1918 quarter

I am not very familiar with these coins but I know they are notorious for weak strikes in the early type two varieties. Any idea on a grade? sorry the reverse picture is a little fuzzy. Mike

      • Mike - doesn't look like an FH coin and it looks like it's got some wear on the rims and on the eagle's breast and wing so I'm going MS50-55.

Cam40- I think the 8 over 7 is only on the S mint coin?
      • Yes, it is a weak strike. Some SLQ have weak dates on even uncirculated coins. That problem was fixed in the type III starting in 1925. The first guy Frank told you right, it is an AU coin. The 8 over 7 is only on the 1918-S so this is a regular 1918.

        Mike,

If you want a nice one, I suggest a 17 P Type I, or a 29 or 30 P, as they tend to be the best struck coins of the series. You could pick up an MS 63 FH of any date inexpensively.

I'd say this coin is really nice AU, probalby an AU-55. You might get as high as an AU-58 on it, but that would be pushing it IMO. I really like the fact that it has not been cleaned white. It's a better than average strike although it never had a full head. Full heads can be found on AU-58 Standing Lib quarters, and they have been certified as such.

The first place I look for wear is the liberty's right (on the left) leg. I don't see any wear on the leg but it might just be the scan....usually it has a flatness to it.

EDIT: But looking at the reverse the top part of the wing on the eagle looks worn....

      • I would grade it an EF40. The rim and eagles wings especially show wear.
I have an 1918-S (albeit it is an ACG coin) up for auction right now ..SLQ 1918-S .

        HI danreller,

If you think you are going to get a coin that looks like this for EF money, you are going to be in for a shock. There's lots of detail and there is mint luster in the fields. Most EF graded coins are going to look like VFs to you.

The Standing Liberty quarter is one of the tougherst items grade because of the strike and wear pattern problems.

      • Looks like an AU overall. They do typically have a weak strike, I have a MS66FH that has some weakness in the toes and 3 shield rivets but has a strong date.

But like Elcontador said the 1917 Type 1 are usually found fully struck

Thanks guy's I was thinking XF but it seemed like it had too much luster for XF. I do have a couple of these in ms66 in the type 3 variety and they sure are nice too look at.image mike
