A Slight Preview of My Research Paper to Be

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,229 ✭✭✭✭✭
Ok... here is the beginning of my paper on art in coins coming together...

First document is my outline: Not to shabby for a simple outline image
Second document is my current Works Cited page (more sources to come, I think) When you ask the ANA for a few books... you get a lot image

Tell me what you think,

Jeremy

The contraversy over the mint's alteration of the Missouri design might be worth discussing. Especially the way they took the arch in the distance and moved it to the foreground--I would give them some license to change the two man canoe to a more historically accurate Lewis and Clark long boat.

    CG

And an other point. You might want to see if the Mint's website still is showing the finalist designs for the Sac. If so, check it out. IMO they chose the hokiest, cartoon-like obv design over artistically stronger designs that showed a Native American woman as a stronger personna.

Cal- I like the idea... but (I have to think like my English teacher here)
1- There won't be enough sources on it (especially not "reliable" ones)
2- It is straying a little too far from the humanities to be allowed

Remember, this represents 45 minutes of arguing over two days to be able to do this topic image

What kind of teacher wouldn't think that numismatic art has anything to do with the humanities? Your teacher seems rather closed-minded, if you ask me. Good job on the outline! Can't wait to read the finished work.

  • Looks good. Even if you only use half the sources in your essay, it should be good. The outline is organized and neat. Follow it when you write, and the paper should flow smoothly.

RATHER closed-minded??? That's an understatement... it took until I found a picture of an engraver sculpting the JFK obverse in a book... I shoved it in her face and said, "sculptures are art, therefore, coins are art." I won image
I also plan on adding a section on world coins, but will put that in the outline later...

My ultimate goal is to publish this (in the Numismatist? I hope). Some books say that they can't be quoted in any way (especially for profit/business)- does this include them being cited as the original source? I don't know if I could get this published if this were the case... image

    Jeremy

PS- I will definitely put the paper up here when I am done, and Cameron, I think I will probably have some bit of a snippet from at least every source listed.

First, I'm curious, how long are you planning to make this paper?

And regardless of your answer, I will give you three words of advice:

    Brevity, clarity and focus.

I do not take giving advice lightly. Most advice isn't worth the powder to blow it up. But, no matter how long your paper is going to be, if you keep these three things in sight, and re-read and re-read your work asking "Does this need to be here?" Then, I think you will be in pretty good shape.

Your outline looks good. It looks ambitious. I would suggest erring on the side of leaving things out, rather than putting too much in.

The minimum is 6 double-spaced pages... me... probably 9-11 pages image

I wll be sure that it isn't too verbose and sticks to the topics, not to tangents.

    Jeremy:

I agree wholeheartedly with Clankeye. I am a professor at a university and have written bunches of articles as well as some books (studyguides) so I have some background. Your outline is is superb but I worry that to do the outline justice would take more like 15 or so pages. If I assigned a 6 page paper and a student handed in a 15 page paper--especially if it was about as topic that I was not enthusiastic about--I would be peeved. And a peeved instructor is NOT the instructor you want grading your paper. Now, if the instructor won't mind if you hand in a paper that's well over the minimum length, your outline is excellent. But if you have to keep it closer to the minimum, do not be afraid to cut entire topics.

I believe the secret to good writing isn't a secret at all -- it's good editing.

As a university professor, I'll bet you could tell a few good horror stories about that?

Clankeye and Mark have good points. I've found that after working on a paper, what I proposed for a paragraph ends up becoming the entire paper. Your paper looks quite ambitious for the little space you're allowed. Keep up the good work and whittle it down. image

Let me clarify- this is where my teacher is good...

The minimum is 6 pages- she doesn't care how concise you are, it's at least 6 pages.

On the other hand, my teacher firmly understands writing differences- some people like to write as little as they can to explain something well, others write a lot. Therefore, the paper has NO maximum limit- if I turned in a 1300 page paper, it would still be ok. A lot of time to read? Yes, but still acceptable as it is over 6 pages.

I could see your paper easily reaching 80 pages double-spaced. image

Good luck with it. Lucidity and brevity are two keys to remember. As TWODOGS says, "Eschew obfuscation."

And I second (third? fourth?) what Clankeye said.
