That 1837 $5 faulty/clean is doing pretty well... up to $770 right now.

Fantastic story teller! Its all I can do to keep from writing checks to her just to keep the stories coming. She is great!
I don't care whether the stories are natural or artificial stories (AS) - they are works up art.
I hope she tells us more about Harold in the future!
This seller is an inspiration.
Would it surprise you if I said I had proof "she" is really a "he" and that her story is bunk?
Exhibit A:
Does this coin look familiar? Look at the eBay auction for "four great old coins" that HoosierDaddy linked in the first post. Sure, it's been doctored a bit, but it's the exact same one "Deb" said came from old Harold's estate. Now how could it be that goose3 just sold the coin back in April and Harold has been dead for a year or more?
Unless Harold is collecting from beyond the grave, this is proof positive that there is no old collection from a deceased husband being sold by his widow. "Deb" is a guy with cunning marketing ability who goes around and buys coins at shows, then sells them as if they came from an old collection.
I'm sure someone will e-mail him... I mean "her" and ask for an explanation, and I'm sure it will be a doozy!

Yes,
Shirohniichan is most likely right, she/he is probably AS. But the stories are great!
Just wish we would hear more about Harold. How did he die? Where did he keep his coins? Was she a coin widow? Was theirs a geat and passionate love?
What would be perfect for eBay is some one with her/his story telling ability selling some fabulous AT coins (AT + AS = ?).
you and skylock should be appointed the boards coin cops
I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.
Always looking for nice type coins
my local dealer
And unless Deb, has set up a bank account using a woman's name, then she is definitelt a "she". Because "Deborah" was the name I had to make a personal check out to when I won a few of her auctions a while back.
-Dan
You have to give her/him credit, she/he even admits that something about this auction smells.
<< <i>
One thing we did discover was a shipping carton full of proof sets, which we did not realize was part of Harold's collection. This box is huge, and was obviously stored in the basement at our old house for quite a few years, because, to be quite honest with you, it has a somewhat musty odor due to the moisture and mildew on it. There is nothing but proof sets in it, probably about 300 or more all together, from many different years and in original packaging (I think), and I do apologize that these original packages also have a slight basement odor (our old basement was never 100% dry). I have been trying to air these out for several weeks, but it has only helped a little. Please keep this in mind if you decide to bid on them. I plan to sell them off in large lots, since they take up alot of space and are quite heavy. >>
<< <i>and the conclusion is that she is truly on the up-and-up >>
who in heck concluded that???
ok, i have to admit that i bought some coins from her a while back, was pleased with them, but i've personally come to the conclusion that something's amiss. ie., i find myself in agreement with Russ. BTW i haven't bid on anymore of "her" auctions either.
K S
<< <i>and the conclusion is that she is truly on the up-and-up >>
I guess that would depend on one's definition of "up-and-up". From what I understand, "she" delivers the coins as promised, and "she" isn't ripping anybody off. So, I guess, in that sense "she" is on the up-and-up.
But, "her" story is the biggest bucket of crap on eBay.
Russ, NCNE
"she" didn't read the thread and pull the items, did "she."
I do not know what just happened! She had 15 or so items out for bid with the 1st ending this AM - Now there is nothing? Strange!
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
FACT1: there were 19 auctions by "deb", not 15
FACT2: none of deb's auctions ended early. i doubt that "she" reads the forum. even if she did, considering how much $ she makes when snipers attack her items in the last 4 seconds, she would be stupid to end them early. i checked the ending time of every auction, and they all went for exactly 5 days, down to the second.
FACT3: i can tell you both bust dollars pic'd are the exact same die variety and die state, & i believe they are the same coin, though i do NOT have PROOF.
PROBABLE FACT4: as stated, both coins are likely the same identical coin IMO, BUT it is POSSIBLE that they are both die-struck counterfeits, which would give them both the same characteristics. that said, the diagnostics are correct for these being authentic coins
PROBABLE FACT5: "deb" really is a "she"
now, i don't know who "goose3" is, but what really needs to happen is very simple. apparently, "shirohniichan" does know this "goose3", so all you gotta do is find out who the he11 "goose3" sold that bust dollar to and the inescapable conclusion is that same person is "deb"!!!
i'd like to believe "deb" is real, since i bought a couple nice coins from old bag for chrissake. it sounds as if "petescorner" and i are the only ones who ever bought from her, so i pose these 2 questions:
Q1: has anyone else on the forum ever purchased from "deb"??? be honest now, nothing to be ashamed of if you have. even if it was under a different handle.
Q2: is there a DELICATE way to pose the question to deb: "how could this coin be in your husband's estate if we know it was owned by somebody else 6 months ago". possibility: "deb, i owned this bust dollar in may of this year. how did it come into your husband's estate?"
(PROBABLY ABSURD) QUESTION 3: is it possible that this "goose3" person him/herself is actually deb???

