Speaking of Connecticut commems . .Received results today!

How many points will this one lose due to the marks on the eagle"s left leg and elsewhere?

(assume the photo is unflattering --- it is a reasonably nice coin, absent those nicks)

I would guess the coin would be a max of 63 with all those marks on the back.

Actually, the photo is about as unflattering as possible -- and the obverse is quite nice.

    I got the results today --- MS65 !

The Connecticut is graded heavily on the eagle much as the bear on the Bay Bridge and the same for the Bridgeport. A couple of small tics could make a 63 out of an otherwise strong 65 coin regardless of how nice the obverse is.

    Very good.
So if I may ask... you bought the coin raw, correct? What grade did you purchase it at raw? Did you buy it as a 65? Or did you grade it lower and get it at those levels?
I'd love to see the obverse. Based on the photo (and yes, I know about grading from photos) I probably would have been conservatively thinking that the coin would grade 64, if I were buying it raw. That is just because with my experiences with the grading companies and commems, a coin with a few ticks like that can go either way. Did you send it to PCGS, or to NGC?
    At any rate, good job.

Clankeye -- sorry for the delay in response!

I bought this coin raw over the counter at Stack's 24 years ago -- at the time they described the coin as "choice".

The obverse is quite nice, and in spite of the marks on the reverse, I would have called it a PQ 64, so I was a little surprised when PCGS returned it as 65. (I've had a fair share go in the other direction, as well!)

    Here is the obverse:

I would have said MS-64 with a shot at MS-65. The coin appears to undipped, and that probably put it over the top.

I have a PCGS MS-65 in stock with fewer marks. It's not been dipped, but its luster is on the gray side.

    Higashiyama---
I would agree with your assessment of a 64+. And by that I mean that I think on any given day at PCGS it could have come back a 65 or a 64. It's a nice coin, by the look of the photos. I think it's great that you kept it this long. And I think Stack's sold it to you with an accurate grade for the time.
