Sniper Etiquette

I have read several posts regarding the behavior and tactics of so-called "snipers" who bid at the last second. I was very surprised to learn that there was actually Sniper Software out there. But one question I haven't seen answered was What do you do if you want to win an auction, but see a forum's members' name as high bidder? I used to bid at the last second, as I thought this was a good way to try and win. Didn't even know it was called "snipping" until last week.
For example, I am interested in a certain coin, and have added it to my Watchlist. I have watched it throughout the final day and am staying up late to bid. Then you recognize a forum members name as high bidder right before you place your bid. Do you still bid? Or do you just call it a loss?

As for some of the other comments, well, some of us on here are true friends and the anything goes attitude ain't always welcome. But, have at it. What goes around comes around: it IS a somewhat limited world in "coin collecting".

It really depends on which forum member it is. If it's Don or Marty, no mercy! Bwuahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

<< <i>Sometimes, if I have found the auction with plenty of time before it ends, I will contact the member and discuss it with them. If they really need it I'll usually back off or we compare what our max bids are and if his is higher so I wouldn't get it anyway I don't bid and just run him up and vice versa. If there isn't enough time for that and I want the item, I bid! >>
same here
Whenever I've been beaten by a sniper I've always suspected that
that he had outside help.Otherwise how could he possilbly place the winning bid consistently with 10 seconds or less left in the auction?

I don't use any "outside help", and I'd be embarassed if I left that much time on the table. Two to four seconds is the goal.
Software is for wussies.

I have had three snipes with 1 second left, including my first. Occasionally this happens because my internet slowed down at the last second, but the basic amount of time left is always intentional and I have never clicked bid with more than 6 seconds left unless I lose track of the time and bid to be sure I am not too late. I only use a program when I am not home so I can still get a good deal.

If Ebay required bidders to "sign up" for an auction at least 30 seconds before the end of the auction, they could fly the Jolly Roger on the auction page. This way, everyone would know that someone was out there lurking and waiting to snipe.
Until then, I'll keep on sniping. It's all in the timing and consistency of your connection. I snipe inside 5 seconds all the time, because I'm afraid of getting sniped.
So do it
Rusty.
Russ shoots for 2-4 seconds? HA! My goal is 1-second snipes. (hard to do though)
It makes it alot more fun.
Is it an online service or loaded on your hard drive software? If it's on your computer, I could see how it is slower.

It worked ok, but they had too many bells and whistles in it - like the Homer Simpson "DOH" when you didn't score. It slowed the application down.
One interesting side effect of doing it manually, is you become quite good at counting down 60 seconds manually.

Glad to see he has not yet put his $.25 in on this thread. That would be more than I could bare!
