Thursday at Long Beach

It was with a heavy heart that I attended what is supposed to be the last Long Beach Coin Show on Thursday.
I want to thank Deplorable Dan for finding me a Flowing Hair Dollar that I have been trying to find for eight solid years. I never actually saw the coin in hand but Dan showed it to someone I trust who viewed the coin, gave it a thumbs up, I authorized the purchase, and picked it up on Thursday. He can post an image of the coin; I don't have one. I prefer buying coins this way, as often, people pay a premium at auction for bragging rights of winning a coin, and all I care about is the coin itself.
I showed the coin to someone who knows quite about this series, and he agreed that it was a very nice collector coin for the grade. I wanted to visit with John Danreuther, but it was like Jesus and the Multitudes at this table, so I passed. I visited with Tom Reynolds, with whom I have an Omaha connection, is one of the smartest people in the room when comes to Large and Half Cents, and whom I have known forever. Made my annual visit to a good friend I know at Heritage.
Long lines at PCGS submission table. Don Rinkor had a nice run of attractive Peace Dollars, which are hard to find nice. Saw about ten MS 65 PCGS Capped Bust Halves in PC holders. Most of them looked nice for the grade, David Hall Rare Coins had an 1824 that was off the charts beautiful. I don't collect gold, have my type Morgan Dollar and Walker, so where there were plenty of Uncs. of these types of coins, I did not look at them.
Charmy was the only IHC person in attendance that I noticed.
I always go by East-West coin, where they have a huge amount of coins in 2 by 2s, all for $3. In the past, I saw a 1937 Merc that looked MS 63, a number of 40% Silver Half Dollars, and my favorite coin this time was a 1916 P Barber Dime in what looked like FR 02.
I didn't see the guy who had small baskets of Coronet and Braided Head Large Cents; one basket had coins costing $15, another $20, a third costing $25. All coins in them were relatively common dates that would grade as high as VF and they are great album fillers.
Show was quiet. While the usual suspects had tables, many out of town dealers (probably knew it was the last Long Beach Show and) weren't there. If they want to repackage the show somewhere else in Southern California, they can get by with half of the space they had at Long Beach. I'd keep the show more coin and currency focused. The jewelry, guns, swords and other non-coin / currency related items could go elsewhere. It would also be nice to have an outfit selling coin related supplies (magnifying glasses, air-tites, etc). on site, as they did in the past.
Did not see any other collectors I knew there, which was a first in all of the Long Beach Shows I attended in the past. The West Coast needs a big show. Perhaps they can do one in Orange County, by LAX or somewhere in the Inland Empire.

This was not an easy one to let go of, but it makes it easier when you know it will be close by in good hands. It's originality can't even be drawn into question, in fact I think it would have easily made 55 if it wasn't quite as original. Sharply struck with exceptional detail for the grade, extra crusty with no shortage of character. I think 53-55 is the sweet spot, as the jump to 58 is substantial. While the thick skin might hold back some underlying luster, I think it's redeeming qualities make it quite a memorable piece.
Congrats @Elcontador, I'm happy to see this one land in the right collection.

Beautiful dollar from Dan. Congratulations.

53 seems harsh and your explanation as to skin holding back luster is likely spot on. Die flow lines are critical in evaluating a coin such as this because it goes towards how original skin should have a greater influence on the grade outcome. There is more to luster than just reflectivity…what creates that reflectivity can be overlooked. And in this instance, that seems to be the case. And as a result, unfortunate things often happen to a coin in an effort to enhance reflectivity in an effort to obtain a higher grade. Such an effort with this coin would be catastrophic…
Edited to add…. Excellent purchase and a wonderful coin. Congrats

@Elcontador, so much detail left on that dollar. That coin sounds like it was waiting for you! Congrats.
I recall seeing this coin in Dan’s inventory on the website and thinking “man that has some skin”
Congrats!

Maybe the 1795 is technically a 53 but in the universe of stripped-down coins from the 1790s, this coin stands out. Would certainly be worth more than some higher graded examples.
Thanks for the report!

I am glad the coin found a home and a dealer who appreciate its originality. I suspect the urge to “conserve” the coin for a higher number would be tough to resist for many other dealers.
Must be so satisfying to land that right coin after such a long search! Bravo!
I enjoyed reading your report. Thanks.

Good report! I’ll add a few observations of my own.
I attended the show on Wednesday (set up day), Thursday & Friday. In this location, I believe it was the final show. Every dealer I talked to thought as much & some are of the mind it will move to a smaller location in the future. That will be next year at the earliest.
As it was the “last” show, there were unsold tables. Even so, every dealer I had interaction with was having a good show. I noted, too, a number of “YN” dealers, a few with their first table at any coin show. Gratifying to see these “new” faces with their enthusiasm (& good knowledge & nice material).
Personally, I’m OK with the sports cards, jewelry, stamps & other memorabilia, as these areas offer something of interest to those with a lesser interest in coins (think spouses & kids).
Final note to the OP: Eagle Eye Rare Coins & Angel Dee’s also had tables in addition to The Penny Lady. There was some excellent IHC/FE/patterns in that group.
I’ve always enjoyed this show. It certainly has transitioned over the years & personally, it’s sad to see it go. Hopefully, it will revive in another location next year.

Thanks for the report, Jeff - that was an interesting read. Having attended dozens of shows there over 30+ years, I’m sure if I’d been at that one, it would have been a very emotional experience for me.
Congratulations on your great pickup. You exhibited admirable patience and it appears to have paid off with a true prize to cherish.

Is the trueview accurate on that dollar? I can’t stop thinking it has black mold on the surfaces creating that black splotchy tone.
I was looking for one of these for eight years. This is only the second one that I have seen in this time period that looked problem free and acceptable for the grade. I let the first one get away and was determined not to let that happen again.

Yes. You can also look up the coin on the Coinfacts sights and it is one of the plate coins for the date and type if you click on the photograde link.

Congratulations on the Flowing Hair! Absolute dream coin. I visited Dan's table at FUN and he was kind enough to let me hold this amazing piece.
Dan showed the coin to my contact at FUN, and that's how we did the deal. I agree with Dan in that if the coin was not as dark, it would be in a 55 holder. I'm fine with it the way it is. Original skin in important to me.

Glad you found a coin that met your requirements - congrats!
Tim, it took me eight years to find that coin. I need maybe three others to complete my type set. it took eight years to find my Heraldic Eagle Dollar. Hopefully, I'll live long enough to see it done.
