Mint Sets

I saw a gorgeous original 1955 mint set today, completely original. These beauties pick up some incredible toning from the sulfer paper they are enclosed in. I just wonder if they are worth the $200 asking price, and if they should be graded and slabbed.

  • I'm not sure of the usual price range of the 55 set, but I just bought a 57 set yesterday and paid very close to that range. IMO yes! they are totally worth it. I think they are extremely under appreciated. They are being cherry picked and broken up more and more. The toning can be fantastic on them... in short, I love them. I wish I could buy evey original 57 set I find. Especially the ones with the original outer and inner mailing envelopes still intact.

  • As to whether they should be graded or slabbed, it's an interesting question. To slab a whole set could cost quite a chunk of change. A lot of the individual coins in the 50's mint sets won't necessarily grade that high as to bring huge premiums. The idea of encapsulating them to arrest the toning process is valid. Certainly if you did have some or all sent out for grading keep all the original packaging.

  • Since Mikey brings it up, I'm curious as to how many of you do have a collecting interest in the 50's mint sets. And if you do, is keeping them intact a priority to you? Or do you like to cherry pick them?

  • I like them a bunch. I have a 57 set also. The jeffs. all have beautiful rainbow toning. the qtrs and halves are toning blue as are the dimes. the cents are brown. I am just holding it to see how much more it will tone. My oter sets from 59 up have occasional pretty toned coins but nothing to send in yet. I also am holding a 55 PF box set that I think would cameo some of the coins. Can't decide whether to certify the whole set or not.image

    Gary--
I had a guy who deals with mint sets a lot tell me that the 57 sets in particular are known to be found with outstanding toning. I have seen a few in person that this is true about. I'd love to see your set. I'm keeping an eye out especially for mint set toned 57 jeffs these days.
