Images and coin discussions? The board says....

I've been struggling with the idea of posting coin images here from time to time, for discussion purposes. I've thought about choosing various examples which, for one reason or another, might be unusual, interesting, special, controversial, informative fun, etc.
I have hesitated (except for one recent thread) because, quite frankly, I have concerns that some might misconstrue my intentions. I am afraid of someone thinking that in posting coins for discussion purposes, I'm doing so in order to hype or sell coins here. If that is going to be the perception, than I'd just as soon not do it.
So, at the suggestion of a helpful board member, I am throwing this idea out to the collective board. Please let me know if you like the idea? If you do, feel free to make suggestions regarding what you might like to see, though I can't promise that I'll be able to accommodate you. If, for any reason, you don't like the idea, just say so. No questions asked or arguments made
I will wait a couple of days and tally your votes. If the secret (except to the helpful board member) predetermined yes vote percentage is reached, than I will give it a try. If not, I'll skip it. Let the voting begin............

Post away!
I think you should do what you intend. Hopefully, it will be quite instructional for a great deal of folks here.
As for the perception issue, I am pleased that you've consulted the membership. That's awfully polite of you. However, I feel that you should not govern your well-intentioned actions based on a fear of potential misperception. You can't please everyone all the time. And, some folks will take offense no how careful you were with your wording.
I am confident that the typical board membership will properly ascertain the context of your post.

Did I say, "post"? POST them. This is what this board is DESIGNED to discuss.

Point #1: Most of the truly valuable posts I see on this board come prome professionals or those whose livlihood is derived from buying and selling coins.
Point #2: I don't have instant access to those professionals since I can't attend major coin shows on a weekley basis. This board gives me an form of access/information I would not otherwise have.
Point #3: If the pros/dealers don't post because they fear their reputations will be hurt by 'over commercializing' the site, I loss access to their insight on those coins/issues they find interesting enought to them to comment on.
Point #4: EVERYONE who posts images/comments on a coin they currently own has an inherent conflict of interest with regard to their comments. This conflict is the same whether the owner is a professional or simply a 'collector'.
Point #5: Disclosure of any conflict allows me (the reader of the post) to make my own judgment as to whether the owner/posters comments are influenced by their relationship to the coin/issue under discussion.
Summary: If you disclose your relationship to the coin (i.e., is it an inventory coin currently for sale, formerly owned coin which shows a neat variety, etc.) the thread reader is capable of judging how conflicted your views/comments are. As a collector, I would choose to have the input of the pros understanding I have to excercise some discretion/judgment in weighing their comments based on the fact that they may have a desire to sell the coin to me or others.

I am totally for it. With your background and knowledge of coins, I know it could'nt help but be interestiong and informative to everyone on this board. Thanks for making this effort.
Mark, I was wondering, as a former grader and a longtime coin dealer, do you have a personal favorite coin or coin series?? You and a lot of the other dealers, especially ones who were former graders, have seen most of the best coins in existance, so I am very curious, after seeing all those magnificent coins, if one coin or one coin series is a favorite of yours. Your reputation, as well as your participation here, make it clear that your motives for posting interesting pictures for discussion here are beyond question.
Dpoole votes "yea."
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.
Always looking for nice type coins

It led to some very interesting discussions on this forum. Discussions that branched off into other discussions, on and on.
Mark, what you are talking about could be a very good thing. Bring it on... I mean haven't you even been an instructor in grading and other things at ANA sponsored events? Why on earth wouldn't I want to reap the benefit of that? Admittedly, free is kind of expensive for this service, but maybe you can send us all a check each week to compensate us for having to read what you post.

