January 2025 - New Year, New Pickup Thread
Kicking off 2025 is an item that is tough to find, especially if you are going to be condition sensitive. These are flimsy, thin and incredibly susceptible to wear. They seemingly weren’t that popular as long term collectors items and were viewed more as their intended use, a pin up or wall poster, at least as an American release and it seems that the passion for these was even less so with its release to our northern nation of neighbors. Their version were released a year after their American counterparts and the population of American to Canadian is 487 to 33 for Mickey Mantle.
This will be sent in for grading very soon and it compares favorably to the single highest graded example especially if you factor in the famed “rough cuts” of the time period.

Upgrade for 58 set and an auto for my 61 set.
Purchased from BBCE...two (2) fish eyes in the dugout background from a possible 10. Bold colors, centered 52/48 side-to-side and 50/50 top-to-bottom, nice registration and corners. Two (2) white dots in the dugout background are the scanner (dust or whatever), not on the card.
That is a great Mantle pinup! I can attest that they are extremely condition sensitive as I have a complete (Topps) set. Very hard not to have pinholes in the center as they are made out of newspaper type paper and were folded two ways to fit into packs.
I was not aware the OPC version came out a year later than Topps.
Going to try to get the 1952 catcher run. Here are my first 2, I’m a nerd with OCD so I go for all the variations . Thank goodness these red & black backs aren’t in the high series!!
Cool project. Show us the set when you complete!
These came in earlier in the week.

Love the centering on the Schmidt.
I used some Christmas money to pick this one up.

This had been a fairly tough 9 in the past, but a bunch of nice ones seem to have been submitted recently, and I found one I liked.
I've been collecting coin ops since 1994 and it started with this 50s exhibit card vending machine.
Here's my latest.
Baker Novelty Co., c1935, Chicago, IL. Kicker and Catcher
It's 17.5" tall.
The mechanism of action - wheel on right activates the "kick" and the wheel on the left controls the "catcher":
when you catch a ball, you move it to the far left when it triggers a score and "returns" the ball to the kicker for use again. This, IMO, is one "kickass" game!
Beautiful card. Do you mind me asking what you paid?
1st in pic. 130point is your friend
GREAT pickp. The OPC pin-ups are tough and SCARCE. I haven't picked up mantle yet but have Aaron and Mays.
Groo is on top of it! Now we know...$2750.
Thank you.
Ticket pick up. This was the first ever Kareem Abdul Jabbar vs Julius Erving game. Heck of a rivalry. They played against each other 42 times, including 3 NBA Finals. Kareem won 21 times and Dr. J won 21 times.
Terry Bradshaw was AMAZING!!

I was looking for cards for a sub and found this in my stars stack from a box I busted. I bought a couple of the Skybox Metal Universe boxes because they were cheap at a local store. I didn't realize the card was a rare variant because frankly the cards all look alike. I noticed the serial number on the back. Even the blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.
Have decided to go down a non-sports rabbit hole recently. Hard for me to leave anything unopened so these will all be opened. Will share the nicer stuff.
Does that incude their one-on-one game they played shortly after they retired?
Can’t wait!!!!!!
Live long, and prosper.
This is so cool!
The best of the break. Think we may have some Phoebe Cates Drew Barrymore rookies in this batch.
E
three more 83 topps.
This card is tough, they all seem to have tilt, even the 9s, of which there are only 110. I have a stack of these but can’t find one I love, this one is pretty good for this card (but has issues, print being #1):
LOL no. Though maybe it took place to end the tie?
Terry Bradshaw was AMAZING!!

I saw a video of the one-on-one game a while back. Dr. J couldn't really handle Kareem, who was just to big for the Doc and scored at will.
Non-Sport Treasures!!!!
Live long, and prosper.
I just picked this up. The highest graded example for any card in the set.
Very low grade but I've always loved this set and decided this year to build a set of the "Topps" cards from it.
Low grade but I liked it for my catcher set.
Kicking off 2025 with a tougher brown back Reggie Jackson to go with my black back Jackson.
Matt
That Reggie is so cool.
Too bad Topps did not use that Reggie image...
Yzerman had an interesting career. Was considered a bit of a playoff choker early on, but became recognized as one of the best big game players ever, top 20 guy all time.
More low grade 77 Venezuelans
First arrival of the new year.
I had one of these out for autograph when Rickey passed. Just received them back last week. I’ll have to keep looking for a little better example.
Trout RCs keep getting cheaper. Starting to pick his cards up for autos.
This Palmer is out for autograph along with a sweet 71. Still can’t find the stain.
I am going to get this signed even though I don’t see how this card gets better than a PSA 7. Surface issues!
Picked this 10/10 up as a placeholder for for 500 HR club set. While I wait for a chance to get a 569HR inscription on my own.
Likely upgrade for my HOF RC auto set and my 71 topps HOF auto set. Solid 8.
Yet another shot at a McGriff 10/10. Should have a chance to get this one signed here shortly.
Decided to dip my toes into some signed HOF photos recently. Completely outside of my normal collecting habits, but really liked the bold autos on these ones.
Main collecting focus is Patrick Roy playing days 85/86-02/03, expect 1/1, National/All-Star stamped cards.PC Completion: 2,548/2,952; 86.31% My Patrick Roy PC Website:https://proy33collector.weebly.com
That's beautiful!
This one arrived yesterday.
Added to my Cubs PC. Fun fact: Won the triple crown in 1912.
Been buying more tickets than cards lately. Trying to acquire notable events in Wisconsin. Grabbed this one the other day. Black Sabbath played at the Milwaukee Arena in October, 1980. After a fan hit bassist Geezer Butler in the head with a bottle before the set's third song, Sabbath members left the stage; a riot ensued shortly after. I added a few pictures from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
I gotta ask because Journal and Sentinel merged in 95. Which one was it? And which was your favorite back then? Must have been at Mecca in 1980.
Nice Bobby Baseball day for me…
^^Great figurine!^^