I think I'll just enjoy the story. I don't really care if the coins where clenched in Harold's dying hands or picked up at a local coin show.
At least the lady is providing some entertainment (Yes, added value) to her auctions.
If you like the coins, buy them, if not, then don't. With all the real scams running on eBay, I personally laud her for adding some interest to her sales. Its not like she is claiming they were collected by Elvis Presley or Princess Diana, just poor old, dead Harold (besides, she even warns us that some of them don't smell too good - appreciate the warning, Deb).
Right on (and write on) Deb, tell us more about poor Harold.
Check out the proof!
Maybe the seller is a woman or is using a woman's account. What I do know is that goose3 (who is a regular board member) offered this coin to me in April or May. I wanted it for my collection of chopmarked coins as an example of an old coin with a simple test mark (that's what the gouge on the reverse is). If goose3 sold the coin to someone at a show a few months ago and it turns up in a long-deceased person's estate, there is obviously something wrong. What we have here is a guy going around buying cleaned coins, doctoring them to make them look like they haven't been touched in ages, and hoping for higher bids by using sob stories.
The bottom line is that the seller is using deceptive practices. He may be a quick shipper or even sell coins at decent prices, but his advertising is fraudulent.
Obscurum per obscurius
It is an interesting story though........and apparently it works. Anyone email this seller to find out the true poop?
<< <i>Well, I learned from my son, Clifford, that one of the winners in my last round of auctions turned out to be a dishonest bidder! He refused to pay on the items he won from me, and told us a false story about personal problems >>
Oh, the irony!

Time for a new husband - or boyfriend. But then I would miss the stories about Harold.
Would be interesting to see a picture of his grave - we could send flowers.
Right up there with the Binion slabbed coins I'd like to see some "Harolds". Maybe the folks on this thread would be a little less skeptical then? Or at least focus their energies on some of the real crooks on eBay instead of persecuting some poor, elderly, helpless widow lady just trying to make a few dollars to buy food and pay the rent.
What next, do we go after orphans who are trying to get by selling pencils on the streets ?
Time to go back to reading Charles Dickens.
i do not apprecaite or trust someone who lies i will sometimes do business with them if i get something on approval shipping both ways at their cost
sincerely michael
<< <i>There are only about four large boxes left after this, plus several albums and a few odds and ends. Clifford said he might sell off a couple of the coins he had been keeping, but I'm not sure if he really wants to do that. >>
Ooh, this seller is slick. What do you want to bet that, after the boxes, albums and odds and ends are sold and the supply is exhausted - AGAIN - good old son "Clifford" decides to go ahead and sell his "couple of coins"?
Russ, NCNE
that IS the coin I sold at Central States to a dealer. I think their name was JADE COIN or something like that.
They DO have a website if someone can find it.
He did give me great money for it and was a very nice receptive dealer.
I am curious now if this seller is Jade Coin or if someone bought from him!!!!!!!!!
now this is a VERY interesting thread!
Thanksgiving National Battlefield Coin Show is November 29-30, 2024 at the Eisenhower Allstar Sportsplex, Gettysburg, PA. Tables are available. WWW.AmericasCoinShows.com
Many mothers would love to have a son like Clifford, who takes an interest in Mom, and protects her from those nasty buyers who bid and then don't pay. I suppose next we'll be calling Clifford a scoundral and charleton. Poor, departed Harold must be turning in his grave, his wilted, decaying fingers hitting that electronic keyboard in the sky, watching all the cruel, mean, slandarous messages posted on this forum.
The sadness of this story drives me to tears. Will poor Deb (or is it Jade?) ever be allowed to sell poor Harold's legacy in peace?
Is Clifford really operating JADE Coin on the side without Mom's knowledge? Should we inform Deb of this possible betrayal by Cliff?
Ah, the next story should be even better.
Will the coin police drag poor Deb off to prison, while the evil Clifford turns JADE Coin into another ENRON?
I can't beleive I missed out on the "OLD Lady seated coins"!
I love this story!

