Will 2002 gold coins go crazy?

It looks like there are not a whole lot of 2002 gold proof coins being produced. Do you think a 4 coin set that grades out to pr69 will go really crazy price-wise?

Now ya see, you just aren't paying enough attention to those idiots on the coin TV show. Their story is that the 2000 was an incredibly low mintage, the 2001 was even lower still and the 2002 is lower than both of those. Now how could you not accept that kind of science in predicting that these things would be rarer than a roll of 1932 double eagles which, by the way had a much higher mintage...

You thnik those guys would lie to us?

Crazy no, but they might do well if the numbers are low. Thus, the real question is, what are the sales figures for 2002?

  • total for the one ounce is 33,000 coins. I dont know if that is a very low mintage or not in relation to gold coins. Just curious

33,000 IS a low mintage, but at $1,000 for the set, you knock a lot of the riff-raff out of the neighborhood. The gold and platinum proof coins have never caught on with collectors the same as silver eagles and other less expensive coins have. I think the initial cost has had a lot to do with that. When you consider that you have to show up with a grand or more every year to keep your date set going, that discourages a wide-spread appeal.

The mintage for 2002 (as noted by presleyh) is correct... I have yet to find a mintage for proof 2001, 1 ounce gold eagles... Anyone?... Cheers, RickO