I definitely could not come up with a/one favorite coin I have seen/graded/handled. But, a few thoughts come to mind, in answer to your question. I have seen a good number of our hobby's famous rarities and it certainly is exciting to hold a 1913 Liberty nickel or 1804 dollar in your hand, but items like that wouldn't be at the top of my favorites list.
In no particular order, here are some coins and coin types that have left lasting impressions:
An MS65BN Chain Cent - I first saw the coin in the pre-certification days in an auction in 1980 and then again, roughly 15 years later, while grading at NGC;
A FULLY RED Draped Bust large cent;
An 1851 Type 1 proof Three Cent Silver piece - it appeared in the Eliasberg sale, came to NGC for grading while I worked there, was assigned a PR66 grade, was later crossed into a PCGS holder and I was privileged to be able to place it with a client of ours last year. I believe it to be THE only proof Type 1 Three Cent Silver piece in existence - it is a UNIQUE type coin as such;
A superb mint state Half Disme;
I love the designs of 1796 dimes and quarters and have seen a few amazing ones;
Proof bust dollars;
Ultra High Relief Saint Gauden's $20's are incredibly beautiful;
Matte proof silver commemoratives;
A number of the virtually perfect Eliasberg gold coins, obtained directly from the mint at the time of issue;
Judd-1776, the exquisite and unique pattern Double Eagle
The above mentioned coins are off the top of my head. I'm sure that with a bit of time, I could add quite a few to the list!
I for one would be extremely pleased to see images that make special points ( as outlined in your post). You have much to share with members of this forum and this could be a highlight of the posts on US Coin Forum.
However, I am certain that if you show active inventory that you will in due course be criticized for merchandizing by some members of the forum. ( As you know,the forum members are not above criticism) I am also sure that should you use active inventory to make the points we would have other dealers posting inventory items. This could be an outstanding addition to the forum or not depending on how it is presented and the quality of the points made.
I have some thoughts on how to make the transition but I will toss these comments out for your consideration.

Here is my proposal - what about an agreement that any coin I post is not available for sale to any board member, unless that board member had already been aware of and mentioned the coin to me or someone at Pinnacle, prior to it being posted here? That way, I can feel free to discuss the coins, without fear of hyping them or advertising them, etc. By the way, I plan on posting some coins that aren't necessarily ones that anyone will want, by the time I get through discussing them, anyway.

like the old saying goes, you can please all of the people some of the time.................need i finish??
it seems clear what your intent is. you want to post coin pics for discussion/edification. no matter how you go about it the trolls will arrive along with serious discussion, offers may come to buy and we may, despite those things, learn something along the way. just post the pics and lead the discussion while keeping your motive honest and sincere. that's about the best you can do. of course you can climb into the squirrel cage and try to figure out a way to please everybody all the time, but why bother?
my take is that you have some moral integrity and will do the right thing. i, for one, say get on with it!!

Please do not hesitate to post pictures ... we have a lot of forum members, including myself, who need to be better educated on the type classics in which you deal. I would not for a moment consider it a case of you "pitching" a coin for sale. You have built up a well deserved reputation and the regulars know you are not out to sell, but rather to share and educate. We appreciate it.

what about an agreement that any coin I post is not available for sale to any board member
I would like to buy most of the coins I see here, so I don't like that rule.
But I understand your dilemma, as this isn’t an advertising forum and somebody will eventually come along and complain Pinnacle is using this for free advertising
So how about this solution:
When you want to take the time to share a coin picture, just drop your Pinnacle reference from your signature line so it can't be interpreted as an advertisement. It's just a coin you saw at work.

Your friends have spoken. You are an overwhelming go!!!!
By the way, if any of you are expecting anything from me (in the way of descriptions) like what you see Michael write, think again.
That will make Monday a little nicer.
never know who is going to come in here, a future employer, a potential customer, or some tender child. And posting
a photo here of essentially anything, especially a coin, or pah lease.... a piece of currency, would likely be misconstrued. It could be a coin
you're trying to sell (filthy luchre), or one you've sold (trying to make it stick...), or one you want to buy (is that why you're saying
something negative) or one selected at random by a random image selector (we'll have to run some tests....). It could offend.
Trust me. I mean, posting one to many moderns could brand you as a Russ wanabe. Posting too many images of a classic and
you're trying to kiss up to the guys with money.
I say stay mit das straight schtick.
