

what i came to understand is that i allowed myself to be distracted from what i initially came to the forums for----to learn about coins and try to become involved with like-minded collectors. in my brief "non-posting-PMing-lurker" hiatus i reacquired that.

as EVP stated, why not just give pause when the urge to enjoin a fracas seems overwhelming. that's my hope for now. i certainly stand to gain as a congenial participant here. why risk that gain over what is nothing more in the final wash than a conflict of personalities?? sometimes agreeing that we disagree is a good way to end a discussion.

  • Mark Feld- You are right about not feeling the need to "flame" you for calling one of my threads "absurd". You conduct yourself like an adult and provide reasonable opinion without exhibiting a need to prove someone else wrong in order to make your own point. You and I are able to agree to disagree. Frankly, I find that is the case with the VAST majority of Members here.

However, the inflaming Members are out PM'ing one another to swoop in, make a verbal personal attacks, call names and can't stand to have someone disagree with them. Go and check the 5% re-stocking fee thread and read of their behavior.

Hey Larry- You continue to amaze me with your ignorance. I have never had more than one identity here. In fact, I was the one urging PCGS to take actions to remove multiple identities. I created a thread asking PCGS to take action to assure that no Member maintained more than one identity on this Forum. Or don't you recall?

On this Forum, some people enjoy stirring the pot ,getting people upset. Other people start flame wars

because they are bored. The majority of us sometimes have a very bad day and are vunerable at that

time to a lack of tact or a perceived attack or challange. Many of us have strong personalities and we

aggresively defend ourselves, perhaps too forcefully when we believe we have been wronged. The majority on this

Forum are quiet, peaceful folks who often are shocked and stunned by the sometimes crude, aggresive

irritating and almost violent cyber abuse they read on the Forum.I do not know of a sure fire solution

except after a fair warning , ignore such extreme exhibitions of trollish behavior, its called shunning.

If you accidently insult another good person, use PM to appologize. We are in effect a family of sorts

and family members sometimes argue, but the need is for a greater measure if kindness

to people, their ideas and personalities.People are not always what may we want them to be,

but we must offer reasonable acceptence for reasonable behavior. Be well Bear

Back to EVP's point. How bout some kudos to those who don't even get sidetracked on this stuff and stick to the point and talk only about COINS!

My vote goes to Roadrunner and Michael. They post when they have informative information to share about COINS! Sometimes they must feel that they are sitting on the sidelines and lurking. But I say that lurking is a virtue.

Do you know what the anger on this forum reminds me of sometimes? Road rage. You take 2 relatively normal people, someone does something stupid and cuts the other off, or drives too slow... tempers flare and someone's car ends up in a serious wreck. What gets into people?

My vote for high informative value goes to Shylock (Paul). I didn't know zip about IHCs until I read his informative posts on this forum. As a type collector, I really appreciated his insight. Thanks Paul!

EVP and I have conversed privately on this topic several times. It really is unfortunate that many threads have the capability to become informative yet quickly degrade into sludge. What I've noticed that in the quest to "stir things up" (as people seem to rationalize after the fact), there is generally an absence of respect, humility, and courtesy. If you have a problem with someone, I would suggest that you take it to the PM arena. On another front, we have the reactionaries who seem to see an opportunity in every thread to make "a point" with no discussion permitted. They go a little nutsy on responses and again, things seem to escalate. This goes back to the humility comment....had a great prof at one point that hammered into me that "as smart as you think you are, you're not that smart" (he won a Nobel prize a couple of years ago...he still doesn't think that he's that bright).

I, for one, will continue to take a low profile and offer information or comment when I think it appropriate. I suspect that there are many others like me (that would join in a little more often) but get turned off as threads go south.

<< <i>there is generally an absence of respect, humility, and courtesy. >>

Respect and courtesy are earned. Trolls by their nature deserve neither.

Read the thread EVP referenced in his first post.

The thread was nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to attack Morris. In this thread, DCAMTroll tries to justify it by stating:

<< <i>I only asked for the opinions of Members regarding the 5% re-stocking fee. I had never seen this practice being used on Ebay and that was the first auction I had seen with such a charge. >>

    Guess what, folks? He lied.

Read the thread the troll posted on October 30.

He links to an auction by JWCameo, who happens to also charge a restocking fee; the same as Morris at 5%. He's a liar and a fraud who has never contributed a thing to this forum. The only consideration he deserves is to be shown the door.

That is great, and I applaud that of course. But this is the US Coin forum and there are a lot of aspects to the hobby of numismatics that are not straight coins and coins alone. The hobby has branches like any tree (to use a tired metaphor), there are so many different things to discuss, the elements of the hobby are as diverse as the people who collect.
Different people bring different skills to this forum. On some levels you have the numismatist's numismatists. You have the specialists, you have the moderns, the classics, the young, the old, the this the that.
There is room for all types here. There is room for serious threads, funny threads, auction related threads, submission threads-- you name it. There is tons of space here! Room for all.
This board is going 24/7, seven days a week. It can't be all coins, coins, and nothing but the coins every minute of it.
This is an active, bustling forum. It has life. It has fights, lyin', ego flyin' and women cryin' (no offense to women. I probably cry more). It's life in action, and coins are at the heart of what brings us all here. Coins. Because we're all interested in them. But, what makes this forum truly worthwhile for me, are the things beyond coins that I have gotten out of participating here. YES! Let there be talk, and let it be about coins. But, COINS have a very broad palette, and the canvas is huge. This forum supports the most beginning collector to the most advanced. Threads for all I say! Threads for all.

I now release anyone still reading from this rambling dialogue.

  • keog,

You do have a valid point, in that

<< <i>If you have a problem with someone, I would suggest that you take it to the PM arena >>

Unfortunately, there are those who have their profiles and PMs turned off. Almost like they have something to hide, and can't handle one-on-one confrontation. I've seen this stance defended as, "Anything I have to say I can say in the public forum." The way I see it, these are the kind of people who just like to read their own words, and get off on knowing that other people are reading them.

Let's say that back in October, he wasn't concerned, or didn't notice the restocking fee.
Then, NOW, for some reason, it has come to his attention. And NOW, he wants everyone's opinion on re-stocking fees - is it OKAY to ask? For others opinions?

I think it's okay to ask...maybe a little in bad taste to actually cite a particular auction, and also one of this forum's own member's auctions....but: it's still okay to ask.

Russ - maybe Dcam isn't as smart or as observant as you...maybe he is auction challenged...hmmm? Who knows? Back off a bit...why the rush to judgement? Why the endless attack? But, really, who cares?

Unless the guy is EVIL incarnate - who cares? Not me....HEY DCAMFRANKLIN!!! I am gonna charge re-stocking fees till hell freezes over and if you don't like it - then don't bid - okay? Okay Russ? Point?

Sometimes things are belabored to the point of boredom here.
