That sounds really nice, Greg. ICG, eh? Any chance that PCGS would have bagged it? I would jump at any Lincoln the way you described it.
Yeah ICG. It won't last very long in that slab. It'll be going into NGC in a few days. I doubt that PCGS/NGC would bag this coin. It looks COMPLETELY original.
I'll try to get a picture that captures the toning. It's very nice.
We then had the pleasure of meeting TDN and seeing his latest world class purchases while visiting with Laura at Legend.
I didn't know TDN would be there. I wondered who the "new guy" was behind their table. I guess that was him. If so he showed me a Deleware in PCGS 66 that was nice. Hopefully he'll be there tomorrow.
Had the pleasure of viewing some super toned coins over at Dave Schweitz' table and if anyone is going tomorrow, ask Dave to show you one of the nicest toned Kennedy Half Dollars in a PCGS holder (a 1964 in PCGS-MS67).
Had a great time at LB - it was the best one I've ever been to! The showdown was outstanding - had dinner with Shylock, Snow and Ira D. Another guy brought his complete collection, so the showdown was really 4 sets, including a couple of complete FE sets! There were monsters everywhere at the PCGS table.
My perception was that there didn't seem to be too many nice FE/IHC's on the floor yet I came home with 5....that's alot more than I usually find so I guess it was a pretty good show afterall. After lunch today Shylock and I came across a pair of bookend 1881's in 65R and we bought both!
Thanks again to BJ and Carol who put in a ton of work. They were extremely gracious to everyone who wanted to see the collections....thanks again!
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose.
Greg - wish you had introduced yourself! That undoubtedly was me, but my preoccupation was on considering a deal at hand. Sorry I didn't chat more.
I bought two coins - a very nice PCGS PF65RB Indian cent from Chris Napolitano and the Eliasberg 1884 trade dollar in NGC PF66. I also got an 1838 pattern half at the Superior auction to go along with my Pittman 38 and Norweb 38-O.
Got to view an 1894-S dime with stunning toning, got to view the Norweb 1893-S in PCGS MS67 at Jack Lee's table and got to hold one of the two (!) Ultra High Reliefs at the Mike's Coin Chest display. WOW!
just got home from a long day at long beach. things were hopping pretty much everywhere i looked. spent a lot of time checking out the heritage auction. where of course all the good stuff kept going for one bid higher than i was willing to go. there was a 21 peace dollar in a pcgs65 slab that had an awesome strike, it went for 2k which was as high as i was going to go, but man o man what a beauty. (kind of wish i'd gone to 2200, oh well, it'll be nice to pay the mortgage on time). i agree that heritage sure does have a great operation, with very friendly and helpful staff. (it's an absolutely great place to sit and look at bunches of mint state coins, with no pressure to buy or move aside for someone else.)
met the very friendly Bryan at his well stocked and well toned TBT table, saw the nice toned items at Dave Schweitz and also suggest for the toning lover checking out Cupertino, they have some very nice coins, in particular an elgin in 66 that had a nice obv. but the rev. was a subtly rainbowish toning that put it right out of my price range, unfortunately. ;-(
picked up a beautiful cobalt blue/ grape merc and a rainbow jeff for my dark toned 40's set. a decent rainbow toned raw au 68' 2 cent, submitted coins to pcgs, ncs and anacs and got out with enough to eat dinner on the way home.
oh yeah, that stuff at mike's coin chest was pretty amazing, ultrahigh relief pf68??!! a pair of em??!! yowee
showdown was impressive and us coins always has some beauties.
finally, amos was giving out free samples of the new coin world slabs, penny size. they are virtually the same size as anacs slabs, with black inserts. it looks like they're going to sell them for 4 or 5 bucks for packages of 3. looks like a pretty good deal to me.
all in all the usual enjoyable day.
hopefully i won't be as scattered in Feb. and i'll meet some more members.
That Kennedy is such a stunner it brought tears to my eyes. It is probably the most beautiful Modern I've ever seen, bar none. It has a soft, yet almost neon look to it with a blend of purples (not that cheap AT junk purple, but the most mystical lavender) I've yet to see.
It's in a display with other magical coins (bottom- in its own row). It is mesmorizing.
I just got back from the LB Show, and even though I didn't find any Morgans I was searching for, I did have a real nice time chatting with all the CU Forum members. Talked at great length with Carol at the PCGS Table, hunted around and found Nucklehead and his girlfriend Jenni, tried to talk with Strat but he's always such a busy guy (I'll see you at the Anaheim Show anyways), then ran into none other then Greg Margulie. Pretty soon we had quite a gathering. Cameron Kiefer (kieferscoins), CarlWohlforth, Gsaguy, Tonekiller, Jom and Barney. I can't tell you how great it was to get together with such a fine group of collectors. It was wonderful to finally meet all of you. On the way out I stopped by Pcgs again to show my daughter what real IHC's look like, (as opposed to to ones I have,) with the three sets they had on display for the "Shoot Out" and as we were trying to look thru the case at them, a gentleman next to us asked one of the young ladies there to open the case for us. Needless to say I was shocked. Turns out it was Mr Brey, the owner of the finest set there. Another numismatic moment.
Went back today and was on a mission, got there late and tried to see as much as possible before everyone packed up.
