Now, here's a first; coin arrived postage due!

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
Seller charged me $2 for shipping, stuffed the coin and a little padding in a #10 envelope with a 37¢ stamp and it arrives postage due for 12¢! Is that cheap, or what? Anybody else ever get a coin postage due?

EDIT: Oh, yeah, and it's a business envelope with his address sticker pasted over - probably kyped it from work.

I can't say I've ever been so lucky...usually when packages are underpostaged they are returned to the sender for additional postage and take additional time to deliver. I thought "postage due" was a thing of the past.

Why 12 cents? The extra ounce should be 23 cents. It must have been under one-ounce, but didn't meet the size limit, so you were charged extra handling. I had it happen to me about 2 years ago. I think it's funny. image

That is incredibly rude. It shows a total lack of respect for the coin, the buyer but more so the Seller himself.

    fcloud,

It got popped for thickness, not weight. That's why it was 12¢, instead of 23¢. At least that's what my carrier told me.

  • at least you got the coin. I had a guy send me an Ike in a no. 10 envelope and it was empty. You could see the outline of the coin and the envelope was slit at one end.

    LM,

I'm not going to neg him, it's not a big enough offense for me to get riled about. A seller really has to screw me before I pop them.

    Here's the auction, though.

And, yes, the coin does look that bad. It was stored in a vinyl flip. I'll give it a little TLC and bring it up to PR66 or so.

Hmm. Nobody else has negged him, either. Maybe it doesn't deserve a full neg, but I would have let him know my displeasure.

  • why not neutral him(don't go there!) or give him a positive with the comment "curiously, the coin came postage due" then let the rest of the ebay world determine how magnanimous you were, seriouslyimage

Something new for my memorabilia collection:

    Removed.

I'll add it to the EMPTY padded envelope I got, after waiting over two months, that was supposed to have a proof set in it. Now, that seller I negged.

  • Can a person put that 37c label on their own package? I thought that the post office put it on there after they weighed it and calculated the postage.

I mean, the seller just didn't stick a regular stamp on it. Maybe there was a mix up at the post office, and it wasn't the seller's fault.

I think goyankeez hit the nail on the head.

That is the first thing I thought when I saw the envelope. This envelope was posted at a post office. The Post Office screwed up not the seller.

That is also probably why it was forwarded to you instead of being returned to the sender for postage due.

    IMO. Joe.
  • Yea it has happened to me, I won a whole batch of canadian pennies on ebay and it was 4.00 shipping anyway the package arrives in a padded mailer with the pennies just dumped in with me owing 27 cents postage due, evidently the guy just had the stamps and envelopes at home and just dropped it in a mail box. took along time to set this straight with seller over 27 cents , but when your right your right and things need to be set straight when they are not. image

Actually, looking at the envelope, the postage due is 0.12 cents, not 12 cents. You overpaid!

    Neil
  • Whoa!!

In fairness to "Nancy" it looks like she took it to the post office and they determined the postage there. There is a metered stamp.

I think the PO messed up here. Or am I missing something?

gee whiz, another interesting transaction brought to you courtesy of "compuCHEAP."

TWELVE CENTS my friends, and it appears the seller is not to blame and has offered a full TWELVE CENT refund.

yes, this is the type of ebay seller that must be rooted out and destroyed.

    good work.

    p.s.

please let us know if and when the refund check does arrive.

The 12¢ is not really the issue here - it's just the amusing part. He charged $2 for shipping, and stuffed the coin in a #10 envelope with 37¢ postage. It could easily have been destroyed or popped out of the envelope in shipping. Gee, should I give him a glowing positive for that?

edited after I read the feedback comments........I would have also left a neutral...........NOT because of the 12c but because of the POOR RIPOFF shipping!

i dunno, Russ, how do you value your time. this seller sent you the 10 dollar coin within, it appears, 5 days or so of auction end. went to the post office and stood on line to have the post office apply what they determined to be the proper postage. for me, just getting to the post office costs a few cents in gas and depreciation of the value of my car. there's usually someone, if not several people, already there in front of me so i'll be there a few minutes. time is money, and this person did obviously spend time getting you this coin.

you know what, if this was a couple hundred dollar coin i'd say maybe, just maybe, you'd be justified in leaving a "less than glowing" POSITIVE feedback. however this was a minor transaction that you obviously did not request special handling for (not that it deserved it). you got your coin, quickly, albeit with a post office error that you had to pay for, (but which, apparently, the seller would have reimbursed you for had you let them know).

i think what frustrates me is you have to do stuff so dang quick.

tell me honestly that now that you know the p.o. was at fault for the postage due that you would still give this seller a neutral.

    a suggestion:

next time you are "slighted" don't run to the computer to post it on the boards. sit and think about how it could have happened. sit quietly and count to ten and then go on with life.

when you get screwed on an "anaconda," that's the one i want to hear about.

    geez!
The fact is that Russ paying 2.00 for shipping or anyone paying that is EXPECTING MORE THAN A #10 envelope with a stamp on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the 12c is a joke and an anecdotal side note.

