Interesting Poll: Trick question or is it?

The year is 2010. You are at a major coin show and a door prize raffle results are announced.
You can't believe your ears, the winning number matches your ticket. You come to the booth and
are told that there is another drawing being held an hour after yours, there are only two coins left
, you can only pick one of the two, leaving the last one for the final drawing. The two coins in front
of you are both certified by PCGS.

They are:

1. 1999D GA 25c PCGS-MS67
2. 1881S S $1.00 PCGS-MS67

both coins are brillian white and after inspecting both , you agree with the grades,
which coin do you select, remember , the year is 2010. Is it 1 or 2?

Have fun collecting!
Brian.

I guess I'd go with the Morgan.

I would definately choose #2 because I dont go with the whole modern thing and I think the price of those pop tops will go down by 2010 anyway because more of them will be found.

Morgan for me. The quarter could be worth more in 2010, but like the 1973-S Silver Ike, once the demand was filled the value dropped like a rock. When the state program is over, my guess is--so is the market.

I'd do with the morgan because the GA design is among the worst of the state quarter series so far.
  • Let's see, 12,760,000 versus 488,744,000...hmmm, add to that the 118 year age advantage, and you know, I'd take the Morgan. Always buy what's undervalued.

Morgan but on the other hand in 2010, am I able to assume the things that would make the Georgia
quarter a better choice. Would it be a pop 1 coin. I don't know.

In 2010, the MS67 GA quarter might be worth more. The Morgans never really circulated and were hoarded, even today most examples are MS. The GA quarters circulated widely and weren't hoarded, as much as Delaware and PA were anyways. Even if it isn't worth more in 2010, the % gain from today's market prices will likely be better... and using 1989-1990 prices, you might break even on the Morgan, but I doubt it... dead money.
  • Is the 1881- S S a typo or does it have to with the trick part of the question? image
A thing of beauty is a joy for ever
  • I'd have to take the Georgia quarter because I'd know that all the guys that wanted the 81S are from this forum and well... you know what brawlers they can be! image

I think the second S stands for Silver as in S$1

I had a really nice 1858-O Seated Half in PCGS MS-62 I sold for $400. I'd rather have that coin in 2010 even though its worth much less than those other two are today.

If I had to pick one I'd go for the 1881-S $1. I agree with the person who said the GA Qtr is much rarer but everyone who wants one will have one making them worth very little.

    The Morgan.

The 25C Ga. may be low pop now. We'll see in 8 years.

I review the current coin prices and see which one was a better value. I would choose that one. If it was the Georgia quarter, so be it. I might sell the quarter to purchase a better coin, but if the doller were the better choice I would likely keep it.
  • Morgan.

  • I'll take the 1999-D GA Quarter in MS67.
In 2010 the MS67 Morgan will probably still be priced around $500 or less, so considering possible upside on the GA quarter to none on the Morgan, I'll take the Quarter.

BTW, I already have one PCGS MS67 1999-D GA Quarter. image

There won't be any major shows in 2010.image

...and the winning number could never match mine.

I'd take whichever is the more valuable. If the 1,200 Georgia coins I've seen
are in any way indicative of all of them made then there is little doubt about
    which coin is rarer.

To me these coins are both common as dirt. Even in 67 they are pretty common, or will be so. So, I would take the Morgan as a type piece I suppose. Plenty of statehood 68s that would make better type pieces.

    Greg
  • If I get to pick then... since I don't care to own either coin, then whichever is more valuable. And I'll walk it to the nearest dealer table. image

If I have to pick now, then I'd go with the quarter for the same reason as MJCoin. The 1881-S is extraordinarily easy to find in high grade, the series is already wildly popular, so there's very unlikely to be any upside surprise.

On the quarter side, it is currently only a fraction of the population. Also in 2010 the state quarter series will have just ended, and perhaps collecting them in high-grade will have become wildly popular. So even if the population grows ten-fold or more, it could still be signficantly more valuable. That is, of course, if it will cross to CGSOTD* MS67 holder. image

  • I'd pick the Franklin too, but since it wasn't a choice I'd go with the Morgan, unless it's AT.
