Overused and now meaningless words on eBay auctions...

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,148 ✭✭✭✭✭
Got me thinking today when I saw an MS66 cent described as "perfect" Granted, a PCGS 69, and even a 68 for that matter, looks perfect to the naked eye, but isn't SOMETHING visibly wrong if it is in a 66 holder? What other words are just used way too much to have meaning?

    PQ
    Upgrade

Now that I think of these words, I think I'll write up some eBay auctions. I've got a bunch of PQ coins that might upgrade for sale. I hope all you will L@@K when I sell them.

I hate the condasending and pretencious bullcrap like:

1."Bid on this , or you'll be sorry!!!"
2."certified", but upon clicking on the tab, its ofcourse ACG!!!
    3."One of a kind"
    4."colored"
    5."gem toned"
    6."nickle"
7."double die", its actually doubled die.
    8."overstamped", should be overstruck.
9."lady liberty", WE KNOW ITS AN ALLEGORICAL, AND FEMALE DEPICTION FOR GOD'S SAKE, STOP
    THE INSANITY !!!
10."They are bound to increase in value", can everyone say FTC, and Hobby protection Act.

    Best regards,
    Brian.

"no reserve" when there is a minimum bid required, which is, practically speaking, a reserve.

The most overused word, hands-down, is "rare". I get a particular kick out of it when used like this: "RARE unopened 1964 proof set!". Beyond the fact that they minted nearly 4 million, there are always between 100 and 150 listed on any given day.

We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.

  • There are some sellers that seem to be relatively straight shooters, but I agree, there is quite a bit of hype in the ole coin biz especially on eBay.

Having said that, "rare" is in fact, a relative term.