If I were in the buyer's position I would expect no less than a small bubble mailer or at the very least an envelope with that cardboard stuff in it protecting the coin.

The way that coin was shipped is a JOKE! PERIOD

His/her poor shipping earned them the neutral.

to have the NERVE to charge 2.00 shipping and then to spend 37c ought to be a crime!
  • RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
    Zenny,

Yeah, maybe I should start shipping my coins out in a #10 with 37¢ postage, instead of a Safe-T-Mailer, and a padded envelope, and insurance, and driving to the post office for $2.95 - a whopping 95¢ more than this seller charged.

  • zennyzenny Posts: 1,547 ✭✭
goose- do you not value your time at all. time to get to the post office, time to get in line, time to wait while the usps employee improperly weighs and charges you for the item you're shipping, time to get back home, time to post a response to a spurious neutral feedback. i've gotten coins in envelopes numerous times and it has never pissed me off, especially if it was a cheap coin that was delivered to me quickly.

    zenny,
I value my time BUT I don't blatantly RIP people off.

when I sell on ebay. I charge 1.50-1.75 for uninsured shipping in a bubble mailer no matter how many coins you win. I also then charge for insurance at Exact USPS rates, not inflated ones like many crooks on ebay do!

If I were to start a thread asking "What do you expect if you pay 2.00 shipping" I don't think ANYone would respond(including you) that you would expect to receive your coin in a #10 envelope with 37c worth of postage.
  • relayerrelayer Posts: 10,570

Seems like a pretty chickensh!t complaint to me, especially since the PO determined the postage.

After you chemically alter the surface and list your new shinny AH on eBay do you think you should be negged for making $2.12 profit on your exessive postage charge or should you be negged for selling an altered coin?

as stated above i have received inexpensive coins in plain envelopes plenty of times and had no problems with them, let alone leaving neutral feedbacks about them.

i've grown curious now that if the overcharge was for the envelope being too thick, would this be an indication that there was a decent amount of padding surrounding the coin?

and finally, goose, you've got to be kidding that this deal was in any way a rip off. as long as someone tells me how much i'm paying for shipping up front, and i receive the coin in good order and without delay, i have not in any way been ripped off.

edited to tip my cap to relayer.

    2.00 shipping for a 37c postage and a 3c envelope is a good deal?

    You've got to be kidding!

If everyone would be happy with that and expect nothing more, I can throw stamps on envelopes and leave them in my mailbox for the mailman to take with him.

Do you think the guy I just sold my '56 Flying eagle to would like that??
I've still got it here waiting to go out. If you cover the possible loss, I'll mail it that way.

I think I'll start that thread
  • danglendanglen Posts: 1,674 ✭✭✭
If a letter is under one ounce, but is over 1/4 of an inch thick, it needs an extra 12 cents postage. Once the weight goes over an ounce, then the thickness requirement no longer applies.

this is a 10 buck coin that was padded so well that russ had to pay extra.

what was the deal for your fe. insured - registered - fedex ?

russ got what he paid for, an undamaged coin in better than timely manner, the seller hand delivered it to the post office.

    Goose-

$2 for S/H is CHEAP, even on a low dollar coin.

In trying to come up with a FAIR S/H price when selling, I built this table. It turns out somebody has to cover the cost and fees so all the nice people on eBay can purchase their coins cheap. As you can see, most are money losing propositions.

If you drive out all of the sellers, you may have to start paying a fair price for your coins.

laughing is good, i do it all the time. not leaving someone who deserves positive feedback for me is not funny.

he got the coin quickly and safely. end of story.

    where's the problem?

next time i sell you a 10 dollar hazy piece of metal i promise to send registered insured. ;-)

i'm getting tired of editing to tip the cap, relayer. but, alas, it must be done.
  • zenny, the seller shouldn't have sent in regular envelope, if it had gone through the sorting machines
it could have damaged the coin. If the seller is going to send that way postage should have been lower,
he didn't need to go to PO could have put a stamp on it. I do think the postage due part should have
been left out of his feedback though.
  • goose3goose3 Posts: 11,471 ✭✭✭
If I add 15.00 to my bid, that's exactly how I'd expect to receive it.

It's pointless to keep arguing about this because you guys obviously would not have any problem overpaying for poor shipping and I and others would.

edited to ad that I bought a 20 or 25.00 coin and paid a couple bucks shipping for it once.....It ALMOST arrived. I got an empty envelope because whatever machine it went through knocked the coin out, as evident by the tiny slit and obvious marks on the envelope.
