    hi there!

I could be wrong but I think it might be a copy.
several bucks if that is so.

Welcome to the board! What you have appears to be a copy so I don't know how much it's worth.
  • Counterfeit. If you weigh it, it will be underweight, and this piece exhibits the lack of detail in the hair and eagle seen on nearlly all the cast or spark erosion counterfeits.

Oh, as far as techniques go. There are several. The easiest, but not foolproof, is a specific gravity test. Silver has a very specific value to it. But other combinations of metal have the same value. Another way is through an electron microscope that scans a micron or two under the surface and the spectrograph will reveal the metal content. The mint has always been very close to tolerances on their coins, so weighing the coin to the hundredth of a gram and measuring its attributes and comparing it to mint standards is a good step in authenticating a coin.

I'd like to see the edge. This coin has the look of an electrotype copy.

Steele404, when we say it is a copy we mean it is not an authentic US coin. We mean it was created as a souvenir or to deceive. (there are legitimate fakes as well as devious ones)
  • OOOoooo ... I get it now..

u must be a real pro in this.... to identify it as a copy

    anyways,, thanks a lot

1 of the most common copies, worth about $1 as a novelty.

Here's a real one for comparison. As you can see, your coin is a copy.

I just had dinner. I had a lovely Honey Mustard Chicken breast over a wonderful terriyaki vegetable medley. Well, back to coins........image I'm not a pro by any means and still thought the coin looked funny. I've seen that exact same copy somewhere else before.