Actually dragged my wife along and she kinda seemed to enjoy it. I think I did pretty well though. Found a 1973 proof set, cracked out the Ike and brought it over to ANACS for submission. Nice sorta rainbow toned 73 with a DDR. Showed to Michael @ ANACS and he gave me a preliminary estimated grade of 68 heavy cam.
Also found a 76 Lincoln proof in another set that was just beautifully toned with red, magenta, purple, silverish highlights on the reverse, with the obverse being rather clean. Described it to Tonekiller and he actually thought I had a winner, and from him that's quite incouraging. He has just has MONSTER coins.
The only disappointing occurence was a estimated grade Michael gave me on a proof 79 SBA Type II. I thought for sure 69 DCAM - his thoughts only a 68. I'll send to PCGS none-the-less and we'll see what happens. ANACS can be tough though.
Overall, I just want to say how great ANACS and Michael were. As I sat there he provided me estimated grades on at least 7 coins. Apparently, this is a free service they provide at the shows. I also saw several others bring up coins they were about to purchase. This is just incredible. Takes alot of guess work out of it. Anyone else know about this?
I asked about a variety registry from ANACS and Michael indicated that it might be in the works, they just need to get a computer person to work on it.
Great 2nd day, I just wish I could have gotten there earlier to meet everyone else. I really looking forward to my next major show.
I took my camera with me thinking to post some pictures but just before I walked onto the floor, there was a very large sign there stating,"Absolutly no video or camera photography will be allowed" I never took it out of the case. Anyone want to venture a guess on the reason behind that? >>
I'd love to shoot a zillion photos at a Long Beach Show, but yes, they ban all cameras, except for the local TeeVee stations and probably some of the Coin Press, the average schmoo is not allowed to shoot photos inside.. It has more to do with security than anything else.. ("Hey, look what this guy has at table #255.. I'll divert him while you open his case and grab the stuff").. I mean c'mon.. go out the front of the LBCC, turn right, you're on Pine Avenue, drive about a mile and you're in da'hood, one of the poorest sections of town with crack deals going down, tiny houses with bars on the windows, idiots just walking off the curb into oncoming traffic.. guys pushing their whole lives around in shopping carts..
Dealers have been followed out of coin shows and whacked and had their inventory stolen, so security is a really big deal at a show of this size, and there is a lot of it in there, even if it's not obvious rent-a-cops in uniforms.. yer talking maybe a billion dollars worth of stuff in one big room..
Or it might also have something to do with the same reason most Casinos in Vega$ prohibit photography - people want anonymity and privacy, when lots of money is changing hands..
As a local yokel, I try to make the Long Beach Show a couple times a year.. I posted a very long show report on Usenet in Rec.collecting.coins yesterday, and I won't cross-post it here. The highlight of the day for me was getting to hang out with Ira "Iras4" Stein for an hour.. the lowlight was the pounding of the pile drivers in the construction area of a former parking lot across the street from the LBCC..
I only bought one coin, just because I wanted one.. I bought it from Julian Leidman of Maryland because Ira said he's a top notch dealer, and Ira's word is as good as, well, gold to me.. and a lot of other folks..
"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, I won't be laid a hand on.. I don't do these things to other people.. I require the same of them.." - John Wayne, "The Shootist" (1976.. his final film)..
Much to my surprise I returned to the show today. I had been there yesterday to pick up my Heitage Auction lots ( they had been shipped back to Texas) and had left a copy of Brigg's book on LS quarters (that I purchased there) on one of the chairs. I realized it as soon as I returned home but had given it up for lost. At 930 AM I got a call from the Coin show management that they had my book. So I returned to pick it up . Much thanks to the people at the message desk. The bourse floor was abandoned by all but a few dealers and stragglers. Nevertheless, I walked around for a few minutes and bought a copy of Don Taxey's book "The US Mint and Coinage. I also looked at Fletcher's book on Shield Nickels but left it on the shelf for next visit. The show is over until next time.
I had a great time Thur afternoon & Fri, and met quite a few forum members and fellow IH cent collectors I knew only via email, like Tim (Lakesammman). Unfortunately I probably passed many other forum people without a clue who they were. Sorry I missed Nucklehead, if I'd known he was there I'd have looked for that Angels cap.
Met Jom and DMWJR (Doug) at the PCGS booth, and tried to find Elcontador with Joms help, but no luck. He introduced me to Strat & Toningintheblood along the way, both of whom where busy wheeling and dealing. Strat looked exhausted! Jom shared a beautiful bullet toned Buffalo he bought from BigD5, and is as nice a guy as I expected.
I was able to take some images of the PCGS display and the coins themselves thanks to Stewart Blay, BJ and the Expo. They're posted on the Registry board for anyone who's interested. Amazing coins.
I made 5 purchases, including the 'bookend' 1881 IH PCGS MS65RD Lakesammman mentioned. Was wild that this dealer had two PQ coins from the same tougher date.