Dabigkahuna
And not to say Deb is legit or not, but I still believe she is not acting like a true scammer, yet. Offering free insured shipping, providing close up high res images, etc. Perhaps she is building a following, and Cliff's coins are going to turn out to be 1804 Dollars! I guess we'll find out soon enough.
-Dan
1st, she asked me how my dog was doing. i don't have a dog (???) and have never mentioned such a thing to her! then, she apologized and said that "I must admit, Karl, that the final lot of four coins indeed were not from Harold's estate" (no kidding) blah blah, and that they actually belonged to a dealer in DETROIT. "Cliff" allegedly is friends with this dealer and goes to detroit about once a month on business. he told the dealer/friend how well ebay was going, & the dealer asked her to list the dollar with her coins. "deb" rambled on to say that she had not intended for the listing to mislead readers into thinking that it was H's coin, but that in retrospect, she wishes she would have mentioned they it was not actually from his estate. she also claims it was the first time she's listed a coin other than Harold's.
it was a wordy letter, but i think that's the gist of it. good luck proving or disproving this story. if anyone must see the letter, i guess i could post it, but don't know if that violates some sort of privacy rules.
K S
Kudos to Shiroh and goose3! The people here are like the NCIC of coins - just post a picture and someone probably can positively ID it.
<< <i>It was a wordy letter >>
Of that, I have no doubt!
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
I just knew he... I mean, "she" would come up with a great response. I thought it woud be something more creative.
Here's what he... I mean, "she" should write next time:
"My dear departed Harold had another 1795 dollar gouged and scratched to look just like this coin so he could give it to his brother, who was dying of tuberculosis at the time. You see, they had to split their father's coin collection when their dear mother went into a nursing facility 30 years ago. Joshua, Harold's brother, wanted that 1795 dollar in the worst way, but his father had promised it to him. And since dear Harold couldn't possibly part with the coin his dear old dad had saved especially for him, we went to a dealer and bought an uncirculated one with our life's savings, had it ground down, gouged and scratched, just so he could give it to Joshua on his death bed. That's the wonderful sort of person my dear Harold was. If Harold wouldn't have bought that coin and used up our life's savings, I wouldn't have to be selling the rest of his coins to supplement my food stamps right now. By the way, did I tell you about the squirrels that are nesting in the trees by my new apartment? Land sakes alive, if they aren't the funniest creatures! I was just sipping some home-brewed ice tea the other day and... [insert 4 pages of drivel here]"
Obscurum per obscurius
See, I knew it all along - Clifford betrayed Deb!
<< <i>but her answer was possible & plausible and could potentially blow a hole in shiro's theory. >>
You're kidding, right? "Her" answer doesn't blow a hole in anything, it just blows. "She" made that crap up just like "she" has made up the entire dead husband infinite magical supply of coins yarn.
Russ, NCNE
So, how's your dog doing, Russ?
Obscurum per obscurius
Given the value placed on drivel on the open forum, I think you ought to invite her to post their. Perhaps she can drive TJ and everyone else out of that forum and back to earning an honest living.
Mark
If this seller is not the person or company I sold it to. It IS someone that bought the coin from them. I cannot remember what I sold it for but I don't think it left alot of room for a large profit.
Shiroh, if you can remember the price go ahead and post it.
I do remember that the dealer had commented he was planning on doing something to it to tone down the harsh cleaning.
anyone find that website????????????????????????? I haven't had time to look.
Shiroh, a drivel machine.......that would be quite the useful invention for the open forum. Better patent that. wait, ask LW how to patent it.
I thought $625 was a bit high for the coin, but, then again, I wasn't planning on "de-cleaning" it and offering it on eBay as part of an estate hoax.

Just my two cents.
(both)@earlyUScoins.com?? And what is Deb's ebay id? earlycoins
Man, I wish I still had the email with the PO Box I had to send payment to. I'm begininng to think it may be the same as one of the PO Boxes on the jade website. If no one else confirms this by tomorrow, I'll be able to ask another one of Deb's previous buyers (my Dad) if he still has that address.
-Dan
<< <i>Man, I wish I still had the email with the PO Box I had to send payment to. >>
If the auction you won is still available, try clicking on the seller's name. That should give you, as the winning bidder, their email address. That might tell you something.
Petescorner. Where did you see the email address for jade coins? All I found was these:
On the Internet:
The net is always open! Please email
jadecoin@excite.com
dennist@product-des.com
jade_cc@excite.com
Did I miss a page?
Mr.Lee, I'm pretty sure I remember her email address (I already PMed it to Goose.) But I deleted the End Of Auction email she sent me back in June that had her address where I sent payment to. I know it was a PO Box in Michigan, but now I'm wondering if it wasn't the same as the Michigan PO Box listed on the Jade Coin web site. I'm pretty sure I can confirm it tomorrow afternoon, if no one else gets it by then.
