  • C 30-45 minutes. It depends if they have new coins to show me or just want to talk.

Usually C (30 to 45 min) but sometimes quite a bit more if I have the time and the dealer isn't too busy to talk a bit.

Unfortunately for me, the few coin shops in my area carry so little inventory that interests me, that I rarely go, and when I do, there isn't much to look at to keep me there. Perhaps I need to expand my numismatic horizens.

  • Usually about 30 minutes. I always purchase something for my "at home collection" just for taking up the guy's time.
  • D. Usually isn't anything new, but always plenty of topics
  • as much time as I can!

actually, I went to my coin shop today to sell a bunch of inventory stuff that I have been sorting for months.

I have an outstanding relationship in this particular shop and I suantered my way into the shop in my usual gregarious style telling the owner how I was prepared to greatly expand his inventory of desireable coins with the "booty" i was prepared to sacrifice for the well being of his enterprise. THese included hundreds of 40-47 Walkers in sparkling VG condition, as well as a roll of the flatest Standing Liberty Quarters you ever saw, and about 600 common Washingtons.

I further chastized him for having NOTHING new to offer me, declaring I was having second thoughts about sharing this treasure trove with him.

    Well shut my mouth!

Two beauties - considering I was not willing to spend a fortune on this set - both VF+.

I usually spend Saturday Morning at one shop and part of Saturday afternoon at another, but had missed Saturday this week.

    Made for a great Monday!

Until the dealer says something rude or insulting. In such case, it's usually "A" -- less than 15 minutes. I guess I just don't get a kick talking to dealers, especially know-it-alls who think they know more than I do because I'm just a dumb collector.
  • I'm in a big city. I circulate between 5 shops on a regular basis, but I try to visit every shop (10/15) within a 15 mile radius at least once every three/six months. Length of time spent depends on inventory, how welcome I feel, how much I'm allowed to explore the pile he's tossed in the corner, what reference materials are available for general use, how willing he his to take stuff out of the safe to show me. Also depends on how many times I've been there before. I usually always buy something if the prices are reasonable and he takes time to talk with me. I'll generally just explore and educate myself if I know the end prices will be unreasonable. In most cases I ask for his opinion on the coin's grade and best price. If our grades don't match then we discuss differences. If he won't talk or we can't agree I say thanks and leave. If they match or are close then I compare the book price. If they match or come close I'll buy, if not I'll try to negotiate. It's generally never less than one hour, can be 3-4 if I've time and all the stars line up. It's the "hunt" that makes this such a great hobby, keep searching.

  • I have a good relationship with two of my local coin shops. Many of the times that they call me to come by and see what is new from my want lists I spend more than an hour looking things over. Last time I went to look at a 79-CC Morgan that Bob had called me about and ended up passing on that one but got a nice 89-CC instead. Took about an hour to look over the lastest new inventory and decide on this one (we think it is a nice XF and are still waiting to see what PCGS has to think about it).

I don't think there are any shops in my area, but if there were a shop or two i would maybe spend 1/2 hour Gorking if they had a good inventory.
I would probably have to go into New York city to find a shop or 2.

My answer is D. There are about 7 coin shops within 35 miles of me. I know the owners and the
clientelle. Its either to hang out and talk coins, sometimes I'll help out a dealer friend on a Saturday,
for a few hours just to have some coffee and to have fun. I help them grade occasionally, especially
the older ones who can't see well. (This is Florida, we are still learning how to vote!!)

  • Hav'nt been to my local coin shop for ages, this year I've been hitting all the local coin shows and having a blast but when I did go to the shop I'd spend at least 45 minutes there.
