On the TV news they were saying that the fire season in 75 days longer than in the 1970's. In the 1970's I believe they were doing forest management. People keep breaking / changing things and then say oh my gosh climate change and everything else instead of trying to fix. We have just so many incompetent people that get paid for things they know nothing and think they know everything. I swear I think many elementary kids have more sense than some people leading our country.

To everyone that isn't a part of the MAGA movement, guys I just want you to know that I'm sorry you had to read all of this this past few months, it's been building up for some time. I made a comment a while back on a social media network, an innocent enough comment about politics and the next thing I know, some Trump supporters are threatening me and my family, threatening our lives. You know I can be a bit of a hothead anyway, so this really set me off about MAGA and I'm sorry to everyone that had to witness my explosions. I never wanted to get involved in politics, hell, I had never voted in my entire life prior to this past election. But I have come to detest these people and this whole MAGA movement, the more I dug into it, the uglier it got. I honestly don't understand how anyone can be a part of it. Take care everyone, I'll miss this place.

Don't believe everything you read. Read and watch all and compare then use common sense. The mainstream media has been lying and it has been proven . They keep saying they have proof but there NEVER BEEN ANY PROOF.

Let's get back to the topic of the fire.

Man oh man. I was very busy this weekend and was not really online to check the message board. did this thing ever jump right off the rails.

Look, no one likes to talk politics more than me, but this is just not the place. I would really hate to see any of our frequent posters get the hammer over this. just ignore DD/Neanderthal. its not worth it to respond.

Per DD. I used to really enjoy his frequent posts/jokes/memes etc. I LOVED all the Aaron Rodgers memes/talk. I dont know what has happened to him. He is a different person now. It is too bad, but he needs to go. I just hope he doesnt take any of us down with him.

This thread should really be about this terrible fire and keeping a line of communication open so we can make sure our fellow forumites/friends are safe and sound. My thoughts are with all of you guys in harms way. Stay vigilant and stay safe!!

Private concerns are hiring private firemen from Arizona. Saved one strip mall already while all homes across street were ruined.
And rental price gouging has begun.

Do not forget the looting that has taken place and will take place (likely motivated by a mindset of Thar's Bling In Them Thar Hills!!!!!; or maybe a mindset of Mo Money, Mo Money,....................... Mo Money!!!!!)

Wind picking up, heavy Tue. Wed.. They need to get control of this fire before we lose we lose more people and property.

  • craig44craig44 Posts: 11,461 ✭✭✭✭✭

My goodness, this wind is just terrible. I dont see how the FF will be able to get this under control with that stupid wind. I am so sorry for all those out in the line of this fire.

As an outsider to California, I wonder why they have not cut/bulldozed fire barriers? it seems like if they cut 100 yards of the trees/brush that line residential areas then bulldozed berms up against, it could prevent such fires? It wouldnt look pretty, but probably would be effective. Worlds better than losing all the lives/property.

The fires are tragic and devastating.

The ever present looting following such fires is disgusting.

There are published mug shot photos of persons arrested for looting in fire ravaged LA. If they are charged and found guilty send them to prison and throw away the key.

I bet it must be like Whack A Mole to the firefighters. Put a fire out and one or two pop up.

LA FD says they don't have the resources and $$. City has had made major cuts to LA FD and mismanaged $$. Peoples lives were and are at risk. We get so upset when our teams won't spend $$ to better our favorite sporting teams. This is LA $$$$$ can you imagine if this happened in your local city or town. We would be asking and demanding for all responsible to be fired on the spot.

I just read yesterday that the fire is only 18% contained.

LAFD is understaffed and underfunded. That being said, no amount of human intervention, money or tactics could have saved the victims once these multiple major fires got to a critical stage. Assigning blame will come soon enough, but another tragedy could be right around the corner. We won't rest easy knowing this. We've been through some rather incredible weather extremes lately. No reason to think it will change any time soon. In the meantime, we still regularly hear the sirens from the fire crews on their way to areas of concern, but the very worst of the warnings seem to be done for now.

All is fair in love and war and third party grading.

I'm not a fan of the LAFD budget being politicized. I'm hopeful someone will actually do enough research to realize the budget actually increased pretty dramatically.

If it increased why is it being stated different. Does it mean that they were much more incompetent. Now there is major talk how so many firetrucks are out of commission and there were lots of firemen but no firetrucks.
I heard a lot of the money was diverted for other things that we can not talk about per rules on this forum.

