1915-D Buffalo - What do you grade it?

I've seen many weakly struck 15-D's. I'm torn on the grade for this one! Full split tail and original luster have thrown me further off on assigning a grade. What would you grade it? A recent Flea market pick up that is destined for my albums. Fire away! New images added!

Something looks off. I’m not sure it is real. Liberty is to strong, Five Cents is to fat plus a few other things. Hopefully the experts will chime in.

New pictures make it look real. AU

There are better struck 15-D nickels like this one out there. Regardless of that, your nickel has a rim cud at 4:00 on the reverse. The reverse is not fully struck, with the head and rump of Black Diamond weak.

The obverse is average with a nicely struck knot on Iron Tail. The top feather is weakly struck with only about 40% of detail.

It's still a decent specimen and will probably grade high 63 to a low 64.

    I'll say 64.

MS-64. Those marks you see were on the planchet and were not flattened when the coin was struck.

The coin looks approximately MS63 (shot MS64) to me.

I think this coin has better luster than photos show. I see it as a 64.

:D AU cleaned at best, obvious wear.

Put it in 2x2 for junk box. Pricing?

Obvious only to those who can’t distinguish strike from wear.

The signs of the first beginnings of wear do not seem to be there (on the Buff's butt). I'd say MS63 is a good guess.

    AU-58 (rub) - commercial MS-64.

  • From the Reverse picture, I don't see any rub or flatness on the hip bump so I would call it a MS64.
Definately a weak strike as the Obverse and Reverse centers of the coin show signs of the original planchet defects that
    didn't strike out.

Thanks! I love this place. My grade of AU-58 was wrong. I see the planchet marks.

You're gonna have to tell me (teach me) how you can see PVC from that photo
Looks to me like a weak strike MS63

  • My guess is MS63.

Agreed! My first pics were horrible. I can see how you could draw that conclusion. It has no pvc and has not been cleaned.

I kinda wished you left the first photo up, so we could see what a difference a photo can make on a decision to purchase, or not. Also, the right side of the reverse looks a bit like a rusted die. I do not believe that would alter my grading decision, however.

Looks 63 but that MM looks off for a 15-D, maybe just the photos.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Typical slightly mushy strike. I say either 63 straight grade or Unc Details ED depending on whether the area below and between the TE in UNITED is PVC residue or just digital artifacts in the image.
