Your thoughts on the FUN show....

I was invited to attend the January 2002 FUN show and already have a place to stay if I decide to go. Now, I have never been to the show (or Florida for that matter). What makes it such a great show? Talk me into going. I just have to justify too myself the airplane ticket.

I think the main attraction of the show itself is the fact that it's huge. I have attended FUN for the past 7 or so years and I never cease to marvel at the size. I have never attended a summer ANA show or a Long Beach show, so I can't make a direct comparison--I presume others can do so. However, the FUN show dwarfed last Spring's Jacksonville ANA show.

Another main attraction is the climate, which I think isn't such a drawing card for you because I seem to recall that you are California based. But if you live in, say, Buffalo, a week in Orlando is nothing to sneer about. Additionally, if you have a family, they can attend Disney or Universal while you spend your time more fruitfully...but, again, that isn't a huge attraction for you. However, what might be of significant interest is the fact that Sarasota is very close--you could arrive early or leave late and easily visit NGC if you choose to do so. I guess you could also visit ACG, but I haven't noticed those tendencies in your posts.....

  • Thanks Mark. My main attraction would be the coins. ACG would be the bottom of my list.image Anyone attend Long Beach and FUN? How do they compare?

I like the FUN show better than the ANA shows.
Lot of stuff to do in Florida too.

I'm gonna be there. (The 2003 show, that is. That's what you meant, I'm sure).

See you there, maybe. I'll be the whacko in the Holey Coin Vest. image

    Cameron,

Year, after year, FUN is easily one of the largest, most active and best shows anywhere. I say this as a dealer of 20 plus years who attends most every major show in the country. You should not have to be talked into it - just do it! In fact, if you go and honestly feel that I gave you bad advice, I will refund your airfare (assuming it's reasonable!) and you have my guarantee on record for all to see.image

    Carmeron-

A lot of us non-west-coasters will be there. You be sure to come this year so we can all get together.

I agree with the other comments. The show is huge and lively. There are rumblings afoot to have some other "show down" at FUN as well this year, akin to the great success of the Indian Head collections show down at Long Beach. You won't be sorry!

How about I don't go to the FUN show, but you let me deduct the price of what would be my airfare off any coin in your inventory? Think of the benefit, two things that wouldn't have to be lugged to Florida, me and the coin. I'll make it a big heavy one.

Remember, it is unfair to discriminate against wizened old commemorative collectors and favor young, promising good guy numismatists. Let your conscience be your guide.

  • As others have said, just do it. I live right here in Sunny Orlando, and went to the show a couple of years ago. Man it was huge and their was nothing that couldn't be bought. I had a great time, but I took my brother with me and he got sick. I had to leave after just 4 hours, which wasn't enough time to see half of what was there. I also got to meet some of the folks from PCGS including Rick M. I took some Civil War tokens and Had ANACS give me an estimated grade on the spot. I purchased a nice 1908 S Indian Head Cent and a 1895 $10 Gold Eagle, and got great deals on them. I am really looking forward to going this year to meet a lot of the forum members, so we will definitely have to schedule a time and date to meet up!!!!!image

I'm not a dealer, live in California and I'm still thinking of going. You should without question go!

I was just @ Long Beach and if FUN dwarfs that, it's gotta be amazing.

The local dealers I do a lot of business with say this is the one show to go to. Lots of inventory. It costs me only $250 to fly round trip.

I will be there. Hope to meet some if not all who attend.

    Cameron,

My first year at FUN was this past January! It's a huge show in a great place and city. I've been to several ANA's and Long Beach several times and I'll honestly say I think it's the best overall show!

and what have you got to lose.......nothing! Mark's got you covered! and I even pay half for Mark if you don't have a wonderful time!

    Clankeye,

Good point about the discrimination! How about you do go to the show (so I can say hi in person) and you still get the discount (on any 5 figure coin in our inventory)?image

I've never attended the FUN Show because at that time of the year I'm always trying to ruin a deer's day. However, this year the deer will have the week off while I attend the show and try to pick off a few neat coins instead!image

I do believe it's one of the best shows of the year. The LB shows and the ANA summer shows are good ones as well, but I've not ever heard of a lousy FUN show. Should be interesting.

Not as active going to major shows as I use to. Over the years I have attended about every major show put on, with the exception of Long Beach. I still attend the FUN Show. It is without a doubt year in and year out the best Coin Show I have ever attended. If there is any fresh material coming on the market it will more than likely appear at this show.
If It doesn't have great eye appeal, I don't want it.

Cameron- You may think of Florida as being warm But almost every year for the last five years it has been in the thirties every night during the first week of January in Orlando.
I also recommend Cirque d' soleil at Disney.

    Have Fun
