GTG 1931-S Buffalo

...and taking the opportunity to share images taken by our own Crazyhoundog this Fall. This piece represents what I feel is an eye appeal upgrade over the piece I've owned since 2007. I was actually rather happy with that piece. Over the past several years I passively looked for something that would more closely match how my set had evolved over the years. MS examples abound even though this is the 2nd lowest mintage in the series. I always find the 'story' on the price of these such a great example of rarity of survivors, with the price tag dwarfed by pieces with much higher mintages but much lower surviving MS pieces.

Regardless of the availability, it did take a fair amount of time to find one to displace the incumbent. This coin in particular had super nice color on the obverse with attractive highlights on the reverse as well. Luster is delicious. Take a look a give a stab at the grade!

Great coin and very great photo, Joe. At least a + whether 65 or 66. Joe has the eye for buff color.

My first thought was 66. There are some marks on the neck and hidden in the hair but this is a clean coin with plus toning and luster.

My first thought was a strong 65, but I suspect it is a 66 as I am often low on these. Lovely look, lovely color, great upgrade!

I like it at 65 due to the softness of the central obverse. Beautiful coin, though, and one of my favorite dates and mint.

Everyone is partially correct! I purchased the coin NGC65. Amazingly it was 'priced right' as a BIN at what I'd call average auction price. I've been around long enough to know that it wouldn't sit for long. The coin was always destined for a PCGS holder. While I'm usually relatively risk adverse and prefer to send toned pieces for cross vs cracking out, I felt this piece had a good shot at a PCGS upgrade (one of those pieces where NGC and PCGS weigh different qualities differently). Sure enough PCGS saw it as a 66.

Here are NGC and PCGS interpretations of the coin. I feel Joe's is by far the most accurate

Joe can certainly capture the bluing in your Buff. I have a 1930 that he photographed with nearly the same blue, an NGC MS65. Great coin, deserves a + my opinion.

Well at least I can still grade Buffalos. A lot more accurately than the series I now collect...
Great coin - is that a strike through by the upper lip?

Without seeing the previous post, I would have guessed 66