Re: Cameras at the Show. I returned Saturday, without my camera, only to find people shooting pics wherever they wanted. One group took 5 to 8 right in front of the BEP display with the reps standing by, watching, and not saying a word. Go figure. Also...
<< <i>Or it might also have something to do with the same reason most Casinos in Vega$ prohibit photography - people want anonymity and privacy, when lots of money is changing hands.. >>
Casinos stopped banning cameras years ago. I can shoot wherever and whatever I want in a casino. I've seen signs that even encourage photography inside. But I can see why they would ban it at the show. Now if they would enforce it.
Hrlaser, Many if not all Vegas casinos do allow still photography. No video.
According to LBCC press official, photography is not allow per the request of the organizer. They feel if someone "sees" images then there is no point in going to see the show. Makes no sense to me but that's why after a big fight they can't show even a 10 second clip, maybe one still. Promoters like to keep things mysterious to encourage curiosity.
I say allow stills and it can act as promo material.
As far as the security aspect. Any dealer or auctioneer with a shop with public access is a target. It does not matter if they are in a convention center, Beverly Hills or back home in Littletown. Personally, I feel dealers should fear other dealers as they are the ones who know the ins and outs of security. Just like in a large retail store most of the theft occurs on the loading dock, warehouse and floor by.....employees!
Really bummed I missed Shylock as I went Thurs.and Sat.all day.Did meet on Sat. Jom,Greg Margulies,Barney,Cameron Kiefer,GSAguy,Tonekiller, all super nice people. If I missed anyone please remind me as I'm better with faces than names..
Friends are Gods way of apologizing for your relatives.
It was good to meet some forum members at the show such as Shylock, knucklehead, Mr. Lee, Barney, El Contador. It's too bad that El C and Shylock missed each other. I found El C just after Shylock "left the building" on Friday D'oh! Oh well, maybe next time.
I did get to meet BJ at the PCGS booth on Friday with Shylock. BJ told me she was a wholesaler for David Hall from about 1977 to 1987. She quit to do other things only to return recently to help out at PCGS. She actually helped Hall to start PCGS in 1986. Then on Saturday I was at one of the book sellers in the back of the floor and found an old book Hall wrote way back in 1987. Guess who was on the cover of this book with Hall? BJ. Too weird.
The best part of the show was meeting so many of you! I especially enjoyed the group with MrLee, nucklehead, gmarguli, Barney, Jom and more. If I started to mention everybody (like BJ, Carol and all the PCGS folks), tonekiller, GSAGuy there would surely be some I forget. Cameron Kiefer was very nice and helpful (thanks for the NGC sample slab!).
But there were many of you there that I didn't get a chance to talk to. Maybe next time...
I only sold one coin and bought three. I bought holey coins for my hat the best being a bust dime. But I came away with lots of learning.
The most awesome display was Mike Bobb's by far. Everybody sees one or another unique coin, gets totally awed them moves on. They miss the other dozen unique coins! He had a display of 1907 proof gold including 2 extra high relief saints and a rolled edge Indian $10. He had, I'm guessing here, 40 proof sets all different years, all including all denominations including gold. Most all of them highest grade PCGS coins. The newest was 1914. Totally awesome. I really, truely love matte proof $10 Indians. The Stella was nice. I could go on....
edited to say: I guess the Indian Head Cents were pretty awesome too! It is just that I am a proof guy. No offence to the copper gang, I was truely awed by the showdown.
What a great place! Have been four times now and it's without a doubt one of the best shows on the circuit! Talked with many board members thurs-sat some I have met before, some new. As usual Larry (PQPeace) and I wore out another pair of shoes.....looking at every Morgan and Peace dollar in the place! A special thanks to Larry and his family for allowing me to stay with them a few days!
Had a nice conversation with coinguy (Mark Feld) of Pinnacle, who had a very nice group of Peace dollars, of which I picked up a very nice 23-d in 66 with beautiful antique copper toning scattered along the rims! It appears all my nice comments about Pinnacle finally paid off as Mark and Kathleen gave me a great deal on this beauty! Made the trip worth it!
We spent several hours at Heritage checking out the Signature and Bullet sales. A great group of people working the auctions.....no hurries, pressures, just sit a look at as many lots as you want. You can't find a better education anywhere!
Oh Braddick.....GSAGUY showed me the Kennedy also......monster, killer, etc......call it what you want......JUST STUNNING!
What a great way to spend the weekend......except for the flight home! That's a killer!
Have you ever found a 1909 S VDB in your change? My exwife did, I thought she found it in the back yard of a house shes renting, dont know why! She is a waitress and decided to look at some wheat cents she has collected over the years. Well, she found one and we showed it to Micheal at ANACS because I figured PCGS would BB it because of scratches. He said it has fine detail but would grade it VG because of the scratches. Her luck is better than mine, the 64L IH I just bought was dipped and of the wrong color(lots of luster though), I dont see any difference between mine and some of the dipped IHs in the SHOWDOWN!
You can fool man but you can't fool God! He knows why you do what you do!

