GTG: 1902-S Half Eagle

This is an interesting piece in a problem-free CACG holder. Take a guess and/or comment. I'll reveal the grade on Saturday. Thank you.

Great looking coin with neat toning. MS64 give or take a couple of points.

Put me in the “MS64 take a couple of points away” camp. It looks like an MS62 to me.

My initial thought was 63
I think the toning is covering up a lot of hairlines, and I also see some minor rim marks. At most, MS-63.
I'm in the 62 camp as the neck has a couple of "saw marks" and the field in front of chin/neck with a couple of "rub-dubs". Reverse with a col of hits in the toning, etc.
Love those S minted coins! I often wonder what it was like in Frisco in those days & suspect much of California still had flavor of the Old West. Or the Barbary Coast section of said town? Yikes.
Well, just Love coins, period.
I think 62 because it's in a CAC holder.

63, but possibly 58.
They posted this coin on their Instagram earlier this week so I won't guess. Great looking coin though.

I don’t know and don’t care what it grades. I love it. Would look perfect in my toned gold collection! Beautiful
MS62 sounds right but I’ll say MS61+ to be different.

62 - dark areas drag it down. Or is this a trick thread and it’s really a 61 or 58? I believe as time goes on it may get darker. Left obv field some rough sledding too. You know a lot of people like toners bc it covers up hairlines? This piece a good example. Look how the darkish tarnish near the date helps cover up some hairlines. Then reverse a big gouge near the S with the tarnish helping subdue.
58, cheek/nose/eyebrow are rubby. If not for the rub I would still be no higher than a 61, the fields are pretty rough.

We have a winner. REALGATOR also said possibly 58 and the 58s have it. Really cool toning on this piece and conservatively graded at CACG as an AU58.

A hard grade for me to understand. If the coin is not uncirculated, then all the noise would make me think 55.
Before the reveal, I was going to guess 62. I thought it looked uncirculated but too banged up for anything higher than 62.

I think I saw this on your IG the other day. Totally looks like low MS. Surprised they kept it down despite the hits. Might be that those S coins are always so shiny! But this seems to have MS luster.

Certainly looks like a slider that would often land in a 62/63 holder. CACG is always conservative.

Late, my guess would have been 62, what a cool looking 58!
Any wear on that coin appears to be microscopic and there's a good chance that it would have received a higher MS grade from PCGS or NGC.

The photos deemphasized a lot of issues on this coin. That made it harder to grade.
CACG is often conservative but far from “always” so.

Good point. I should have said usually.