In public service you tend to find bureaucracy and lack of accountability. I don't know enough details to know what the actual problem is there. The LAFD prioritized salaries and benefits. There were some $23MM in budget cuts - though the number you hear is $17.4MM. When these cuts were proposed, the negotiations with the union were ongoing, so funding for certain things was placed into a separate fund - this was $76MM. Right there you have a budget increase, but this number is strategically omitted from discussions which want to paint this as a budget issue. There was also an additional $54MM allocated for new fire trucks and equipment repair. The LAFD has not used these funds yet - oops.

What were the cuts and did they cause the problem? It's unlikely. The cuts removed, from the budget, 76 unfilled positions and they reduced funds dedicated to overtime and training by $7MM-$8MM - note: this money was merely moved, and still remains under the discretion of the LAFD.

Further, the union negotiations have completed and that ended up around $203MM, which is also an increase YoY. But they did put about $1.2M into some DEI positions, and while that might be wasteful, or not, or whatever, it's not what has caused this issue.

As far as politics is concerned I don't really care and I have no use for politicians.

Can we end this thread? We all see the news, the ugliness of it all. I don't think ongoing updates by the LAFD Chief or anyone else associated with this nightmare is beneficial, nor posting here about who said what as though it was breaking news.

While the OP was well intended, like many post, it tends to go off the rails and morph into various tangents that add little if anything to the topic. I really don't care who did what, that is to be sorted out by the residents of California, not an ongoing diatribe about the Union, who did what with what money, nor how many overseas trips the mayor took or why the firetrucks were on weren't where they should have been. This horror is a daily National news event, posting updates is uselss and counterproductive...and would eventually lead to more acrimony.

What's done is done, those effected will have a mountain of misery to deal with. Let's just be thankful for what we have and pray for those so devasted by these fires.

It's possible to both "hope for the best for affected people" and "politely discuss the issues at hand". Rather - it should be.

I understand what you are saying. There are many people on here and we all have many different viewpoints . I there is something I do not like most times I just avoid it. Many times I read it but don't comment . We all have the right to respond as long as we stay in the guidelines of C.U. I think the biggest thing is not to disrespect the people affected by the disaster or the people on this site. I

I would not have responded to DD except that he just kept going on and on and on. Every time saying that he would not say any more and every time he got worse and worse spewing his hate.

Yup, DD definitely went off the deep end. He used to put up some really good stuff, but then something happened to him. I happen to know through others I've had contact with via PM, that some posters were trying to bring him back from the brink, but nothing worked, so we just gave up and he fried his own egg.

I'm not criticising your post about him...its just the droning on of posters seeming to think they're adding some new found news about this horrific event in CA. Nor am I challenging anyone's right to respond. Its just that there isn't anything substantial to add, we hear about if every day in the news so what's the point?

The "news" can be rather selective about what they show to their audience. I will vouch for the fact that an everyday bombardment of information can become a grind. I live in the area close to where the worst of it happened. Got lucky, I guess. But, some other members of this community were allowed back home only yesterday after waiting almost a week. It's been weird living here. People are like zombies and kinda go through the motions, as if another disaster is about to happen.

Just sayin'. It's bigger than news. We have a long way to go before normalcy returns. I've spent more time than usual lately just staring at cards. That's getting boring, too. There's not much else to do right now besides staying supportive of others.

Here’s a pretty unbiased scientific review of the issue and the danger.

    https://youtu.be/qDZ2fR8QdTg?si=SQJZTYhSqNn0VocH

I get irritated when I see wasted effort focused on blame regardless the motivation for that blame. But while I can’t fault people focused on blame as a result of grief, I certainly do when people are focused on blame for political or economic advantage.

Regardless anyone’s belief on whether there is a problem and who or what is to blame I think we can objectively accept that there are some issues we could work to at least mitigate.

I don’t get it. DD comes up with another user name, fools around with his icon pic until apparently he gets it just right with a flying witch, then unleashes his vitriol on us again.
Why is an icon pic necessary? It’s like Thelma and Louise making sure the car insurance is paid up before driving off the cliff. Is DD just sitting there going, “Okay I made the post, now I just sit back and wait for the compliments to come in for my icon pic.”
I guess when you’ve gone loco you still want to make sure you get the small things right.
DD good choice with the flying witch!

In other news, Will Smith’s son purchased a castle. Fortunately it was live in ready so he was able to move in immediately. Guest space is a little tight. Good for the young man he looks totally enthused about his new residence. 👍

He changed his icon pic 14 times just to go up in flames after 1 post. The thought process just doesn’t make sense. Why doesn’t he just use the user name… iusedtobesane1 then when that gets banned go 2,3 etc. no icon pic necessary. He’s just putting way too much thought into it for no reason. Simplifying is usually the best way to go.