Okay, next time you're in Vega$, please go to Caesars with your camera, and find the high limit area and shoot a couple dozen photos of the high rollers playing blackjack or baccarat or Roulette with $100, $500, and $1000 chips.. let me know where you've uploaded the photos..
Some casinos actually enourage people to shoot pictures, like Excalibur, which likes to pretend it's a "Family" place.. but I have seen plenty of casino security guys in uniform at other places tell people to cap their lens and put their camera away, and saw one guy physically removed from the Mirage when he was shooting photos of people at blackjack tables..
I'm not saying all casinos ban cameras, they don't.. but I wouldn't make a blanket statement that one could shoot wherever and whatever you want in a casino.. either.. like everything else, some ban it completely, some allow it here and there, some actually encourage it..
I never bring my camera to the Long Beach Show despite it being one of the ultimate photo ops for coins and currency simply because they told me over the phone "No." and you saw that big sign at the top of the escalators that said "No" I'm sure..

You're absolutely right hrlaser. I shouldn't have said it quite that way. I should have said I've shot pictures wherever I've wanted too. I don't take pics of people I don't know, just family and friends. I wouldn't think of taking pics at the high-roller tables (being I wouldn't know anyone there) anymore then in the women's restroom. I've never wanted pics of people in the casinos I don't know so I haven't pushed the envelope to find out. There's only a dozen casinos in Vegas I go to so there might still be some out there that forbid photography, I just haven't seen one in twenty years. Thanks for pointing that out. Lee
It was great meeting everybody at the show. I wish I had more time to talk longer but it was fun. Next time, I want to come for at least two days to soak in more things. Greg was a great guy, and don't let his icon fool you.
The Bowers coin was a rare Canadian AU that was expensive. I can't remember what compelled me to bid on it but it was not my type of coin. I hope it is received well and can ultimately go into a collection of someone more appreciative of its merits. Incidentally, I no longer buy coins sight unseen ( God, can I keep thios promise)
I'd be interested in hearing more about this coin.
If I hadn't just got back from a 2 1/2 week vacation I'd have gone down to see everyone. I'll be there next weekend for another convention, though. Anyone going to the League of California Cities Expo?

