After birddogging this type for a few years, I finally bought one that spoke to me.

From Potosi to London, then points unknown for a century or so, to the Rutherford collection, then Stack’s - and no extra charge for the test cut!

Congrats… I found the Potosi and Mo 8R counters when I was not looking for them. Pleasing coins seem to surface when one least expects it… that seems to be a re-occurring pattern for me. Sorta makes the hunt more enjoyable.

I have one “half as nice”.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

Yes, that is the one I remember seeing at the Tower. Very near the Petition Crown on display.

Love the thread title. Great clickbait. Counterstrikes are fascinating.

Nice collection you’ve got there! I like them all - that 1794 Mexico 8R is super sharp!

Just wondering - are there other George III c/s US dollars out there, not in museums?

There are. I believe that Davison’s Limited sold one years ago, but I have not learned how to navigate their past sale archives.

According the British silver coin variety guide, there are counterpunches on lower denominations, but their authenticity is in doubt. I am not going after them.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Thanks- I did post these within the past 2-3 years after our host graded them. I like the Mo the best but apparently the Potosi has lower surviving population based on what has been graded.

I can never find these straight graded on ebay. Am I gonna have to sign up to auction sites to get one? Do they show up for sale often?

In my experience I see nicer ones generally show up at auction houses but I have also seen them straight graded on Ebay in the past. Someone got a good deal on an AU50 counterstamped four reales just a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah, I passed on it, coulda slapped myself. I was like “I really want a colonial piece instead of a Spain piece.” An hour later, when I realized I was being an idiot, it was gone.

I'm BACK!!! Used to be Billet7 on the old forum.

I casually bid on it and was surprised when it sold at Great Collections for like $470 a week prior, it was still a good deal on Ebay!
