Which silver Roosie do you like better?

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,437 ✭✭✭✭✭

You can always look them up, I'm not hiding the cert#s, but, before you do look them up, as they aren't the same grade, which one do you like better?

Two are MS66+FB and the other 2 are MS67FB, so, gradewise, not much difference. The years are different though, and the toning is different.

Which one do you prefer?

I will assume that they are all as approximately equivalent to lifelike as possible. The 1952 and 1953 appear to have chrome-like surfaces underneath the toning and I don't always find this that attractive on Roosevelt dimes. Alternatively, the 1958-D has the classic "I'm from a 1958-D US mint set!" toning pattern while I think the 1964 is a bit distracting given its tiger stripes.

Overall, with the assumption made as previous, I would take the 1958-D and call it a day.

I like the 58-D best. 2 is ok. I like the reverse of 4 but I would pass on the coin because of the obverse. The toning on 1 is ok but it has some spots and a hit near the mouth that distract. Also, the bands look extremely weak for an FB.

    So, 3, 2, 1, 4 overall.
And yes, it pains me to go against my handle.

For small silver, I prefer rim obverse toning to frame the subject.

The correct answer is to buy them all.

I will revise my 4am post and bump #2 into my #1 position

1958-D As mentioned, it's a classic toned Roosie.

The 52 and 53 appear to be end-of-roll coins. I could be wrong, so say's my wife.

I don't care for the first one at all. It's poorly struck on the reverse. The toning on the fourth one is streaky and ugly IMO.

I like the 52, then the 53, then 64, then 58. The 52 has a cool die crack on the reverse as well.

The second one (1953) stood out to me in terms of color.
I then looked it up and based on price guide, would not want to pay for the grade and color combo premium (I'd be happy enough with 1 or 3 at a fraction of the price; alternatively I would keep looking for an example that has my desired level of eye appeal at a grade level that is less expensive).

I also like the toning on #1 the best. If I were to assemble a collection of Roosevelt dimes, coins with that type of toning are what I would seek. I don’t think there would be much of a challenge to complete a set in white.

Hey, since at one point I was 1to 17 on @pocketcoins peace dollar challenge selecting coin #2, I'm feeling pretty good about myself. Therefore I don't mind saying I'm liking coin #4, especially the reverse, but the dark spots around the eyebrow take me back to coin #1.