Next time, hopefully, those freakin' pile drivers they had pounding in foundation support beams across the street where they're building some ritzy new shopping plaza will be done doing their job.. I don't know how the people working in the lobby or the parking lot could stand there all day and listen to that pounding.. I would've lost my mind..
By the way, that couple acres of dirt they're working on which used to be the LBCC's overflow parking lot was, years earlier, the site of the famous Long Beach Pike Amusement Park.. This new shopping thing they're putting in there is going to be named The Pike.. what a joke.. imagine if they scraped Disneyland clean and put up a mall and called it Disneyland..
Well, then again, the United States Mint makes a coin out of base metals and calls it "The Golden Dollar".. and there is a pretty good percentage of the population who thinks the thing actually has gold in it.. Carry one around in your pocket for a few months and watch as it turns from nice shiny yellow to a brown that resembles something a dog would leave on your lawn..

On Friday, I got off a flight from São Paulo, Brasil, dumped everything at home & headed to Long Beach. I had the pleasure of meeting Jom (he showed me a beautiful buff he got from Big D) and Toning in the Blood. I also waved at Strat and Mike Printz, who were busy when I saw them & when I got back to their tables, they had gone adios. The only regret was that Shylock and I missed each other by 5 minutes.
I want to publically thank Truth for looking at a few Heritage lots for me when I was in Brasil. On his advice, I bid strong $ for a MS 66 Liberty Nickel. For only the second time at an auction, I got very lucky. Not only did I pick up a beautiful coin, but I got it for 20% under my max bid. Some dealers wanted to buy it & I could have made $ if I wanted to sell it then & there.
I like Long Beach, because I know a number of the dealers, and if they aren't too busy, they'll show me something I'd appreciate, even though they won't be making a sale. Frank at Delaware Valley Coins showed me the only slabbed PF 69 Liberty Nickel (it was CAM but not so designated on the holder). David Weygandt showed me a beautiful 1829 Capped Bust Half in NGC 65 which was one of the nicest of that series I have seen.
Said hello to Carol @ Kingwood & spoke with Gordon Wrubel over there as well.
Noticed the usual suspects - lots of nice toned Morgans, T Cline with his second to none display of SLQs, the dealer with the excellent display of 3 Cent Nickels, etc. I am noticing more high end Braided Hair Large Cents availale now. Plenty of high end Seated & Barber material to choose from.
I did find a few MS 64 small dentil capped bust quarters, but none "had my name on it." I finally did find a Braided Hair Half Cent in MS 65 RB, but passed on it, as it was not nice for the grade.
I found it interesting that although I was in transit from Brasil for 20 hours, I was still raring to go when I arrived in Los Angeles. Glad I went...
"Vou invadir o Nordeste, "Seu cabra da peste, "Sou Mangueira......."
Long Beach was great as always. Steve (rkfish) and I looked at over 400 silver dollars in the auctions, and just about every other one on the floor. I bought 13 coins,so I better thin out my collection and sell a few. I may just give up on my pl and dmpl set and sell them. I just can't hang with the big boys putting together multiple sets . Bought 2 nice morgans from Legend. One from Pinnacle, and 1 from Jack Lee to name a few. I will write up a real recap as soon as my brain functions again.
Next show will be Santa Clara, then FUN.
more later after work, Larry

