Which of these two buffs do you like better?

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,148 ✭✭✭✭✭
These are the two from which I will choose...

#1- essentially mark free and has nice luster
image

#2- Luster is slightly better... no mark above 9, however there is a mark under the chin (which the scan shows)
image

Disregard cost. If you think one is nicer than the other, please tell me why image The perfect coin is: lustrous, white and/or light gold (looks like both fit). They both seem to have strong strikes, but I think #2 is stronger... right?

Thanks for your help,

Jeremy

Is it just the picture or is the date on No. 1 doubled? I love DDOs. But the Indian looks more relaxed and asleep on No. 2 and the buffalo's eyes in No. 2 look really crazy - I have a soft spot for sleepy faces and crazy-eyed wild animals (like my wife). image

So No. 1 if it is DDO, otherwise No. 2 for the sleepy face obverse and crazy eyes reverse.

Tough choice, they're both attractive. I think I like coin number one better since it has what looks like a nicer bison on the reverse and both sides have a more satiny feel and a less chrome-like feel. Also, coin number two seems to have a hit in the field just below the bison's head that I don't like very much. It's really impossible to tell from a scan but that is my opinion.

    Tom,
If you read what I wrote, you would know that the hit really is there image These are the descriptions I was given with the scans.

  • Go for whichever one is the D/S. image

I'm with TomB. I like number 1 better, but I probably would be happy with either.

I would go with #1. The luster on number two is very nice, but I would go with #1 because it is mark free... and the date seems to be struck better than the latter pic.

Well, I did read what you wrote but assumed that when you wrote "chin" that you meant the Native American's chin.

  • I have to concur with the current consensus. I think the strike on the first coin looks stronger and the fields look better. I vote for number one.

I was also looking under the chin of the indian.#1 for the reasons stated.Al

I like #2 a bit better because of the toning shades on the reverse. Both have surprisingly weak strikes for a 38-D however. Since it's a common date I'd probably keep searching.

Without looking at the others comments, I would prefer the top coin. I think the Buffalo is struck a bit fuller. Mark.

  • Indian seems week on #1. Buff seems week on #2. Same story regarding luster vs. marks. It's kind of a six of one, half-dozen of the other situation. Forced to choose, #1 wins on a pure eye appeal tie-breaker--today. I could switch tomorrow, though.image

After careful examination of both coins, the choice is simple. Buy both. Both are gorgeous, spare
yourself the headache. This may explain why I have duplicates in my collection.

I agree with berylcoin. I also like coin #1 reverse (sharper struck) and coin #2 obverse.

Note that coin #1 obverse is significantly weaker struck but has pleasant luster.
