1808 Capped Bust Half Dollar-genuine or counterfeit?

jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,801 ✭✭✭✭✭

Not truly familiar with this series. Is this a cleaned genuine capped bust half and if so, is it an 1808/7? Truly appreciate any help.

It looks genuine to me, though with cleaning and/or scratches on the reverse.

Looks genuine to me as well... but either harshly cleaned or cleaned/scratched.

I would say genuine, but harshy cleaned.

Thank you, aware of harsh cleaning, just concerned with authenticity.

I used to own an 1808 half dollar, but I sold it years ago. Here's its sister, and 1807 which you can use to compare your coin.

Generally, masterful counterfeits for the Capped Bust half dollar series are rarely to never seen. Although recent months have shown more with the growing availability of foreign producers selling on Ebay. Poor quality counterfeits are much more common.

This is one of the big reasons why I primarily collect this series. If you purchase a raw Capped Bust half dollar, you can be fairly certain it will be genuine if you hold only a little knowledge. Trade dollar collectors, on the other hand, need to proceed with more caution when purchasing raw coins for their collection, as convincing counterfeits are rampant.

Is it an 1808/7 bust half (Overton 101)? I think it's difficult to identify from a photo, especially on a worn example.

Distinctive die cracks might help attribute it. Depends on the die state...

101.1 -- The earliest die state shows no die cracks.
101.2 -- Die crack Rev at top of "TES", eventually extends above "A" and to edge above "T"
101.3 -- Die crack Obv from the base of the date to the left, joing stars 1 through 6 and to the forecurl.

Additional Obverse die cracks on later die states:
-- from star 3 to bust
-- from edge to curl just right of date
-- from edge through "1" and into drapery
-- joining all stars on the right

FYI, the 1808/7 is a common (R1) bust half variety that's listed in the Red Book.

Real, and yes, it is the 8/7 overdate.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