Did anyone see decent trade dollars for under $1,500? I've only been to a few Long Beach shows, but every trade dollar I saw in that range was terribly hairlined and recently dipped. I have yet to find a decent AU trade dollar at one of the shows.
Did anyone see decent trade dollars for under $1,500?
TDN bought an 1884 in NGC PR66. I don't know what he paid. It might have been a little more than $1500. You'll have to ask him. Good news is that he might want to sell his duplicate.
There was one dealer that had a case full of raw ones. I only looked for a few seconds on Sunday. Most looked VF-AU.
Funny how it works when a classic rarity comes along. There were people down the whole grading spectrum waiting for that coin to break loose. I bought the 66 trading in my 65, Jack Lee bought my 65 trading in his 63, and I imagine the 63 is sold already.
But if there's a 61 that got traded in on the 63, he'd have to think twice about your offer!
The Eliasberg 1884 has been on my mind for almost 6 years now. We bid on it in the sale and we were offered it right after the sale but passed on price. But not a day has gone by since that I haven't imagined owning it. Today I took it to the vault and for the very first time held the 84 and the 85 next to each other. It was quite a thrill! I can't imagine that owning any other coin could bring me so much satisfaction!
Yes, It was the Norweb.....It was a neat thrill for me to be able to hold and inspect the two coins(much less the thought of owning just one of them). Will probably be a long time before I see the likes of those two again but it's nice to be able to put your "eyes" on them.....just once! A special thanks to Jack Lee for sharing both truely special coins!
Just got back from CA (Long Beach and Catalina) and had a great time. I DID get some pictures from the show (with permission, a couple pics of Indians in the PCGS Showdown, some Bust Dollars and an MS-68 toned Morgan); I'll post them in a couple days. Also picked up a nice Fugio, met the TexasBullionTraders guy (nice coins). Should have more to blab about later, just got home and want to crawl into bed, since work awaits tomorrow.
<< <i>Today I took it to the vault and for the very first time held the 84 and the 85 next to each other. >>
*Fzzzt* *crackle* *BOOM* That blows my mind! Wow!
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

<< <i>Somebody please take some pictures!! >>
Picture of the coin I bought.. well duh..

Casinos stopped banning cameras years ago. I can shoot wherever and whatever I want in a casino. I've seen signs that even encourage photography inside. But I can see why they would ban it at the show. Now if they would enforce it.
Many if not all Vegas casinos do allow still photography.
BJ. Too weird.

Lee

"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
Next show will be Santa Clara, then FUN.
more later after work,

TDN bought an 1884 in NGC PR66. I don't know what he paid. It might have been a little more than $1500. You'll have to ask him. Good news is that he might want to sell his duplicate.
There was one dealer that had a case full of raw ones. I only looked for a few seconds on Sunday. Most looked VF-AU.

But if there's a 61 that got traded in on the 63, he'd have to think twice about your offer!
Jack Lee showed us (Larry and myself) the 65....it was a beauty! Hard to imagine improving on that one! That 66 must be a killer coin!
Also got to see the 93-s Morgan Jack Lee had in PCGS 67! A remarkably clean, lightly toned speciman.

I believe that was the Norweb 93-S. A super coin!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
