January 2025 - New Year, New Pickup Thread

Kicking off 2025 is an item that is tough to find, especially if you are going to be condition sensitive. These are flimsy, thin and incredibly susceptible to wear. They seemingly weren’t that popular as long term collectors items and were viewed more as their intended use, a pin up or wall poster, at least as an American release and it seems that the passion for these was even less so with its release to our northern nation of neighbors. Their version were released a year after their American counterparts and the population of American to Canadian is 487 to 33 for Mickey Mantle.

This will be sent in for grading very soon and it compares favorably to the single highest graded example especially if you factor in the famed “rough cuts” of the time period.

That is a great Mantle pinup! I can attest that they are extremely condition sensitive as I have a complete (Topps) set. Very hard not to have pinholes in the center as they are made out of newspaper type paper and were folded two ways to fit into packs.
I was not aware the OPC version came out a year later than Topps.

Going to try to get the 1952 catcher run. Here are my first 2, I’m a nerd with OCD so I go for all the variations . Thank goodness these red & black backs aren’t in the high series!!

Cool project. Show us the set when you complete!

Purchased from BBCE...two (2) fish eyes in the dugout background from a possible 10. Bold colors, centered 52/48 side-to-side and 50/50 top-to-bottom, nice registration and corners. Two (2) white dots in the dugout background are the scanner (dust or whatever), not on the card.

Beautiful card. Do you mind me asking what you paid?

Heck of a rivalry. They played against each other 42 times, including 3 NBA Finals. Kareem won 21 times and Dr. J won 21 times.

Does that incude their one-on-one game they played shortly after they retired?

Have decided to go down a non-sports rabbit hole recently. Hard for me to leave anything unopened so these will all be opened. Will share the nicer stuff.

I saw a video of the one-on-one game a while back. Dr. J couldn't really handle Kareem, who was just to big for the Doc and scored at will.

The best of the break. Think we may have some Phoebe Cates Drew Barrymore rookies in this batch.

I had one of these out for autograph when Rickey passed. Just received them back last week. I’ll have to keep looking for a little better example.

    That's beautiful!

I gotta ask because Journal and Sentinel merged in 95. Which one was it? And which was your favorite back then? Must have been at Mecca in 1980.
